I am 65 years old. In first through 8th grade I went to school at St. Lucy's in the Bronx. Back then in May my school would have such a beautiful May Crowning in the beautiful grotto that Church had. I so miss it. I am writing Mother Mary a letter. Our Church is putting up a Mother Mary statchue, our pastor is going to put then under the statchu. What a wonderful thing to do

My earthly mother Sara raised me to pray the Rosery nightly. She also nudged me to pray and place a crown of flowers on our statue of Mary nightly in May. I have a prayer list of names who have asked me to pray for them or a loved one. I have moved it to my phone as it is lighted and easier on my 76 year old eyes. Once on my list....the name remains. I feel comfort doing this little act. Once someone dies I place a "D" after their name. I BELIEVE in the POWER of PRAYER!

I remember this so well and was just speaking of May 1st the other day and recall the fresh garden and yard flowers we made bouquets and had a procession at Mass that morning and all the children bought the bouquets up and laid them on the Alter. We also had a May Pole Dance with colorful pastel colors and as we danced around the May Pole it wrapped the bright pastel ribbons all around the May Pole and for sure then Spring was upon us! Thank you for this...........a great memory! We also made May baskets of flowers and candy and put them on the neighbor's porch, rang the bell, and then ran off so as to be sure they didn't see who left them a loving treat! Those were the days!

I'm very much a post-conciliar Catholic, born at the tail-end of the '60s, AND I love May crownings. My parish has a May crowning, fittingly, every Mother's Day, and the weather usually cooperates! We sing everything from the old favorites to "Gentle woman, quiet light." I cherish the Marian piety of the last three popes, whom I've come to regard as "the Holy Spirit's hat trick" (if you'll pardon the hockey vernacular)! And Mr McDermott's rendition is awesome. And if a traditionalist and a progressive can both love this hymn, let's rejoice over that! Our Lady, consolatrix of the afflicted, refuge of sinners, Queen of Peace, pray for us!
@dylan6186 жыл бұрын
Dear Sir or Madam, I shall clarify. I did not refer to myself as a "progressive Catholic," rather as a post-conciliar Catholic. The term is generational, not ideological; it tells you the historical moment into which I was born. When I used the adjective "progressive," I was referring to the other person with whom you had (I'll be decorous) a somewhat less than cheerful exchange. If you're a Lefebvrite, I haven't the slightest bit of interest in the schismatic rancidities that you're peddling. Ubi Petrus, ibi Christus. True 60 years ago, true now. As for "changing the Church," I'm not sure what gave you the indication that I was trying to do that. Maybe functional literacy is to blame. I was trying to make peace between you and the other commenter, who made some unfortunate generalizations about traditionalists, generalizations which you are doing your level best to verify. I accept your closing benediction in the spirit wherein you intended it.

I joined the Vietnamese parish because a) the priest would baptize my grandchildren though I was broke and 2) the MUSIC is so joyful and sweet!!! You are so right, justess! People who have been through hard days can't take much of that gloomy religion. I love the incarnation and original sacramental faith that celibrates Grace without self help 'spirituality'. A Mass where a tired, uninspired soul can go and be lifted up by the living Spirit of Jesus Christ present freely is the Christianity beloved all over the 3rd world and the poor.
