As a Victorian who grew up on Australian Rules Football, I didn’t know Rigby League or Rugby Union till the late 1990s when I relocated to NSW for work. Watching this film has given me a much valuable and valued education into not only Rugby League but also Queensland style Rigby League. Wally Lewis is a true and absolute Australian sporting hero of the likes of Allan Border (Cricket) and Ron Barassi (Australian Rules Football). All three exemplified a relentless pursuit, desire and effort for success that is outstanding and without genuine equal in Australian sport. Thank you so very much for this film.

I'm with you mate i grew up in SA playing footy as a kid until i played union and afl for a while then fully crossed over to the dark side. Moved to Queensland and the only Aussie rules matches i watch these days are about 10 minutes of a showdown and the gf. Games gone a bit weird now...... the fact i can't call it footy now tells all.

Thank you so much. As a hardcore proud blues fan I was oblivious to the talent up north and never gave them the respect they truely deserve.. Turned my nose and was wok eyed to Lewis talent. Thought he was over rated and to be crowned king I use to laugh. 40 years later this video has truely impressed me and made me realise how stupid I was as a kid. What a amazing competition and talent the Brisbane boys had. Tough men up there. Tough, gritty, scrapy, fast, ball movement, rugged defence and tough runs. Mel meninga what an absolute star. A gentlemen off the field in his interveiws and a killer on the field. What a special player he was, what a honour it was to witness him play in real life. A real superstar. This doco was amazing. I loved the old Lang Park before the upgrade. I was at the first State of Origin match in 1980 with my father and my brothers. We were on the fence, under the Craven Filter Stand. When the Queensland team ran on the field, the banging on the steel advertising signs inside the fence and the echo of the crowd off the tin roof of the grandstand was the loudest noise I have ever heard in a stadium - like a gunshot. I miss the old Lang Park time on-time off hooter too. That noise was iconic. Thanks for posting this video. I grew up on this football, and it brought back so many great memories.

great doco Dan, best brl doc on youtube, congratulation on this, very well done. I the same grew up with the BRL. Was a great era in brisbane and qld rugby league. During my 30's and 40's was when I started talking about the brl to the uninitiated [mostly southerners] who knew very little to nothing about the football here during that time. I was lucky enough to get hold of 2 grand finals in full from craig farrugia who played for wynnum. 1984 / 86. It was amazing to be able to watch those games again. Later, i started looking for footage of more games on you tube. I also went around to what clubs where still operating. Brothers and valleys where gone by then. This Sunday I 'm off to see my beloved seagulls do battle against Burley in the GF at Dolphin oval. It was good to read an article about Wally and Geno having a half hour talk to their fellow seagulls in August this year. Hopefully this will inspire the boys to victory. Go the seagulls

The national comp should have been between the best of the BRL and the Best of the NSWRL. A champions League style format.

The BRL sides would've been smashed. That's why they had to send combined teams from the BRL to play club sides in the NSWRL. The standard of football in the BRL was so low that the likes of Lewis only played 6 tough games of a year, Interstate and tests. Hence he was able to play until he looked like a corpse.

If you look at the photo of that game 2 1987 SOO in the SCG mud their is shot of Lewis, Vautin, Langer and Colin Scott in that shot if you look at it closely and long enough you see a very spiting image of Greg Inglis in Colin Scott.

Fantastic watching this compilation. Would love to see the 90's Brisbane footy and some of the country state league teams. I played in the Wide Bay area and we had 3 players from our club at one stage in the team, they loved the opportuity to play against the like of the great Wynnum Manly and Souths sides, got flogged but what an opportunity!

The BRL was always seen as a 2nd tier 'feeder' league to the NSWRL. That's how it seemed in England. We'd heard of the Brisbane comp but we never got to see it, The NSWRL Winfield Cup was available to rent a week behind at video hire shops. We knew that the BRL comp must have been pretty good by the number of players they had in the Aussie touring teams of the 70's and 80's.

Great video really enjoyed that!! As a kid watching Halifax in the 80s we signed the likes of Joe Kilroy(out of this world player!!) Grant Rix, Cavill Heugh in the off season. We also had Ross Strudwick as coach (the less said about him the better!!) Its a pity Broncos came along and drained the Brisbane league. Money talks I suppose.

Maybe,but some NSW people were following the Bris league even with the little coverage south of the border it received.I was a teenager in the 80's and even had several posters of the Bris stars on my wall with my NSW stuff.I liked Langer whilst he was at Ipswich but hated him in Origin and at Broncos.The QLD/Bris leagues suffered because of the Broncos.Anyone who doubts the Broncos involvement in diluting the comp only needs to look at clubs like Toowoomba Clydesdales and Norths Devils and the damage done,Norths were victims of Broncos and Storm who took their best talents.These clubs were destroyed.The comments by David Wright at @1 hr 41 mins are prophetic. As a NSW born boy,I wanted to see both comps play each other in one comp but it was never to be.I moved to QLD in the early 90's and have been lucky enough to see several future stars in local RL games over the decades.I do enjoy watching the Interstate Championship but might be biased as a Newtown Jets boy. Great doco Dan!!! I very much enjoyed this walk back through time when the BRL really meant something to the people of Brisbane before the Broncos came along. I also enjoyed seeing you use bits and pieces from some of my books and videos from my BRLFinal youtube channel as well as the dramatic background music which added to the sense of drama. If you ever hear about anyone who might have a copy of the 1987 State League Final between Wynnum and Redcliffe please let me know. Missing that to complete my collection. One suggestion I would add is to re-edit the few clips that have been stretched from 4:3 (original aspect) to 16:9. VLC will allow you to change the aspect and you could use a video capture program such as Replay to capture the video in the 4:3 aspect which looks better.

