Both tell the same story from different perspectives if you really think about it. The vocal version tells a story of a person who's lost all hope, with nobody to help them. He commits suicide not long after. The instrumental version conveys the viewpoint/perspective of a friend of the suicide victim who either didn't notice the victim's depression, or never could have helped him out of said depression. After the day of the victim's death, he kept berating himself. Repeating words along the lines of "I could've done better", "I should have known", or "I should've helped him. I should've been there!". Overtime, he goes from self-berating to changing what he remembered happened, going as far as to denying it even occurred.
