especially being in the city. Everythimg should be open all night. Imagine how many jobs would be created
@BrisbaneChannel
@BrisbaneChannel 5 жыл бұрын
I think it's not practical if people aren't out all night, so it's kinda connected to the lifestyle of the city's people. Most businesses would lose money if they were open 24 hours in Brisbane, and some may be forced to close, which would have the opposite effect on employment levels! But what I can't understand is places closing at 3 or 4 in the afternoon on a weekday, when there's thousands of people walking past each hour that probably would spend money there if the places weren't closed. I am happy that there are SOME 24 hour places, and that's something I'll be exploring in an upcoming 24 hour challenge, but I don't think it's practical to have too many of them.

Brisbane stopped being a big country town 30 years ago, but for whatever reason the moniker still sticks. Now its evolving into a thriving world city and that’s what makes it exciting to live here and see the progress.
@BrisbaneChannel
@BrisbaneChannel 5 жыл бұрын
It's all relative, and the "countryness" of it doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. I think the laid-back nature of Queenslanders is one thing that many like about Brissie. The whole "world city" thing kinda sounds like Brisbane City Council's "New World City" phrasing. I'm sure Brisbane has changed a lot, but I don't think that phrase expresses what Brisbane is, personally.

As a person who works on the public front line with tourists I can tell you Brisbane is definitely not a highlight for visitors. It's a stopover for the Gold and Sunshine Coasts or a hub to fly to northern Queensland. It's a pretty sleepy place for shopping and nightlife with most places empty in the evening in the middle of the week. The Valley is somewhat interesting but lack of assertive policing makes it a bit of a circus with massive queues outside anywhere half decent. All in all, Asia is kicking Australia's butt in terms of its city life. If you want a decent night out, avoid Australia - although of course it's still magnificent for its landscape and coastline and all the things you can do there. I had more fun in Hong Kong on a long weekend than I did in Sydney or Melbourne ever.

Well, we've done really well with the whole Covid-19 thing. Employment can be more challenging here than the two bigger Australian cities, depending on your industry. What I've discovered is that each city has its own qualities, you just need to know the city better to really understand and appreciate the place. I could say that Melbourne isn't so great, but having only spent a couple of days there, that means nothing. Of course I would think Sydney is amazing, because I spent years there discovering all the cool places that take time to know. Similar to how I am with Brisbane now, I've really grown attached to this place since I made this video.

I moved from Townsville which is the capital of North Queensland; Brisbane is the capital of Queensland down south. It's a good first stepping stone from regional Australia to a capital city. It doesn't have the insane capicity like other cities but still gives the city learning. I love it in Brisbane :)

Yeah, I think where you come from to Brisbane really impacts your first impressions. But then, many move from the bigger Aussie cities to get away from the business, so I guess it's also what you're drawn to in a city/town as well. I do miss the busyness, but have learnt to appreciate the more laid-back vibe here.

I mean technically Brisbane is the capital of Queensland, no ifs or buts. I know that people from the north of Queensland would like to distance themselves from Brisbane at times, but the truth is North Queensland doesn't have the population base (yet) to sustain itself as a separate state from southern Queensland.

Actually a lot of musical talent has come out of Brisbane. Beyond Savage Garden, there's also Bernard Fanning and his band Powderfinger, there was Regurgitator and Rick Price back in the day, and the Bee Gees back in my parents' day (not born here, but they started their musical career here, I think), then there's Kate Miller-Heidke who was (I think) Australia's most recent Eurovision representative, recently there was Conrad Sewell and Sheppard, and the Veronicas are doing pretty well in the states. Keith Urban is from Caboolture, which is almost Brisbane. Then there's a heap of less mainstream ones...

Just a quick PSA to be clear, the Lamington was invented in Toowoomba, not Government House at the “Moreton Bay Settlement”. An improvised dessert, as Governor Lord Lamington was arriving at the Range Railway Crossing Engineer’s residence at Harlaxton House, which is several days travel atop the Great Dividing Range and supplies were scarce. Recent claims that Government House was responsible for the Lamington are patently false and likely fabricated to make Brisbane more interesting. Which it is not.

Brisbane changed (not for the better) in the 80s. Lots of seedy night life dissappeared from the valley and the "make money" people moved in around town mainly from Sydney. Sell 1 home down there, buy 3 up here to split into 6. Local footy fell off the media and it moved south, local sporting clubs closed or affiliated and the pokies moved in a few years later. Aerial ping pong (Aussie rules) became important to the imports. Lots of night music venues with live bands closed, the homestead stopped serving rum and coke in jugs, the theater dinner companies moved and closed shop. Brothers/Crushers sold their field at the grange and it bacame townhouses (don't know how, thought it was bequeathed to the council, didn't think they actually owned it). Huge areas just outside of the city became new suburbs and people stopped having a reason to go into town for leisure, they went to mega malls in the burbs. People stopped knowing their neighbours names.

