Ten News story on Brisbane subcultures from 1988. From VHS tape.

Music in this video is the 45rpm 7" single "What's Going On" by The Funaddicts (1988). The B side was "Mandela" and it was the 5th single released by the Brisbane independent label "Bent Records" (funded and managed by Doug Hutson & Andy Crosbie).

As I recall, Backstage was largely an enjoyable experience. The Rude Boys & Girls would do their kooky little dances when the relevant tunes were being played, then J&MC would come on and they'd vacate to be replaced by a few square miles of blue black hair, and some of us who didn't exactly fit into goth or swampie would go nuts for Pixies...as I still do. I do remember a couple of occasions when the skins would come in all amped up, but the only real trouble was up on St Paul's Tce one night between skins and a group of indigenous guys. My memory of it is fuzzy, but even if it weren't, I'm quite sure we didn't stick around to see it unfold.

theres a rlly cool subscene in brisbane now aswell, a few ones like project punk and anti dismal, very cool and lots of local gigs and bands

It’s 1988. The news report mentions World Expo, which took place in Brisbane in 1988.

Which one are you? I can tell you the club is Hollywoods, downstairs on Elizabeth St, and also the Jesus and Mary Chain at Easts Leagues Club.

OMG just got sent this, and I was one of the Swampie Goth gals in BrisVegas in 1988 (& I worked the 6mths at Expo 88 looking full on Swampie Goth too!), but yeah, HER hairstyle & your comment is hilarious 🧛🏻‍♀️😂

Heidi is the stunning blonde girl.. Karee (or Carie) is the beautiful black haired Goth girl with the gorgeous Rosemary the red haired Goth girl - I know because I totally lived in the alternative scene in BrisVegas & knew those girls in the 1980s/1990s 🧛🏻‍♀️👩🏻‍🎤
