The bus platforms are temporary. When the old Myer Centre gets refurbished between 2024 - 2026, Target will move from the basement into the former Myer space. This will see the old Target space be turned into a new coach station and an extension of the existing bus station, with a pedestrian corridor linking up to Albert Street station for Cross River Rail and the old bus tunnel between Queen st and King George square will become another pedestrian corridor that will link to Brisbane Metro at King George Square. This means that although the bus terminal won’t be in Roma Street, it will be better integrated with the CBD which is where most people need to go. Also part of the former Myer space on Ground level is being used for displaced Restaurants from Eagle Street such as the Bavarian, as well as millanos who were displaced from the Centre of Queen Street mall.

That's interesting! Good to see the old Myer centre being put to good use in the future, and great to hear that there will be a connection with Albert Street station too. I wonder if coaches will still stop at Roma Street on their way to this new terminal. I saw some Brisbane Metro hoardings in the CBD, so it seems like there is quite a lot of new construction involved with this project.

@@TransportVlog I think some Coaches may still head into Roma for connections to regional trains, but overtime more will go into Queen Street. In addition to Target moving into part of the former MYER space, means that the old Target space can be reused as coach platforms. In addition, Brisbane Metro will also see a reduction of local buses into the bus station, so those will also be included as part of the new coach station. In addition, they want to reconstruct the Queen Street mall to allow better access to the Queens Wharf and nearby Public Transport and Active Transport facilities.

Hi Paul, great video. Are you currently up in Brisbane? If so, Phil is also up there. You may actually find him while traveling around there. Brisbane has changed completely since I was here with my dad back in august 1973. We actually stayed at the former Canberra Hotel, when we were in Brisbane. No electric trains running there when we were in Brisbane, only diesels. Also, the South Brisbane trains were separated from the Roma Street trains and a bus was needed to get from one area to the other. Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.

Hi Rob, I'm back in Sydney, but I was there at the same time as Phil, as I also saw Riverfire. It must have been so different back in 1973! It was before the Merivale railway Bridge too, which would explain the separation for trains at South Brisbane.

As a recent Brisbanite I really enjoyed this. I didn't know the fact about the street names, and I do think that Brisbane has the potential to be the best-organised of Australia's transport systems. I think they could do a lot more to make use of transit with development around stations, and better connections (as Sydney has done so well).

Thanks Paul, worth the wait! Really disappointing how little there appears to have been into ease of transfer. Even Roma Street could function better with direct access perhaps by an underground concourse beneath the existing platforms. However seeing as there appear to be huge issues relating to allocation of the extra capacity, this might be the least of concerns.
@TransportVlog

You're very welcome. Glad it was worth the wait! Both Roma Street and Boggo Road had better interchange facilities in the original plans, but unfortunately, these were scaled back to what we have now. A very well made video, Paul! In my opinion, Brisbane has made a MAJOR error in not having guided buses that would be five sections instead of only three. Really only a simple double articulated electric bus. . . . . that tries to look like an LRT, with hidden wheels.
@TransportVlog
@TransportVlog 11 ай бұрын
Thanks John, glad you enjoyed it. Yes, the busway network capacity is limited by it not being guided. The only way to increase capacity beyond the 3 section "metro" vehicles is to have more buses, which means more drivers, so economies of scale are quite small.
@johncoyle777
@johncoyle777 11 ай бұрын
@@TransportVlog Two things should have been done. ONE rebuild the bus way stations with much larger platforms. TWO have five section guided buses instead of the simple double articulated bus which Brisbane is now LOCKED INTO! No more drivers would be needed. These days guided bus systems are WAY in advance of the technology used on the Adelaide O-BAHN, for example. Why are double articulated buses NOT already in use in Adelaide? I saw double articulated DOUBLE DECK buses in Canada in 1980. You trad THAT right! For fun GOOGLE double articulated buses and see that there are a good number in use. Meanwhile in Brisbane they are HYPING UP that concept.

I really, really wish they'd rename Park Road Station to Boggo Road Station. It would save so much confusion. There's a prominent Park Road in Milton on the other side of the river, which causes confusion, and there is no association between the station's location and Park Road.

Yes, there was a (mainly) goods rail line and yard in Woolloongabba, on the very site where the Cross River Rail station is being built. It came off the main line just north of Dutton Park and followed Dibley Street up to Ipswich Road, which it then crossed just south of Wilton Street. It then ran up towards the Gabba as far as Logan Road, then turned left along the top of what is today Jurgens Street, ran along Stanley Street and crossed right through the middle of the Gabba Fiveways to the yard. Past the yard, the line continued up towards the river to the old Coal Wharves (today beneath the Captain Cook Bridge), skirted around the South Brisbane Dry Dock (now the Maritime Museum) and into the old South Brisbane Wharves. Despite being relatively close to the main line with South Bank (then Vulture Street) and South Brisbane Stations, the wharves line didn't connect to it.
