Bringing service dog to school // TIPS

I was very nervous the first time I brought my dog to school, and I wanted to watch videos to get tips before I took Dallas to school for the first time.
So I wanted to make a video to tell y’all about the things that helped me prepare to bring my dog to school, and things to make a school day easier for both me and my dog.

OMG SAME. Im bringing my service dog to school in september. Im just getting him on the 24th. So its been a full year and now im getting him for real. And he is the FIRST service dog ever. Im in highschool and the school has never had one. So its a whole new thing!!!!

I go to a private school, and the paperwork part is super true. They chose to follow the ADA (thank god for me) but they required her training paperwork, and a bunch of other documents that proved that I needed her at school (luckily once again, I have a fainting disorder so that was easy enough to prove). Then once that was done, we gave my dog a tour of the school and finally, we met all my teachers (that were present that day) and told them about the rules. A week later I brought my dog to school, because my school needed time to tell all the students how to act.

I only let people pet my SD when she’s off duty, and I will tell them, “yes you can pet her because she doesn’t have her vest on.” Or “because she’s not working right now.” That way they know the boundaries before they ever touch her. Great video!

Something I feel like all handlers should have on them is a little bag with treats, a small chew toy, your dogs paperwork (by paperwork I mean training, Ada law cards, medicinal info, ect. Yes I know some service dogs are owner trained, so it can/will vary between handlers) incase someone is being difficult and not letting you in, or a ball. Especially if you take your dog to school, during your small 5 minute break throw the ball for them to expel some energy. Little things like that just boost the dogs day ❤ You can also get stickers to attach on their harness, I have heard those help. Little things like: Please do not pet me I'm bussy, don't take photos please it's rude.

if all goes well my pup (that im picking up in 2 days!!!! Ahhhh im so excited!!!) will be mature enough to handle my 4 hours of classes by next year march (she'll be a year old and its like 10 students in my class and like maybe 30 students in the school overall so not a highly distracting or busy environment) So I've been doing more and more research into the best training for school, tips on how to manage etc. Im in South Africa so service dogs are basically unheard of. (So much so that my mom who's 42 and my dad who is 50 didnt even knew they existed. i happened to stumble onto Lexie Godbout's channel 3 years ago😅) So im already anxious and nervous about what might happen, it is a public school (for "adults" but anyone can join. Im 17) So im hoping there wont be any childish interaction. Its also in a rather.... bad neighbourhood so im hoping that my SD will be intimidating enough to scare off potential threats. (As I said im in South Africa so service dogs are really really rare and so are guide dogs, but people here dont know that she is not allowed to be aggressive.) Edit: My anxiety is what is disabling to me, up to the point where i dropped out of school at 14 because I couldnt handle the stress. (And yes, im 17 now, do the math and realize how terrible that is) Which sucks because I LOVE LOVE LOVE learning, and online school would not work for me as im not able to focus when im on my own😂

Wish wish I saw these videos before hand! This is the first time in college with my service dog and we have had a lot of trials and errors. But I managed to learn things and how to also have my working companion do her work but not be bored to death either. This video was so useful so I am glad I learn some new tips for my service dog. I’m so glad! That first year is the hardest. Dallas went through a lot of phases but after the first semester she started to get used to it. Now is my second year and she does amazing and is so comfortable here

My school mad me jump through a million hoops to bring my animal to school. I needed a ridiculous amount of forms and letters and documentation (some of the same forms multiple times because they needed “more information”) It was extremely frustrating. It took close to a full semester to get her to school with me and then residence life tried to fine me even though she was approved through the school disability office. No one was on the same page. And eventually we essentially moved in with my fiancé (at the time boyfriend) because I was tired of being harassed by almost every school office.

So just make sure that the school offices are communicating with each other and be that point of contact between offices if they won’t take the initiative to do it themselves

I have really bad anxiety at school, since I feel like there is no way I can escape from it there. My family is looking to get a bigger dog, and I’m hoping we can find someone near us to help train them! Hey! My main concern would be people going behind my back and petting my dog + nasty teachers. It’s a crowded classroom and my pup has a good bladder but would need to go out once during a period, with the oval thing I may be able to get a sensory pass or even during a lunch break to let him run the oval, or even walk the school as it’s quite big, any tips of explaining to a school that doesn’t understand his schedule?

How did you prepare your dog for long down stays?

Honestly just lots of practice. When she stands up I just put her back in a down stay. She will move around sometimes to get comfortable. Dallas is really smart, so When she would stand up I would have her lay back down and give her treats. She soon realized that if she stands up I’ll ask her to lay down and she will get treats. So I had to stop doing that. But after so long she just knows the drill

Can y’all help me. Im a 13 year old girl with severe anxiety like to the point of strokes. But 2 things are wrong one my mom lost her job last year and we can’t afford a service dog but I really need one. They can cost up to 5k for a dog that I’m wanting. My public school says that I have to have training papers at least like a basic obedience paper but he’s owner trained I’ve never took him to a trainer ever so I don’t know what to do

So what your school is doing by asking you for papers is actually a violation of your rights and they are breaking the law. They are probably uneducated about service dog laws. What I would do is print out copies from the ADA.gov website and show them that the dog doesn’t need papers. You may have to push really hard and sometimes people even have to take legal actions so they can have their dog with them. Hopefully it works out for you. But they are in the wrong for requiring that. And even if the school board says that they need to require papers then the school board is breaking the law.

I haven’t taken my dog to church enough to make a video on it. But I do know that service animals don’t have public access in churches. It’s the church who has to grant the access for your dog to be there. Another thing is everyone at church seems to be overly friendly and wants to pet, talk to, and compliment the dog. If u let one person do it then everyone will. So u may have to stand up for yourself a bit and just kindly let them know that u appreciate the compliments but she is working so please don’t distract her/him. At church the dog should be okay with laying in one spot for a long time and not be disruptive, And not get scared at loud instrument sounds. That’s all the tips I have for church.

As long as your pup has a good down stay and leave it then u are set. I put Dallas in a down stay out of the way. She stayed there the whole class and wouldn’t eat anything that was dropped on the floor. But if you need your dog to stay by u then that would work also just as long as they have a good leave it command around food

I want to bring my service dog to my senior year however they said the denied other service dog handlers in the past, but u can still try. I'm a little nervous that we will be denied, we are in a public school. Any advice?

They are breaking the law if they deny you. And if they denied others before you then they broke the law then to. I’d ask to have a meeting and print out the ADA laws and present them during the meeting. Explain to them what your dog does for you and let them know that your dog has been trained and will not cause any issues. If they then deny you after that you can always say “well according to ADA federal law it is illegal to deny me the right to have my service dog in a public school. If you choose to deny me of my legal rights I will have to take it upon myself to take legal action.”

Do you know if i'll need shot records or a doctors note even if it's a public school? They're supposed to follow ADA guidelines and I know it states places cant ask to see proof but idk if its different since its a school😅

I'm not in America so idk how things work with the ada, but its probably a good idea to bring them with you, (if you are comfortable) showing your school your doctors note and vet records may make them more accepting of you and your dog, as it shows that you are prepared and willing to work with the school. and if you don't show them at the beginning, having them with you means you can show them if they ask, rather than having to come back another day with them

Dallas has never had an accident at school, she has thrown up at school and I just get stuff to clean it up. The last time she had an accident was at universal bc she over heated and got diarrhea. It was embarrassing but u just have to understand that dogs make mistakes and sometimes it’s out of their control bc they get sick. If they are having accidents a lot when they are working that might be something to talk to a trainer about to see how u can work on that
