That's not Northern Soul, that's just people who haven't got a clue just giggling around to something they'd refer to as Motown. Call me 'Elitist' and wish you would but Northern comes with traditions and not those that are associated with 'Club Land', I'm talking about drinks on the dance floor for example. Let's be honest. it's just a lot of 'Hand baggers' listening to something that's new to them. It'll be a flavour of the month until the 'Next best thing' comes along! I'm all in favour of new blood because the scene requires it if it's to survive, but we should all respect the traditions of the Northern Soul dance floor. I'll admit I didn't go to this event. I travelled all the way to Bristol to attend a niter at the Fiddler's Arms and I wasn't impressed. I'm used to being surrounded by like minded people, soul events in Bristol always seem to fall on it's arse which is a pity because the city has such a rich tradition. I'm talking about the Yate all nighters! Keep the faith

thanks for you judgement. how do you expect lot of new young people to know all about tradition. they will get into that if you allow them to feel it for themselves rather than patronising and judging. some of these young people have showed a real strong interest in Northern Soul, be kind to them. We are fully aware of Northern Soul tradition, Ive probably been on the scene as long as you. The buzz we achieved in the first 2 sell out nights is as close to the old days as it ever was. Come and join us... you can come and dance on the stage and show them how to do it.

Traditions of the Northern Soul dance Floor - what on earth is that ? I’ve heard some things over many years , but that sounds just a tad precious ! All I see in this and the many other videos posted under this banner , is a group of young people enjoying the music; the Vibes it’s giving ; and all having a great time 👍If anything respecting the traditions you seem so preciously quoting to us all ! Instead of leaving the Northern scene as some “preservation society “ for the chosen ones who’ve taken some oath , the people and DJs here enjoying this great track from those great traditions ,are throwing the sounds open to be appreciated- however you want to enjoy it - I know whose keepin the faith !

Wow bitter , I love northern soul but dancing is about having fun as well surely . I am just so pleased to see this happening in Bristol people of all ages enjoying fantastic music and dancing admittedly my eye would be on the northern soulers if I was ever actually to go. But any dancing is great .

Ok please help me out here.. Having been raised by a Black American father and collecting Black American music for almost 40 years I never understood the nature of ‘Northern Soul’ à la UK?! I mean of course I know about how it became popular with white working class youth as a form of escapism, however it also appeared to be exclusionary in the sense that here (as opposed to in the US) it was seen as a mostly white scene? (Bizarre given y’all dancin to Soul music?). Matter of fact I recall there not being many my peoples at all? One dude even called me the N* word at a gig in 79?! (ain’t that some sh*t?!). I guess what I’m trying to say is that while y’all debating authenticity and introducing the scene to a new generation it would also be correct to rectify some of the ills of the past and promote greater diversity as opposed to trying to recreate the scene ‘as was’. There I said it.. my two cents. Peace ✌🏽

We are glad you raised this - and we are able to re-iterate how we feel. We are not recreating or reviving the past.... we are making it different....
