If you define “jungle” as “tropical rainforest” then the US does have ‘jungle’ in both Hawaiʻi and in the territories (ie El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico is probably the largest).

Fun fact, the British never owned Hawaii. The King of Hawaii at the time just really liked how the Union Jack symbol looked and just kinda stole it.

I’m a non-Hawaiian but I don’t understand why they don’t come up with a new flag 😅 They could easily come up with something beautiful that pays homage to Native Hawaiian art and culture, but instead they hang onto a flag with a meaningless Union Jack in the corner

There was also a substantial friendly relationship between Hawaii and England at that time. They were doing, like, trade and stuff.

@@jonadabtheunsightly Well ok, but is that really so relevant and important still? Again, the flag has zero representation of Hawaiian culture or of Hawaii’s natural beauty… This is a state that is extremely proud of these things, by the way Is commemorating a few trade deals with the UK 100 some years ago really more important?

@@coyotelong4349 At this point, the state flag is what it is because that what it has always been. In order to change it, they'd have to get a lot of people to agree on *what* to change it to. The status quo has an advantage over other designs and is sort of a default choice. At least the Hawaii state flag is distinctive and easily recognizable. Have you noticed how many flags are a dark blue field with some stupid "state seal" in the middle that's far too visually complex to be recognizable at typical flag-viewing distances?

@@jonadabtheunsightly I agree about the boring state seal flags But I think it’s time the State of Hawaii had an actual effort to change the flag. It’s not unheard of; other states do it from time to time The state government asks for designs to be sent in, people send them in, the government brings it down to like 3 options they like, and then they put it to a vote on which one people like most

I think the most common thing people cross state lines to do legally, is buy fireworks. That's not the one you hear about all the time, but a *lot* of people do it. (This is partly because a lot of states have a weird rule where it's legal to buy and sell fireworks as long as the buyer promises to take them outside the state to use them; so stores that sell them tend to be along major highways and very close to state lines and advertised with huge billboards.) There are jungle areas on some of the less-populated islands in Hawaii. Nothing approaching the size of the jungles in Africa and South America, granted. We also don't have anything like the Dry Valleys, but no country does; that area is truly unique.

Wilbur Wright was the oldest and primary brain in the development of the first aircraft (Wright Flyer), but Orville made the first flight. Wilbur did do the second flight, which lasted much longer. Their experimentation was conducted off a dune on a barrier Island in present day Kill Devil Hills in North Carolina.

Oddly enough, since it was only the 2 of them and they didn't have any cameras with them until years later (leading to speculation that they lied and said they did it, but didn't actually do so, despite their extensive and publicly available journals and logs), Brazil likes to claim that Alberto Santos-Dumont is the actual inventor of powered flight since he had his 1st flight observed by other people in Europe in 1906.

Hello from Georgia. Yes, Atlanta has the busiest airport in the world and even yes to alligators crossing the street (even up here, but not as frequently as FL). Atlanta isn't quite North enough to get any debilitating snow (most years) and other than bad thunder/rain storms, we often never really see the eye of any hurricane/tornado so it really is in one of the best spots weather wise to be so busy.

Yes, there ARE things that are legal in one State, but illegal in another, like the legal drinking age, driving age, even possession of fireworks. Modern examples include abortion laws and marijuana laws. If you live in the southeast, you WILL see an alligator once-in-a-while. But they normally are very shy of humans. If you see them in their natural habitat (Everglades National Park in a canoe is a great example, which I have done), they may creep closer to you, but still, you are not part of their diet, and they will shy away.

