Earlier that same year, my great-grandfather's cousin, Sacha, was shot down after defeating a squadron of German fighters. He survived the crash landing, but both of his legs were badly damaged. Comrade Stalin put him in a gulag in 1946. Sacha almost died there, but on March 6th, 1953, the news reached him that Stalin was dead. A week later, after Stalin's funeral, he was released. When Yasha saw him, he asked him: "Sacha, how were you able to escape?" "I didn't," Sacha replied. "Malenkov freed me. I wonder, would Comrade Stalin have done the same?" "Under one of his disciples, I wouldn't have thought otherwise," Yasha told him. "Is it true that he's gone? Without Stalin, how will the Soviet Union survive?"
