I think hardware cloth should replace the chicken wire in the front and back. Love the garden cart base for mobility. Will it be meat birds or layers first?

love your chicken tractor. I would lightly sand all your existing wood and coat with linseed oil. it will make your frame and floor last longer and make a washing out easier and water resistant.

You had me on the edge of my seat unloading that tractor lol. All in all, I guess it "came out pretty good" 😜 Thanks again brougham!

I saw that as a possibility from the beginning of the shot. I always think about the what ifs when doing stuff. Seen way too many bad things happen. Lol

I'm getting 4 ducks this year. Since they don't roost, they need a duck house on the ground, so my setup has to be a bit different than this. I'm very curious how much they will be able to forage and how much I can grow for them in my yard. We have about 1/3 acre, but it's not 100% percent garden as there is a house, shop, shed and some other landscaping, but I'm trying to grow as much food as I can reasonably fit here.

Love this! Any thoughts on a “meat bird” specific tractor? I’d ultimately, like it to be dual use. For raising meat birds, foremost. But, I think the laying hen posse would benefit as well.

I'm working on creating my own dual purpose bird right now. I've got lavender and buff orpingtons, a jersey giant rooster and some red broilers. We're gonna start crossing this spring to see what we get. I'm working towards a good disposition and size simultaneously.

Hopefully William I can get a good compost going this year. Last year was a failure. The last four years has been frustrating in that area since moving to North Idaho 4 years ago. Eugene, Oregon was a milder climate. The guy we got compost from retired two years ago. And William, I’m turning 67 on the 15th. Flipping all that compost is no easy chore. Great exercise but probably takes me 4 times longer than you. Not giving up; I’m a bit stubborn.

It appears to be 4x8 and that metal comes in 2x8 sheets. Flat-Free tires would be more reliable as those always need air.

@heavymechanic2 Thank you! I couldn't tell if he had cut those sheets or not.

One thing I am curious about is what you will use for the carbon bedding. Filling that thing with purchased pine chips once a week will be an expense that you didn't mention.

I've been using straw in a similar method for a few years now. Idk what William recommends tho.

My favorite thing to date is leaves. Put into garbage bags when dry, they keep surprisingly well all winter, and the one year I did this ( have moved a couple times and haven't had chickens in awhile now), the mice didn't eat into the bags and make nests, like my husband, understandably, thought they would. Several were kept in an un-heated garage, rest were outside ( nw WI), upside down to reduce likelihood of water infiltration thru the tied off open end of bag. The leaves didn't get all moist and started clumping and packing together quickly, or at all really, like I'd thought they might ( most leaves weren't chopped up, we'd gotten them already bagged from friends in town). I loved them the most for nest bedding !

#PermacultureQ&A Hi William awesome video! I wanted to ask does the size of biochar material matter when incorporating it into the soil or compost? If I pulverize it into a powder form would that make any difference when compared to the chucky size?