SOOOOO....about the airports. Atlanta and Dallas are far enough south they see essentially no snow or freezing temperatures, so they have less obstacles than New York and Chicago. Denver being in the mountains is perpetually lost in winter land essentially. The summers do get warm but up high it stays snowy. The reasons for the high volume at these locations makes sense if you look deeper. 1) Denver Colorado: The Rockies is the most sought after attraction in the United States. Not oy is it the most massive mountain range you can find...it's got year round skiing, tons of resorts, and of course it's nearby suburb Vail is world renowned. 2) Dallas Ft Worth: Texas is big. In fact it's got 5 of the top 20 largest cities in America in it's own borders. Because of the amount of oil, cattle, and industry work there...travel is nearly constant just from professional sorts. Add in the fact that Texas is the biggest and most central hub for the American southwest it makes sense this would be a likely starting point for tourists looking to tour the state, the southwest, the grand canyon, etc. 3)Atlanta, Georgia. This is specifically because Atlanta happens to be relatively equidistant to the nations capitol and Florida's southern point. Case in point ...if your destination is anywhere in the southeast, Atlanta is your starting point. Given the massive amount of tourism into Florida for the keys, Disney world, the everglades etc ...Atlanta has often become the next best destination when seats all the way into Florida are sold out. In any event weather just delays us....unless it's a hurricane or severe blizzard we just keep on going.
@Subiwu

The weather doesn’t have much to do with why they’re busy. They are mainly popular stopover airports for connecting flights, domestic and international. Also KATL is a major hub for Delta, American for KDFW, and United for KDEN.

I live in Florida and want to talk about hurricanes. Lived 15 years in the 1970s and 1980s in Miami Beach. Only had one hurricane that caused damage to traffic lights and electric poles but not to homes. I now have lived 15 years in Central Florida as far from the water as you can get in a narrow state and have had at least one hurricane per year, some years two. I stay home during hurricanes. My neighborhood doesn't flood and electricity is underground so never lost electricity during hurricanes. It rains hard with very strong winds and for hours at a time but you can watch TV while this goes on. People who live in islands or at the beach or live in wooden houses or mobile homes suffer during hurricanes.

Adding to the music, Memphis and the Mississippi River Delta gave the world blues music, but they also shared soul music with the world and in connection with the UK created a new American category called Blue Eyed Soul, as well as creating Rock and Roll. Yes, we know the rock and roll Hall of Fame is in Cleveland, Ohio, that is another story. Between New Orleans, Memphis, St. Louis and Chicago you get a great combination of jazz, blues music, amazing food and extremely strong culture that most of the country rarely recognizes.

As I read it, Colombia refused to do business with Pres Theodore Roosevelt regarding leasing land for a canal in their rebellious province of Panama. The U.S. then backed the Panamanian secessionists, recognized Panama as an independent nation, and Panama agreed to lease the U.S. the land. They were just happy to gain their independence, but after a few decades, having their nation split in half by the hemispheric superpower got on their nerves.

Amazed how much Geography Now was able to cover so much in a limited time considering you have plenty of states that are bigger than many countries around the world. Very touching dedication imo and a good rough start to help those learn more about the USA. As for Paul’s background, I think his mother is South Korean. Also, to us the UK is not an underdog, nor do we see us as the big dog, we prefer to see the two countries equal with their own value and differences that end up pushing each other to be a better version of ourselves. To be honest, never understood how the Brits get flack as if we boss the UK around cause I tend to think that the UK is so close to us that their opinion tends to hold the most weight in certain foreign affairs. Does that mean we always listen? Perhaps not. Yet the Brits have a special place to had that chat without it feeling like it’s crossed a line, which is ironic considering the history of the country. I think that while there are some who play the bitter and resentful ness, the two countries faced so much together as separate countries it was united in fascination with each other while remember that our past also shares the common ties between each other that reignites the feeling of family. It’s understandable that the Brits have probably felt the influence from us, but the same can be said of how much we too have been inspired by the Brits. From cultural to even our justice system has those ties that goes back to the origins placed in the UK. We might be powerful, but we have moments when we look up to the Brits, we might not be a fan of some history but there’s so many positive attributes that the Brits have brought that have earned our respects. I think you should check out Geography Now’s UK video as it’s just as lengthy and perhaps it will give that detail of recognition that could explain more of why we Americans, and many around the world, are just as interested in your country, the culture and history it has. Further proving the point we’ve learned to appreciate and value the differences we have in this dear relationship the two countries have.

Other than that it is just very dry with cactuses and shrubs. Spring is when the landscape is the most beautiful because then a lot of flowers bloom. The value of the dollar is more complicated. In fact when a country's currency is commonly used elsewhere it would increase the value of.the dollar. However, especially in recent years the United States has deflated the value of the dollar through excess borrowing and inflation.

