This brings me back to primary school at the Christian Brothers as every May we stood in class before our altar to Mary and sang this hymn with great joy and devotion. An era that is now gone.
@terryashton35413 жыл бұрын
Good one Gerry, I agree about the era being gone, sadly at today's masses a lot of the `old` hymns are never recited and that's sad because a large portion of today's congregations are made up of older folks like myself who would dearly love to hear some of the older hymns and like you this beautiful hymn also takes me back to the 50s at my old Catholic church in Manchester.
@terryashton35412 жыл бұрын
Isn't it funny though regards our comments, from what I read here most of the people would be around my age and I am in my middle 70s, it's a shame in a way that the Roman Catholic church doesn't seem to pay as much homage to Our Lady now as it did in my time back in the 1950s, another sad thing also today is the lack of hymn sung in Latin, sometimes change is not always not for the good.

Yeh I can remember the same at my old Catholic school and church back in Manchester in the 1950s, sadly these beautiful hymns are not sung as often today, now I live in Australia and have not heard this hymn in years, I think the people who organise what hymns are sung at mass must be mostly of the younger generation because most of the hymns I don't know, don't forget you people out there most of the congregation at Catholic masses are senior citizens and it would be nice to include some of the old hymns now and again.

Same here-child of the 50s and learned this beautiful hymn in primary school. It’s not an Irish hymn as such, but I think the Irish adopted it and maybe Irish nuns brought it to Scotland, where I live, and taught it in schools here. My mother also learned it from her teachers in Catholic school during the twenties and thirties. The words vary a bit but I’m not sure which verses were the original, as composed by an American lady in the 19th century called Mary E Walsh. Try listening to Nan Merriman’s version. She was an American opera singer in the 1950s and sings it beautifully. It’s on KZbin. Sydney McEwan of course has another famous version. Unfortunately today’s younger Catholics have little knowledge of these beautiful Marian hymns.

@@terryashton3541 Maybe it was just here in Scotland but there was a hymn we used to sing in school near the end of term, just before the summer break. We loved singing it because we knew the hols were approaching! It was called The Holiday Hymn. It began “Mother of all that is pure and glad, all that is bright and blest, as we have taken our toil to Thee, so we will take our rest”. The end was in Latin-“O causa nostrae laetitae”. Later on in my career as a primary school teacher I made sure to teach it as well!

Yeh I can remember also as a child we would sing this beautiful hymn regularly and May was a special month for our Holy Mother and for us and that was back in the 1950s, I think a lot of homage to our Holy Mother changed after Vatican 11 along with all our Latin hymns we used to sing and yet all these years later 2021 I can still recite most of my childhood hymns, it just shows what an impact they had on me and I will be deeply indebted for that and my Catholic faith.

God has no mother! The Son of God had a worldly mother, and the Son at ALL times acknowledged the seniority, love, and absolute respect for his Almighty Father. "The father is greater than I". Joh 14:28, It is his almighty Father that will eventually put all enemies under his feet, the last enemy being death, which is not till the end of Jesus 1000 year reign, when Satan is released from the Abyss for a short while, before he is also destroyed like death.
