Been a few years as I now live in Malaysia. I miss Ashton Gate, as a kid I used to stand either in the East End or the Park (Open) End - My last game was back in 2008. But thanks to the Internet I can keep up to date. My first game I was 11, City had just been promoted into the (real) First Division, The week before City had beaten Arsenal 0-1 and so this was the first home game in the top flight. Local Coach Driver Joe Loud, got me and a load of mates who had never been to a game before to come along (We lived in Banwell) (his Son was our school friend) and that first time in the East End, I became a fan, we used to go to all the home games and a few of the away ones, I can always remember getting off the coach in Banwell and going to the news agents and picking up a copy of the Green 'Un to read a review of the game on the game as I walked home. How the hell did they do that? Anyway, great memories

Many of the best memories I have are of the times I spent watching City home and away from the mid 70's to mid 90's. I'm across 'The Pond' now, living in Colorado, so not been to Ashton Gate for many many years. My sisters boyfriend first took me to watch matches from the Grandstand. My first 'solo' visit was in the East End against West Ham. A lively start! From then on I was hooked. From the East End to the Grandstand enclosure to the old open end to Dolman block B. Such a shame to hear that the Ship & Castle, Wedlocks and other major parts of that past are now gone. But, the memories remain.

My first time at a football match 1970 something I was around 9 years old city v Leeds as I travelled by bus then train from bath it was amazing day for a nine year old, still remember little bits today

Fantastic to see the old photos. My Dad started taking me to Ashton Gate in the early 60's, and we used to stand in front of the old wooden stand where the Dolman Stand now is. I stood at the railings by the pitch, my Dad behind me on the terrace. The bus drivers used to sit on a bench just in front (pitch-side) of the railings I remember that old stand before it was torn down so it was just a terrace for a few years afterwards, before they built the Dolman in the late 60's? I remember that old toilet block you can see at 59 seconds, and I remember playing at half-time in a builders sand pit left at the back of that terrace (about 44 seconds) where that old wooden stand was. I was only a small kid, maybe 5,6 or 7. There's a photo there I might be in at 47 seconds, beneath the 'Georges Bristol Beers' signage. There are several games I recall. One for John Atyeo, maybe his last game or his testimonial, and a special game when they switched on new floodlights. We moved away from Bristol in 1967 when I was 11. I was away from Bristol through the 70's and only returned in the 80's

Really miss those floodlight pylons. Walking up to the gate as a kid on a cold tuesday night and seeing them lit up was mental.

Nice to see all these pictures from down the years. I was born 1 week before promotion in 1955. I was taken to home games as a toddler in the late 50s onwards & vaguely remember the 11-0 FA Cup win v Chichester in 1960. I remember promotion in 1965, Big John;s final game in 1966 v Ipswich & his testimonial v Leeds, as well as so much else since, including promotion in 1976.. And yes, the background music is not to my taste, but thanks for the pictures!

I absolutley love the pic at 2.14... this was exactly my first view of ashton gate when i was about 9... i remember we beat Brighton 5-2 (i think) and from that day i was in love with this club!

I went to the Gate for the first time in the early 50's with my dad. I was about seven or eight at the time. I remember it was a reserve match & we won. I also remember there were over 3000 people there to watch it. Can you imagine that, just for a reserve game? Great days, although I think probably a new stadium is a must. If Ashton Vale is finally turned down, if I was Lansdown, I let the travellers camp on it instead. That would sort out the antis who live there. Town green my arse.
