In this video I show you the general training process for training behavior interruptions and alerts to your service dog. We start with identifying the behavior you want interrupted or alerted to. Examples could be repetitive behaviors like leg shaking, tapping, nail biting, picking etc. or they could be precursors to an escalated medical episode like crying, hands over face, rocking etc. We then teach the dog a specific alert behavior like paws up, chin rest, or nose boop. Once the dog has trained the behavior to fluency, we pair this behavior with the human behavior we want alerted to (also called cue transfer). This video broadly goes over this service dog training framework.

I never taught Stella to do migraine alert she did it naturally thankfully but my next service dog may not be able to

Yes Epsilon recognises anxiety scratch and gives persistent nudge alerts and has gained confidence and will now jump up gently to re-cue handler to do something and as a last resort a quiet and short but insistent bark. She amazes me with her growing awareness. We also have an interupt crying AD task. This is taking more time for handler to learn to cue well and consistently but Eps is terrific at it in surprising moments when handler is not being aware or focused and it is real distress and uncued. I guess handler emotions have scents that make sense.

@@marionkirkham8576 yes, the most important part is the solid alert behavior foundation and then generalizing. If you're looking for more structured help, definitely check out the course! One of my clients is currently testing the course and she has remarked multiple times on how many steps she skipped with her last dog, and that this alert is so much more reliable because of the courses thorough layout. Happy Training!

Real Certified service dogs are totally amazing. My wife has a goldendoodle. She is Certified Service Dog and is awesome. Alerts to migraines. High/low blood pressure. Panic attacks. and more. I wish Australia had a national register for qualified assistance animals. The current legislation is a bit of a mess with local council, state and federal law being inconsistent and not appiled to meet current commonwealth disability discrimination act. That makes things difficult and complicated and highly stressful (which I feel is unnecessary). Recognition of PWD public access rights with Assistance Animals is a slow process. I am grateful the number of people who recognise these rights is growing. I am grateful clips from this awesome channel help in growing that awareness.

I trained this type of alert for my sdit, it took months with lots of breaks. He is a dog that get very far with breaks between learning behaviors. It took time and was a bit hard because I needed to learn how to teach this. He loves doing this today and do it every time I need it. He does boob me and jump up if I don’t respond after a few times.
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 2 ай бұрын
Giving dogs learning breaks can definitely be such a helpful strategy! I use this often if I"m struggling with a behavior. I shelve it for a bit, and then pick it up in a few weeks, or even months!

Thanks! This will be good for teaching my puppy to alert to my arm scratching, which happens with my anxiety but is so often overlooked by trainers who train in big groups, like Assistance Dogs Australia. I think I'll need the 'high counter' task, so many counters aren't accessible to me.

I don't recommend training them to bite, you could do deep pressure therapy though or train them to put their feet on your lap and lick you. You could train them to jump on you and put their feet on you, but I don't recommend that if you are small and have a very large dog, they could knock you over if you aren't expecting it.

Hey Jewel! I'm so glad you're excited for the course! You actually have 2 full years from date of purchase to access the course. That way you can review the material as needed. I also wanted to be sure you could work on foundation skills with a puppy, and then revisit the alerting portion as the pup gets older and more mature. As far as clickers go, a little bit depends on personal preference. I like this style: amzn.to/3UOJeXB

Do you think a PSD could be trained to alert someone who dissociates? For me that is “mentally checking out” at certain times. (I can give an example if you need more info). If the dog is able to alert for that, is there something afterwards they would they do to help? I was wondering if maybe some kind of “grounding” but idk

It seems like boop would be the easiest for the dog to do in every position?
@mobstercrow7515
@mobstercrow7515 2 ай бұрын
I've been wondering about this too. My psychiatrist said that I dissociate and I honestly don't know much about it. I thought I was just zoning out often, but I guess not. It would be nice to train my next service dog to snap me out if it. When I zone out, I don't even know that I'm doing it so sometimes I just sit there staring at someone on accident for about 10-15 minutes. I'm going to college in a year or two, so it would be nice to train my prospect to interrupt it so I don't miss out on information.
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 2 ай бұрын
A lot of this would depend on what the physical manifestation of the dissociation is. Some dogs can naturally alert to chemical changes, but to train it from scratch, you'd need to be doing a physical behavior that is different than anything else that you do, that you can train the dog to. For instance, if you are walking around your house and suddenly you just go slow and trance-like, that might be something the dog could alert to.
