finally a godamn video that actually tells you, "hey, these are the main topics of art in a general way. Learn all of them" instead of going to an abstract, ethereal, lovely nonsense of feelings and point of views that make them an artist, but you can't learn that, you earn that in the process. you need tangible things served bit by bit for easy assimilation. See you in a year to see how I improved following these steps. Let me list everything in this video that I love: - Defining fundamentals concisely and clearly - A chart. Just a basic, clear, linear lesson plan - No wait, TWO charts depending on your focus - Immediately useful resources (Quickposes is already my favorite thing) - Other artists to study - Calm and relaxed presentation - Heck, you even worked the sponsorship in so casually that it didn't bother me Also, I gotta say that seeing your face was really helpful. Didn't realize this until the video was over, but when I'm watching a video where the person is talking about one thing and drawing another, I usually tune one or the other out, or I'm frustrated that their doing art things that they're not explaining. Just watching and listening to someone talk to me made more of a difference than I realized. I'm sure the fact that you're gorgeous didn't hurt but I think it'd be true regardless. For poses, I don't recommend looking up poses in sports matches, because some reference photos have the subject's gravity/centre point floating in the air, there's not much gesture to refer to when someone's gravity point is quite awkward due to momentum/inertia. Instead search for poses that is interesting, like gesture, or shape design like that, instead of something very mundane that doesn't really show obvious interesting characteristics.

The third vanishing point would be at the zenith or nadir (depending on whether you're looking up or down). It's worth noting that 1,2,3-point perspective applies to a cube. You can have infinitely many vanishing points in an image because every set of parallel lines has its own vanishing point. I like the advice, but I would put perspective as the first thing to learn and practice - it helps you think 3-dimensionally and you'll do a much better job at foreshortening and breaking things down into shapes when you've practiced drawing cubes etc. in perspective.

I didn't even know what the fundamentals *were* at the time lol I feel like if I had someone break down what the fundamentals were and how to practice them when I started out, I would have made much, much more progress over the past couple years (instead of fumbling around for months figuring bits and pieces out on my own). It was really disheartening at times, but luckily, I stuck with it. This is a great video, especially for beginners like me. Found a trick that allows him to have complex funds effortlessly. As a fact, he can draw an entire manga chapter in semi-realistic style in one day. There is a documentary of him here on KZbin, you should see it. It changed my way of thinking, as there is not only effort and study, also finding your own tricks and shortcuts, your way. Martin Peña this is actually very true. OP check out any of the mangaka documentaries posted by YUNYUN. So studying anatomy based on my art idols is actually a good idea? I was always told never to do that and stick to real life only?
@kylo26054 жыл бұрын
When it comes to drawing anime and shit, that is if you plan on drawing anime, I was told you must start with realism. By starting with realism you will already have a good understanding of the fundamentals which will make drawing anime easier i guess. Personally, I never started with realism and I never will. We're all different in many ways so just because one person got to where they are from doing realism doesn't you have to do that too. I guess as long as you can grasp a basic understanding of the fundamentals and apply them to your drawings, realism isn't important unless you're trying to achieve a realistic style.
@tartagliasjigglydworshipper4 жыл бұрын
I studied real world shapes and form but draw them in the style I want to use in the long run. the simplest analogy I can give is that, art is like writing. you follow certain rules like grammar and stuff, but you write them through your own penmanship. you can follow art theories while using your own "penmanship"

@@kylo2605 that advice follows with the explanation that 'you can't bend rules if you don't know the rules' so if you have a good grasp of the basics, it's easier to branch away from that and do less realistic styles with a strong understanding of how objects interact

I like how you confused yourself with the three point perspective - this was an eye opener and inspiration! Thank you so much for this video, it really helps and taught me more than what my art teacher has been trying to teach me in two years. Thank you so much! And YES! I get scared to draw background or study them because it's really hard! And yes, you're not alone... Which is a good thing. Regardless this video was really helpful ^^

Thank you so much for this video. I recently started drawing and painting and had no clue where to start. While I am interested in drawing people or characters, I have a strong pull towards backgrounds. Your guideline for background focus has given me the push I needed to consistently practice and improve my art skills. Again, thank you so much!

