I love Julian’s comment about the custom made stretcher, “probably nobody’s ever going to see it apart from a few of you folks..”. Julian, you have 1.75 million followers, if only 10% of us see it, it probably qualifies as one of the most viewed stretchers…ever! Fantastic job, as ever. I just wish your videos lasted longer….🙂💕

Roughly translated as "(The) True Image of (R.F.P-a religious title?) of Remigo, a Capuchin (Friar) from Bolzano, whose death (in?) Bolzano (MAV-could be a month of May?) In the Year of Christ 1647, His Age [lacunae or blank],,,,(Reli..[blurred]). At least we know his name was Remigius in Latin or Remigio in common Italian, who died in Bolzano in 1647. I didn't think I wanted to see a funeral painting, but I really like this one. I think the artist took pains NOT to make this brother look morbid. The quiet happiness of his facial expression and those wonderful flowers really lift the mood of this work despite it's darkness. And the restoration brought out all the richness of those dark jewel tones. All topped off with that beautiful frame.

I especially love that you were able to find the info needed to recreate the inscription. It's like being able to put a name on an unmarked grave, in many ways. Someone who was forgotten is remembered again, for the first time in probably over a hundred years. That's the kind of gift that you really can't put a price on, a little bit of a rebirth for someone long gone.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one! I honestly get jealous of men's shirt patterns - I like flowers, but I can't stand the large splashy or garish ones you get on the fabrics for women's clothing. Or the garish background colours. There's a huge middle ground between OTT and beige/oatmeal, but you wouldn't know that from women's clothing.
@stephgreen3070

This is called a ditsy floral pattern (ditsy isn’t always floral, but that is the most common small-scale motif) and it is increasingly fashionable right now. When searching for clothing, especially on line, just type “ditsy” in the search field and you will narrow down your floral choices to this small, random pattern. 👍🏼

Clearly, the artist had great affection for his fallen friend. I imagine painting the memorial of someone who you lived and worked with for many years must be both tender and difficult. Perhaps the great faith of a monk, with certainty of heaven, made such things more bearable. The face of the subject has an expression such as would be seen in life, the furrowed brow and peaceful smile. A lovely tribute to what one hopes was a good man, well loved by his fellows.

I'm a collector of Naval themed, early 20th century, photography. I just acquired large 5 panel action photo sequence of a vessel underway. All the images were taken moments from each other. They had been matted, one over the other, almost 90 years ago. The matting had gone so brittle that almost any touching would turn the mat to dust. Plus the mat and backing were not acid free and was affecting the original photos and they needed to be de-acidified. The results by the studio are magnificent. Inline with the level of work you perform. I understand the joy and pride your customer feels when seeing his acquisition fully restored. I just need a frame for mine. His is wonderful. Strange to think that this may have been the only portrait ever produced of the man in the painting and he never got to see it.

There is some benefit to folding the tacking edges back under. By protecting the very edges of the canvas from being disturbed, you prevent them from fraying and thus the painting’s tacking edges will last longer. And by holding them down tight, it may also help to keep insects, dust, dirt, and other things from getting between the tacking edge and the frame, where they would be harder for a conservator to clean off.

As damaged as this painting was, I seriously had doubts that it could be conserved. With all of the missing original paint, I thought there was no way to fill in and match the finished artwork that was intended by the artist. I was completely wrong. If the old Masters could see your work, you would be considered a Master of equal talent in your own right. I think this is one of the worst paintings you took on in the last year or so we have been watching your videos and we were totally amazed at the outcome. There was no indication to us, of the purples in the painting until it was conserved. Watching you retouch the letters in the name was a magical process for us as the finished product looked, what we felt was exactly as the original artist meant it to be. Thank you, Julian, for an amazing transformation.

Thank you Julian. This one was extra interesting. I always like seeing the owner and hearing their motivations.

Fantastic job on this painting. I really enjoyed seeing the owner’s expression when he saw the finished painting. It was almost a bit of the Divine looking over this painting. Thanks for sharing.
