Firstly, in a Liberal society (liberal in the enlightenment values sense) no religion (or any ideology/belief system for that matter) should be exempt from criticism or satire. However, in 2024 making fun of Christianity in the Western world seems a very soft target. From the days of John Lennon declaring the Beatles to be ‘bigger than Jesus’, though the early heavy metal bands, to the 2010s Soundclap rap era of flirting with demonic imagery, even to Doja Cat’s ‘Paint The Town Red’ video, it’s pretty played out to the point of being cringe and the opposite of shocking these days. If you really want to be edgy, mock Islam. See how that goes. Just ask Salman Rushdie.

I'm a Christian and I can't image mustering up the energy to care. Why should it matter to me if the musicians I listen to have the same views as I do? I really don't care. first off, I am a huge LP fan and noticed your profile pic. Secondly, as a Christian i need to tell you (and don't take this as judgement) but if you're really a Christian, it's wise to look into spiritual warfare and please don't overlook this. It will give you some clarity on what music you should and shouldn't listen to. I recommend this in the most brotherly, friendly and loving way possible. please look into it. You might then will rethink who you let into your ear gates and eye gates. Not all bands are bad, like LP don't really talk about demonic crap or blaspheme God, plus some of those members are religious themselves. It's not about genre either, as you know there's all forms of Christian genres even. But to listen to a band like this, is very contradicting to what God calls you to take part in. You should really be offended if you a Christian right now about what this band said. To say you have no energy to care is really ignorance and hypocritical and you need to read your bible.
@ggr97457 ай бұрын
@AceWav I get that you're trying to be helpful but I think you and I will never agree on this. I think that as a Christian and a mature adult with firm morals and standards I can listen to genuinely anything and not have it affect me. I'm a musician first, so when I find a song I like, I'm listening for chord progressions, riffs, drum fills, basslines, harmonies, melodies, etc. I don't really care about the lyrics that much. If they're good that's a plus but I'm always focused on composition and I'm not gonna let trashy lyrics keep me from taking inspiration and enjoyment from great songs. That being said there are definitely songs where the lyrics are so bad I just don't listen to them. But that's not for religious reasons. It's because I personally find them stupid. I think God understands that I just listen to music for the sake of musicality and doesn't really care as long as I don't believe or practice what the songs are saying. At least that's how I see it. If I stopped listening to songs because I disagreed with the band members personal beliefs I'd have to listen to almost nothing. I let God judge the musicians for what they say and do. I just listen for my love of music

Occultist imagery in Rock music goes all the way back to the mid 1960’s. Bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and later Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath all had members that were interested in the Occult. On The Beatles Sgt Pepper album you can see a picture of Occultist Aleister Crowley on the far left top corner on the album. The Rolling Stones did Occultist songs like Sympathy For The Devil and Paint It Black. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin even bought Aleister Crowley’s former house in Scotland. In PoP music, Madonna is and has always been one of the biggest users of Occultist imagery in her stuff. She did a music video in the 80’s with burning crosses. Occultist imagery is in almost every fabric of PoP culture. Occultist imagery is far far from anything new, as Occultists use practices and images that date all the way back to Ancient Civilisations of Rome, Greece, Persia (we call it Iran today) Egypt, Assyria (we call it Syria today), and Babylon (we call it Iraq today) We get this modern Satanist and Occultist stuff from people like Albert Pike Manly P Hall Aleister Crowley Helena Blavatsky Alice Bailey Anton LeVay There are actual people that do believe in a literal Satan and practice Witchcraft out there, if you think this is all just fun and games, well I’m sorry to tell you but you need to do some digging, because the more you look the more truth you find. If you want to look this stuff up for yourselves, look into Alice Bailey, she helped start the New Age Spirituality movement, which is Witchcraft and Occultism in disguise. Alice Bailey also put out a 10 step plan to weaken Christianity in the West. So you think this is all fun and games, until you understand it’s origins. .

Melonie is a little extreme. Christians are supposed to love thy neighbor etc. with that said I REALLY don't think she's a bad person. Those jokes on her Twitter were just edgy. That's how we talked in the 2000s...even if you were a gay dude we ALL said F*ggot. Turns out I'm not exactly str8. I just feel like I have to defend her. I've been supporting her up until this point. Also that is SUPERR cringe of BMTH to say that. Whether you are religious, or not. Blasphemy is cringe as it gets. It's not cool anymore, or funny. With that said I can't really say anything bad about BMTH either. I guess I respect Melonie, and I respect BMTH as well. Maybe that's what coexistence is about...Like John Locke said "forcing one religion on everyone will cause more disorder than having multiple religions." Well these days Atheism is similar to a religion. It applies both ways. Forcing radical Evangelical isn't just, and forcing Atheism isn't either. We have the first amendment for a reason. These are Agnostic people, and Christians butting heads, and that's natural in a pluralist society. I'd rather see that than a theocratic state, or a forced secular state etc. WE CAN COEXIST! WE CAN. WE ALWAYS HAVE. I'm letting both of them off the hook. I support the right of religious expression, and free speech. That's the way it was intended for America. (I know BMTH are British but so was the philosopher we plagiarized to get the First Amendment, John Locke as sited previously.)