Dan what I would really love to see is a someone do a video documentary that is a sequel to Greg Mallory's book "Voices from Brisbane Rugby League". His book covers interviews with guys from the 50's to the early 70's. I'd like to see a doco that has interviews with the top guys from the 70's and 80's and answers similar questions to those that was the framework of Greg's book interspersed with footage of them from the BRL. FYI, my current project I am working on is a book called SE QLD Rep Football which will have match reports of every Bulimba Cup game, every Amco to Panasonic Cup game involving Qld teams, City - Country reports and reports from games against touring teams involving Brisbane, Toowoomba, Ipswich and the Gold Coast.

Besides local Queenslanders its only the visiting International players and some Sydney players close to retirement who showed respect for the BRL/QRL in the 70's-87 but the best Quote I liked is from former NSW& Penrith Coach Ron Willie said Wynnum Manly would beat Parramatta 1983/Canterbury Bankstown 1984. For personally the 76/77 &90-92 West Panthers teams.but in the modern era glad to see QRL vs NSWRL winners play each other on Grand final day,long live the memory and spirit of those days of BRL/QRL the true spirit of QLD Rugby league and why Origin means so much to us.

Mate, I was there at the time seeing a lot of these games in person at the BRL grounds. The top players and teams of the BRL were just as good, and in some instances such as Wynumm Manly in 84 and Souths in 85 better than the Sydney teams...however it is fair to say overall the Sydney comp had a deeper pool of highly talented players and teams..this was mainly due to the fact the Sydney clubs had more money via Poker machine licences and Leagues clubs to spend on luring the top players, which actually included the poaching of many top BRL players. Another thing to note is, all but 2-4 players in the Queensland State Of Origin team from 1980-1984 were playing in the BRL comp and Queensland won every single one of those years and the top players in those QLD Origin teams were all BRL players.

I watched the Newton gf a few days ago. I know the NSW was supposed to be stronger, but watching the quality of the ball movement in these gfs from the BRL I’ve got to say I found the BRL stuff equal. To be honest the Newton GF was pretty average.

I think slot machines are bad… but they definitely gave the edge to the NSW clubs when it came to buying players from QLD, in turn making their league the more powerful of the two. If I’d had been an even playing field I wonder if the BRL would still exist as a top line comp. having said that I think we still needed. a national competition. Who knows how this would have evolved.

@@chrisr5499 I would say the heyday of the BRL was split between 2 eras...firstly the 70s probably had the greatest local support in terms of attendance and local media....but even despite many BRL players leaving Brisbane for Sydney post 1980, from 1980 to 87 saw the greatest merchandise sales and sponsorship as Queensland began having success in State of Origin from predominantly BRL based players like Wally Lewis, Mal Meninga and Gene Miles

Yeah, look back on the glory days because they are no more and they aint coming back. Brisbane rugby league now is second rate football played before a few family and friends in empty stadiums. Tragic. The demise of Brisbane club football is a case study in how to completely destroy the brand. Thank you Broncos, thank you NRL. You killed grass roots league.

Yes, it was tragic what happened to the Brisbane competition. As someone who regularly was at these games in the 80s, it was a huge part of our local sporting culture that was lost. The QLD cup and now Intrust Cup that still run, are top comps and I still enjoy going to those games, but yes it's not the same standard and atmosphere that's for sure.

Don't blame the Broncos for the fall of the BRL. The Broncos had to happen. The Bears were already in the AFL, the Bullets were selling out Boondall every week. Society was changing. The biggest problem for Brisbane clubs was a lack of money. No pokies meant meagre funds which led to no player depth and an ever weakening comp. The corrupt government of the time was the major issue facing clubs and eventually led to the decline of many.

Very good doco Dan. This is the stuff those south of the border need to see about Wally to fully appreciate why he is the King. I'm not sure why it was a surprise the Comb Brisbae team beat NSWRL's best club sides when near on the same team was dominating Origin every year. RIP Jacko.

Some delusional NSWelshman say Lewis played in a 2nd grade comp and his lack of grandfinal success with the Broncos was a clear indication. These Brisbane boys all of a sudden had to fly south every 2nd week after years of just travelling across town. Sydney teams at the time had less than a handful of out of town trips per year. This in itself took its toll. Reason why any grandfinal success the warriors have will be extra special the poor bastards.

NSWelshman are delusional about RL. The difference was the money was in Sydney. I don’t think QLD had pokies until 1994. NSW had 40 years on QLD in this regard.
