CLIP DESCRIPTION:
First, Susan (Katharine Hepburn) rips David's (Cary Grant) jacket. Then David rips Susan's dress and they try to avoid embarrassment.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant star in this inspired comedy about a madcap heiress with a pet leopard who meets an absent-minded paleontologist and unwittingly makes a fiasco of both their lives. David Huxley (Grant) is the stuffy paleontologist who needs to finish an exhibit on dinosaurs and thus land a $1 million grant for his museum. At a golf outing with his potential benefactors, Huxley is spotted by Susan Vance (Hepburn) who decides that she must have the reserved scientist at all costs. She uses her pet leopard, Baby, to trick him into driving to her Connecticut home, where a dog wanders into Huxley's room and steals the vital last bone that he needs to complete his project. The real trouble begins when another leopard escapes from the local zoo and Baby is mistaken for it, leading Huxley and Susan into a series of harebrained and increasingly more insane schemes to save the cat from the authorities. Inevitably, the two end up in the local jail, where things get even more out of hand: Susan pretends to be the gun moll to David's diabolical, supposedly wanted criminal. Naturally, the mismatched pair falls in love through all the lunacy. Director Howard Hawks delivers a funny, fast-paced, and offbeat story, enlivened by animated performances from the two leads, in what has become a definitive screwball comedy.

I was amazed to learn that this movie was a box office flop when it was released in 1938, considering how entertaining it is. When I first saw this a few decades ago, I was amazed at the speed of the dialogue, since I used to think that life back in the day was much slower lol. This screwball comedy is still funny today (2019).

Maybe it was a flop, because the audience couldn't keep up with the dialogue or the wit!

The film was several decades ahead of its time, and even today would be considered a bit raunchy. For them, 'Bringing Up Baby' had to have been a MASSIVE no-no. lol

@@har5814 Then you should hear Hawkes "His Girl Friday" with Grant and Rosalind Russell of you want rapid fire 🔥 dialogue that overlaps. Though that film was 1940 and "BUP" was first in 1938.

The jacket ripping scene was directly homaged in Peter Bogdanovich’s hilarious tribute to this film, “What’s Up, Doc?” with Barbra Streisand in Hepburn’s part and Ryan O’Neal in Grant’s part.

Peter Bogdanovich's film _What's Up, Doc?_ (1972), starring Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neal, was intended as an homage to the film, and has contributed to its reputation. In the commentary track for _Bringing Up Baby_ , Bogdanovich discusses how the coat-ripping scene in _What's Up, Doc?_ was based on the scene in which Grant's coat and Hepburn's dress are torn in _Bringing Up Baby_ .

This movie began every romantic comedy that ever existed. All great love stories begin with two people ripping off each other's clothes off in a restaurant bar. He didn't have very good intentions. I'd still play those games if I hadn't been made irrelevant due to the intentionally inflicted illnesses and planned medical mistreatments, nor the thefts of my property. You must have need lots of paper. Give me my money back! Remember when you tried driving me off the road, it was just like the chicken scene. No? You do not recall? Maybe it was someone else...

The Katherine Hepburn character in this movie is a complete sociopath with no regard to anything but her own selfish needs. I don't get why people celebrate her exploits. Is it because she's pretty?

Partly, yes. But her obnoxiousness is in itself comically exaggerated--it's a somewhat more astute portrayal of the "dizzy dame" stereotype. It also blinds her to reality--makes her stupid--so that's a kind of slapstick. After all, why is slapstick "funny" in the first place? Think of how blinded by his own basic needs Chaplin is! Furthermore, the character of Grant is also hugely comical; the value of his work, lampooned and the intelligence of a man who engages in scientific research called into question. In a way, it's an entirely nihilistic moment--and humor falls in that direction anyway!