Honestly, I've been listening to BMTH for a long time and have known they are atheist and stuff, but when they attack what I live for, it really just hurts. It's almost like they are saying f you for being a Christian even though I have never thought or said anything bad about them. I respect them for what they believe, but just don't attack what I and a lot of people live for. The majority of Christians can be very hypocritical and judgy, which is super wrong, so I get it, but please know that there are some Christians that won't attack. To the Christians that believe in canceling the band; just stop. Instead of attacking the band, try explaining why this isn't right and let them be them. In terms of people taking shots at christianity and not other religions. I can only speak from my perspective as being from ireland. I grew up with countless stories of the oppressive regime of the church. From nuns running concentration camps made up of women who happened to get pregnant out of wedlock, to pedo priests. Most people here went to catholic schools. I have memories of gay friends being told by teachers that there is something wrong with them. We had that shit forced on us five days a week, only to be told every sunday that we were going to hell. So when i take the piss out of christianity i do it from a place of personal experience. I could take shots at other religions, but i wouldnt have the same nuanced view of them that someone who grew up within the religion would. Bmth come from england so they were born into christianity. Why would they spend time taking shots at a religion they probably have no experience with, or that hasnt affected their lives in the slightest?

I think it depends who's doing it. You know, Christian politics have quite a bit of sway and cause a lot of problems in the deep south so if they were from there, anti-christian sentiment makes a ton of sense. In the case of english folks doing it, probably a little less apt for the time and place they occupy. For them they should probably be more broadly anti-faith but it's really not up to me to decide who or what people should love or hate.
@jonathanwebster70917 ай бұрын
@@toga4900well; not really. Black Sabbath weren't exactly anti-christian particularly. The message in their lyrics was/is more "Holy shit it's satan/occult stuff, don't mess around with stuff like that" (think the title track from their debut album) and not "religion is bad"/"hail satan". (Hell they even expressed that on their last album with "God Is Dead?"-definitely not anti-religion, or at least, it's not anti-theism) The former lyrical message came into metal with Motörhead (Lemmy always having lyrics that were vaguely anti-religion), the latter didn't become a thing until Venom, who were pretty much the first band to go "well actually, we think we'll sing about Satan, seriously or not, and and say it's a good thing."
@jonathanwebster70917 ай бұрын
@@anthonyricher eh, being religious in the UK is far less common than in some other countries, especially the US, but while atheists and agnostics are very common here, and society is far more secularised than for example in the US, going on and on about it (or any belief for that matter) and making it your entire personality is broadly considered to be more than a bit suspect. That extends to things like politics as well as religion: the general attitude is "oh, you believe this thing? That's great, just stop going on about it." Which is probably why people like Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins have been much, much more popular in the US than they have here, despite being British (here, they're considered a bit of a joke, especially Dawkins). So while saying something that is atheistic/critical of religion isn't remotely shocking here, being specifically anti-religion is considered a bit cringe. More for reasons of "we don't do extremes of belief here" than what the actual belief is.
@jonathanwebster70917 ай бұрын
@@anthonyricher and yes exactly. Like, I can understand Death metal bands from like Florida-or any part of the deep south- for example singing about hating Christianity, because there Christianity permeates everything and the majority of people are religious But Britain? Where less than half the population even identifies as Christian, and less than 2% of the population regularly attend any Christian place of worship? Nah, we have pretty good separation of church and state (which is ironic, because we technically legally don't have separation of church and state, our figurehead head of state is the head of that church, and we still have bishops of said church in the upper house of Parliament, even though all that is a bit of an anachronism). Nobody is being oppressed by or dominated by Christians in Britain. That also makes all those Norwegian second wave black metal bands that really, *really* hated Christianity a bit hard to understand too, because Norway is pretty similar to Britain in respect to religion (very, very secularised society, atheists and agnostics are common, yet until very recently still had no separation of church and state legally).

@@toga4900 Christian metal bands, and metal bands with Christian members or members that believe in God exist. Shit, even Christian *black* metal exists. There are plenty of bands and even whole subgenres of metal that don't sing about religion or are anti-religion. Stoner metal for example. If I were to list individual bands that don't mention God or religion in their lyrics, I'd be here all day. Lyrics don't define a type of music, lyrics are essentially a free-for-all. The vast majority of bands that use Satanic/anti-christian imagery don't do it seriously, it's just used for shock value. Slayer, early Bathory, and Possessed weren't/aren't literally wanting to sacrifice virgins to Satan. As for it being "the most anti-christian music to come out of the last century", I'd argue punk is even more so (although again, Christian punk bands exist). This is after all, a genre that blew into the mainstream with "I am an antichrist", and has an entire subgenre (anarcho-punk) that has the whole "no god, no masters" schtick about it. Add to that the fact that punk rock and related genres have always been more acceptable to the mainstream than metal, that attitude is way more impactful (as was, I would argue, the Beatles coming out with things like 'We're Bigger Than Jesus' and the whatever 'Imagine' was supposed to be). That's way, way more impactful and influential than the metal bands that *are* anti-christian, and even more so than the even fewer number that are actual satanists. Because after all, getting 'big' in terms of the metal community isn't 'big' in mainstream terms.