Brisbane is definately distinctively Queensland. The diveristy between the East coast cities is insane. You'll find that Brisbane is essentially the same the the rest of the entire state. It's significantly more "bogan" or regional than the rest of the developed parts of the coast. This is 100% either a positive or negative dependant on who you are. Considering you spend time in alot of Chinese cities; Brisbane will seem alot less progressive and alot more outspoken to a degree. I think you will have already realised this considering it's been a year since you've posted the video. It just takes time to see what parts and especially who you're around to enjoy the city. AND finally, COFFEE; 7/11 has $3 large coffees and I find them to be better than most of the resturants in the city and suburbia. Also try seeing Eatons Hotel in Albany Creek, alot of good live music and beer gardens close to the ciy :)

@@BrisbaneChannel We're exploring this in our "source to sea" series - both publicly accessible places and some of the off-track areas around the river that are on private properties. The Brisbane Valley ia beautiful part of the world, close to the city and totally under-utilised for recreation.

Brisbane is fantastic it never rains much, weather is always good, it's always changing. If you wan't to experience boredom and be stuck in the past move to New Zealand.
@BrisbaneChannel
@BrisbaneChannel 4 жыл бұрын
The not raining much is part of the problem at the moment, as with most of Australia. We really need more of the stuff! I hear New Zealand is quite an expensive place to live, too? But at least it has some breathtaking scenery, although that doesn't help if you live there and there's nothing to do. I will check it out myself someday to see if it's as boring a place as you say! I still think any place can be un-boring if you explore with the intent on finding things you connect with.

@@BrisbaneChannel don't really share your enthusiasm to be honest. I couldn't care less about New Zealand and their so called scenery not everyone wants to waste time hiking and talking to deadbeat locals. who really wants to live in their sub standard housing in dump towns and cities on measly wages? Not sure how you could make New Zealand "unboring" but I do know the word "depressing" and the terms "soul destroying" "psychological pain" describe and sum up what New Zealand is. Don't miss it. Who would?

alot of money will make you think otherwise haha I like Brisbane especially the southern outskirts the hood 4114 where I visit my aunty n uncle and cousins. It's a modest place. I found the winter time pretty cold for what I was expecting the first winter I visited 🤣 especially Woodridge that place can get cold especially the mornings and nights 🤣 Brisbane is a solid city I like the outskirts more. Cool video.

Brisbane is a city that everyone leaves on a weekend for the Sunny or Goldie coasts. Brisbane on weekend days is mainly for tourists. QLDers are so conservative compared to the brash US style of Sydney siders, most like to follow the rules in Brisbane. I liken it to living in a public servant's office block.

Brisbane is boring. See: Brisbane is way more relaxed and chilled than Sydney and Melbourne and doesn't take itself as seriously as those cities either. Brisbane is also much less busy and congested and there are arguably more interesting things to do. :)

I'm with you most of the way. Yeah, definitely more relaxed and chill than Syd or Mel, doesn't take itself as seriously, yep. Less busy and congested, agreed. More interesting things to do, well, the jury's still out on that one...

@@BrisbaneChannel I agree I was probably being a bit bias with 'the more interesting things to do' point. I'm from Brisbane so I relate this a lot to my experiences living here. I've been to Sydney and Melbourne before but not enough to fully experience all of 'the interesting things to do' so to speak. I'm certain there would be tonnes of interesting things to do in any city, town or place you visit.

What makes any city boring? I lived in Brizzie in the 80s, loved it, but honestly, I can not say why. Perhaps because it was NOT Sydney or Melbourne. The locals more approachable and likable, down to earth, I don't know, getting around easier than a larger city, maybe, not the urban chaos that makes up Australia's two larger cities, definitely. At the end of the day, a city is what you make it. Many want their towns to become "global monsters" like Sydney, Melbourne, London or NYC, a word of advice, be careful what you wish for...
@BrisbaneChannel

I agree that a city is what you make it, but I think it's also about how a city aligns with your personality. I've appreciated Brisbane a lot more by changing myself to fit the city, rather than trying to make the city fit me.

Yeah, Brisbane has a lot going for it. You just need to be open minded and flexible in order to truly appreciate it. With coffee, there's also Death Before Decaf in the valley open 24 hours. But my issue is that you have to really search if you're gonna find a coffee after 3 or 4. Seems late afternoon or evening coffee just isn't part of Brisbane culture, so the cafes don't make enough to justify staying open longer.

Brisbane won't do well when comparing to other cities. My heart's still in Sydney. Haven't spent enough time in Melbourne to know if I connect with it or not. But I found that I appreciated Brisbane a lot more when I stopped comparing it with other cities, and started to really find the good in the place. Since then, I've found it a lot easier to live here.