From Tampa Florida. I was taught how to run from alligators in elementary school. If you were out and about near water ways if you looked hard enough you could see them. They do cross roads periodically but not as often as you might think. They typically stay on shorelines to bask in the sun and are stealth predators when in the water. But you do see them.

3:26 About a decade ago, Chicago's O'Hare airport, the nation's busiest for decades, began a massive rebuilding and modernization. In response, people started booking flights to Chicago's second airport, Midway. Then the pandemic hit. Traffic patterns shifted. It won't be long before O'Hare regains the #1 title. But Chicago remains the transportation hub for the country.

Still very common for people in one state to go to another to do something that is legal. For example, I live in Indiana and marijuana can result in up to 3 years in prison for the possession of more than 30 grams. But I can go 180 miles to the north of me to the state of Michigan, and weed is perfectly legal.

Great video and great to see a younger perspective on the USA that is pretty positive for a change. Just one point where being native to a continent is discussed: The only people actually native to their continent are Africans because humans evolved in Africa. From there humans populated every other continent in the world whether is was 150, 10,000 or 40,000 years ago. In the truest sense, all humans are Africans. This evolutionary truth is different than the idea of what it means to be native in the minds of an American. In that sense, especially among earlier immigrants from post Revolutionary times and through the Ellis Island era (when 12 million people immigrated to the USA), you believe that you are a native if you were born here in the USA. That's the whole American idea in a nutshell. Your past does not matter as much as where you are going in the future and how you choose to invent yourself (whether you immigrated here or were born of anyone who ever immigrated here). I suspect that in 2023, immigrants may feel the same way as those who came through Ellis Island or to the fledgling country back in 1776.

I hear a lot of comments on these videos about the US states being compared to being separate countries and since the narrative is basically the same on all the channels, I'm guessing one person said it and everyone else repeated it as truth. In fact, this comparison could not be further from the truth. Even Texas, which probably has the strongest state identity in the union, is one of the champions of maintaining the American way of life. States definitely have their own identities and there are regions of the USA ( the Northeast, the South, the Midwest, the Great Plains, the Southwest, the Pacific Northwest, Alaska and Hawaii) that have cultural identities as well, but these cultural differences pale in comparison to those that exist in other countries. We are all Americans and think of ourselves as such before we think of our states (Texas is the only state that might be an exception and possibly native populations; especially in Hawaii and Alaska). E Pluribus Unum or "Out of many, one" is the glue that held the Union together, especially since the end of the Civil War. In fact, if this were to reverse itself it would likely result in Balkanization and the end of the United States.

the US started with the thirteen colonies along the East coast. Overtime, the US government kept expanding westward. The great plains which take up the bulk of the midwest(pretty much middle USA) had little to offer other than farmland due to the constant tornadoes happening there. This was also territory of nomadic native American tribes. Over time though, the west was conquered. The period known as the "wild west" was named that solely because the land was unconquered and there were bandits aplenty. The romanticization of the wild west happened in the late 19th century when they put wild outlaws and their stories into the limelight. By the early 20th century, the wild west had pretty much been conquered. Nowadays though the romanticization of that period has been replaced by more contemporary works that establish that the wild west was tamed with blood and iron and that it was inherently genocidal towards the Native Americans. My particular favorite is "Blood Meridian" by Cormac McCarthy. I drank a lot of caffeine I'm all loopy

Most Americans need cars to commute to and from work and just to get around. If you don’t live in a big city there’s no where you can walk to. I’m unusual. I live in Philadelphia and I don’t drive and either walk or take public transportation or if I really need it Lyft or Uber. Philadelphia is a colonial city so parts of it is very walkable.

Go from Sweden to Greece, you don't need a passport and no one will ask you for any type of ID... I still brought a passport. As long as you're traveling within schengen you don't need one.

Florida man and history teacher here. You can run into alligators all the time, if you’re in their habitat. They usually don’t wander much into cities, but can live in lakes and ponds within cities quite easily. The issue is people feeding them and getting them used to human interaction. But yeah, can be pretty normal to see a 10-15 foot prehistoric lizard king crossing the street.
