Wish farm is literally the best thing I did with my budget. My wish list has a million items, honestly, but I never get stressed about not having them. Because being on the wish list means it will happen someday. My favorite purchase so far was a foot rest I purchased for my husband, a completely stress-free gift. And right now, I look forward to saving up for a fancy suit! ❤

money is pretty tight but using the wish farm for the first time this month i still funded my birthday party, hit my first savings goal after car repairs, AND funded my yearly nail polish sale purchase, this time from the fancy brand i always wanted but thought i couldnt afford. 🎉 it was exciting instead of stressful

Hey Hannah! Came to watch the wish farm vid for a refresher and saw there was a new one out :). Currently have a wish farm for a king size bed and bed frame. Wife and I have been on a Queen for 20 years. It's time to splurge!

I didn’t realize this had a name! I saved and splurged on a color analysis that would have absolutely been a wish. Definitely adding this to my spending plan!

I love the Wish Farm! But I do like to keep it a little simpler when it comes to the number of categories. Instead of having a separate group and categories for the Wish List, I just use the notes section of each of my Wish Farm categories to write my wish lists in. When I accomplish one wish, I just refer to my list of wishes in the notes section and change the name of the category in the Wish Farm. It means I don't have to deal with hiding old wish categories or deleting them and recategorizing transactions. Of course, this means that my reports are showing wish farm activity as separate than if I had recategorized the transaction to a similar category elsewhere in my budget. But I'm okay with seeing how much of my additional or leftover income went to current wishes versus retirement savings, for example.
@YNABofficial
@YNABofficial Ай бұрын
Ahhhh!! That makes sense! So you just track the small wishes on the small wish farm item's notes, the medium wishes on the medium wish farm item's notes, and the large on the large. Definitely simpler!! Sometimes I find it helpful to see all my wishes out in the open because every once in a while I realize I have a big reshuffling I want to do (aka: I realize I actually wanted the sneakers sooner than the mop, so I'll swap one out for the other), but I also appreciate a nice tidy YNAB! Definitely a smart new spin on the wish farm. Thanks for sharing! 🌻 Hannah
@zeldakasumi
@zeldakasumi Ай бұрын
@YNABofficial Exactly, that's how I track them. :) And, I use cut and paste if I ever wish to rearrange wishes in my notes lists a bit or swap out what I'm currently saving for. It's great, though, that YNAB has so much flexibility, so we can all adjust things to be how we like them, i.e. for more visibility or for more simplicity. Thanks so much to y'all at YNAB for the great app and great videos you share with us! 👍
@zeldakasumi

@@YNABofficial Exactly, that is how I do it! And, when I want to "reshuffle" because my priorities have changed, I just change the name of the category, instead of having to move the funds to the new wish item category. I'm glad, though, that YNAB is so customizable, so we can choose set-ups that have either more visibility or more simplicity as we prefer. Thank you to everyone at YNAB for making such a great app and videos for us!

Great use case for YNAB. I love your product and I find these types of use cases very helpful and interesting. I am a retiree and I realize that I am not exactly your target customer group, but have you thought about doing a video about how a retired person would use YNAB? Just door for thought.

Love this. It's such a good psychology hack. But I'm curious to hear how others balance the different directions money can go when it isn't budgeted for a specific need. For example, there are many examples of having a "fun money" category but how does this relate to a wish farm? If I have money in "fun money" and I would like to buy something relatively inexpensive, it probably just gets bought right away rather than joining the wish farm. Or do you use fun money to fund a wish farm each month? Another example - if you have some extra dollars, how do you rationalize sprinkling them into the wish farm rather than putting them towards future months' needed expenses? I'm sure these are all subjective questions but I am trying to develop my own philosophy and hearing others' thoughts helps a lot!
@ScribeGirl10

At minute 3:08 in the video she talks about how to define a small, medium, large items in your wish farm. And how if you only have small items you may never get to your potential large items. As for putting money towards potential future month's expenses... step four of YNAB's four step process is to get one month ahead. Whether or not you want to prioritize that is something you get to decide yourself. There's no right or wrong choice. For me personally, if the item is between $45 and $100 it's in the "small Wish Farm category". (For me, my "Fun Money" category is more for things like books and unexpected events I might get invited to with friends that month.)

I'm afraid I don't have the option to turn of the "Due by Date" function - Not shown in my interface in my computer. Anyone with the same issue?
@YNABofficial

Howdy Steven! No problem-you're likely looking at a different target type! To turn the due date function off, make sure to be using the "Custom" target type and select the "I want to: have a balance of" target behavior. Here, you can toggle the due date on or off! 🌻 Hannah

What does deleting and re-categorizing do?
@yarnstead
@yarnstead Ай бұрын
I just hide them when I don’t need them any more. Some people prefer to do it the way described in the video to avoid having those extra categories hanging around.
@hoshiro.exsharaen
@hoshiro.exsharaen Ай бұрын
Deleting the wish farm is just for cleaning up so your budget does not get cluttered with one-time-use categories. Of course you can hide it instead. Recategorizing the transaction is to better reflect the purchase (like Hannah did, electric mop is a household item).
@Ineedcoffee17
@Ineedcoffee17 Ай бұрын
@@hoshiro.exsharaen thanks. What I'm not getting is if it's deleted how will it show up under the re-categorized category later? Or is it just to know the total spent in a category later when I'm reflecting or looking at "money spent last month" etc?
@elzarb
@elzarb Ай бұрын
The way I see it, the button should say “recategorize” instead of “delete”. But delete is what we’re trying to do.
@hoshiro.exsharaen
@hoshiro.exsharaen Ай бұрын
@@Ineedcoffee17 because every transactions must have a category. YNAB will complain if we're trying to input a new transaction without selecting a category (it will show overspending). Deleting a category without recategorizing means all transactions under that category will be orphaned (no category), which will mess out budget. We can no longer trust our budget since there are uncategorized transactions. Where did the money come from to fund those transactions? That's why YNAB requires us to select a new category when deleting a category (recategorizing).