I feel like I'm the only person who loves drawing backgrounds based on the comments here 😅 Probably because I was never good at characters, but flowers and backgrounds I am. I find perspective and foreshortening way easier to do when making backgrounds than when I'm using characters since they have limbs and things that must stay the same length no matter the angles.

Everyone learns differently. Some people can just focus on one thing and practise it to get better, some people need to start with the fundamentals or to start with simply tracing. I found over the years I couldn't stick with one topic and draw it over and over and began turning my sketchbook into a comic. Now while not the smartest thing for most people to do with a sketchbook, it worked for me because it forces me to draw MANY different things that typically I'd avoid if I was choosing to focus on one thing at a time. Find what works and motivates you. Comics for me also mean I can focus on story telling, pacing and character visual expression on top of the other stuff I'm terrified of drawing over and over. Again, this works for me as motivation to dive into drawing different things I would normally avoid like backgrounds, machinery, perspective ect... more difficult things that I struggle with and this way I can also see where I am impoving over time and where we aren't alot easier than I would drawing one thing over and over. Again find what works for you and keeps you interested and motivated. That's the key to improving any skill you want to learn.

Lately, I've been trying out both backgrounds and practicing adding artificial light sources to my compositions. Found this video in my recommended feed, loved it and learned a bit more that I didn't hear in art school. Though I've been practicing the two topics mentioned before, I think I'll still practice the skills I need for them because it feels like a big hurdle for me. Practicing them now just kind of feels like testing the waters. Good video! Subbed and will probably watch your older videos for more stuff like this.

what I've gathered here is simple, these are the fundamentals, and pick the ones you need most depending on what you want to draw first: Character artist? Anatomy and gestures, followed by color/lighting. Background artist? Perspective/composition followed by color/lighting. And so on and so forth. Thanks for the lesson my man, much love!

@Sora_Nai4 жыл бұрын
Will first to start, im guessing you want to draw figures. Then start with drawing the character its self. 1. Start with figure drawing and shapes. Trying to learn to much anatomy over the gesture of the figure then the drawing will always look off. Learn the gesture of the character as a stick figure drawing but with flow weight and motion. Basically your gonna try to make the dam best stick figure you possibly can. The stick figure should never look like an actual stick and stale, it should have motion weight and you should know where its facing all the time. 2. After you have gotten at least 20 hrs of good figure drawing in then move on to putting some meat on those gesture drawings. By learning gestures first you'll start seeing faster results since it will become easier to add muscle to an already structured figure youll then have to make since of what muscle is more highlighted which has more weight and the such( note 20hrs should be spread out through different sessions of 90mins max each. Ex. 90min session rest 15 to 30 mins then another session or 90mins everyday for 14 days. This is so you can remember what youve learned if you practice within 3 hrs before you sleep your brain remembers and starts forming new neural pathways for the skill your learning. As you do more focused practice you'll get better faster since neurons that wire together fire together. Meaning if your a beginner then you have no neurons for the skills you which to learn hence its difficult at first but when you sleep you build new neurons from practice an everything you've learn that day more within 3hrs since you fell asleep. Then once you have gone through the first few frustrating hrs of practice everyday it will become more and more easier and clearer to understand as the neurons form and start connecting in your mind you'll then start connecting different things you've learn with old experiences together and will form a understanding of drawing.)

For doing poses in motion, I'd also recommend going to youtube and looking for some choreography/dance videos , watching them at regular speed, then watching them at half-speed and picking some random points to sketch. Drawing from flat stills on google images is good for getting the form, but I find it helps a lot to see the leading motion and follow-through in terms of making the drawing look more fluid and less posed. Thank you for this video!!!
