Aside from the expense of extended vacations, they can be very stressful. Many vacationing Americans drive to their destination, so there's traffic stress. There's also packing all the right stuff, putting a hold on your mail and other deliveries, finding someone to keep an eye on the house, feed pets, care for the yard, and etc. Many of us find it much more relaxing to just take a few consecutive days, bumped-up against our regular days off, and spend them at home...relaxing.

I have lived up north when a periodic brood emerged and it was insane. Also, if you live in an annual cicada zone you have these giant wasps called cicada killers that paralyze and bury cicadas in holes for their larvae to feed on. Never saw them up north in periodic cicada territory. BTW, these are very big wasps, they can carry a cicada. They actually can't take flight while holding one. They carry the cicada up a tree and then fly a few hundred feet until they hit the ground, climb another tree and repeat until they get back to their burrows.

As a little girl growing up in the more arid areas of west Texas, I loved hearing their calls during the summer. I have always had an affinity for studying insects, likely it began with "locusts", as we called cicadas then. They were easy to handle, sitting calmly on your finger or palm as you studied every detail of the large head, obvious eyes, tiny clawed feet (yes, 6 of them), and best of all - the tiniest sparkling red jewel inset right in the middle of the forehead. I never minded if one crawled up my arm or on my blouse, but I drew the line at having one get on my hair or neck. None of the chums I had, boys or girls, were prone to kill cicadas or any other living things so far as I knew. I had an even disposition but any sort of cruelty would end a friendship quickly. Catch & release was definitely our method. Interesting info, Luka!

There are other cicadas that come out every year across the country, including the areas showing the broods on the map. The difference is the ones on the map are the crazy periodic cicadas that only come out from the ground once every 17 years, and when they do, there are so many it's insanity. These cicadas have literally been alive in an immature form underground for 17 years, and this is one of the years they reach adulthood to basically mate, lay eggs and start the next generation, which will then emerge in another 17 years. I think there are also some 13 year cicadas and some 7 year ones, but it's just so weird that an insect would live that long to only spend a short period of time in adulthood and leave their molted exoskeletons everywhere.

The Hawaii-Emperor seamount chain is a direct result of the Hawaii Hot Spot, or mantel plume that continues to build Hawaii by way of basaltic volcanoes. The chain illustrates the movement of the Pacific tectonic plate over the past 80 million years or so as it moved across the hot spot. Notice the sharp turn in the middle of the chain. The Pacific plate made a sharp turn towards the West-North-West about 50 million years ago. The chain is older than what we can currently see as the seamounts that were created more than 80 million years ago have now been subducted underneath Asia into the mantel. No one knows when the Hawaii hot spot started, and we will likely never know as at least some of it's history is now erased by that subduction.

I see a big shift in vacation usage. My dad didn't take vacation often until we kids were older. and he would take 2 or 3 weeks off work in the summer when we were off school. but he never took a sick day. I think he took maybe 5 sick days in his whole career and I'm sure 2 or 3 of those days were spent taking care of one of us when we were very sick. My dad had so much sick time that he could have taken a whole year off work. But, I notice people of my generation are actually using their vacation time. Some save it because only a certain amount of time rolls over for you to use in the next year and any hours over that you get paid for. So say you have 120 hours of vacation, 80 rolls over for next year and the 40 leftover would just show up on your check, like a bonus. It's quite common for people to do this because the fiscal year in my company is February and it's nice to get an extra large check right at tax season. I used to do this but I'm come to value my mental health over money. I earn 1 hour of vacation time for every 8 hours I work so I basically earn a day of vacation for every 2 weeks. (10 days) of work. So I started taking a 4 day weekend once a month.

As an American, just about everyone I know takes a vacation. I don't take long vacations instead I take mini vacations all thoughout the year. Maybe a four day weekend and drive to the beach or fly to Las Vegas for 3 days. I also think Americans work alot because they want to be able to do all these extra things without worrying about their bills.

Yeah, Tagalog is the Philippines. People in Thailand speak...well...Thai. Also, being in CA, I'm actually surprised me that our largest Asian group is Chinese. Maybe it's just my area of the state, but I thought it would be Vietnamese. There are a LOT of Vietnamese people in my area. (I live kinda halfway between SF and San Jose.) I know, I know, there's Chinatowns in both SF and LA, but I figured many had spread out over the country and didn't stay forever here in CA.

Actually, it was Washington and Colorado that fully legalized pot for recreational use, then I think Vermont and then California.

People in the US see not taking breaks as honorable because we value hard work and labor.

No cicadas! I have a pathological fear of them! They came out when I visited Chicago when I was 6 or 7 and you know how everything looks larger when you’re a little kid. They look giant and had huge red eyes and there were millions of them! They made horrible noises and left there carcasses all over the ground. You literally couldn’t walk without stepping on one! I cried for weeks afterwards I was so traumatized. I thought it would be ok because they would be gone. Then the next year, we were driving through Kentucky and they were there :( :( :(

I’m surprised he talked about the underwater mountains in Hawai’i...but he didn’t mention Mauna Kea, which is 13,803 ft above sea level, and it gets snowfall every January/February. well that mountain doesn’t start at sea level...the actual mountain base is on the floor of the ocean. If you measure it from the ocean floor, to its apex, Mauna Kea’s total height is 33,500 ft., thousand of feet taller than Mount Everest. oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/highestpoint.html

cicadas are not dnagerous. as a kid you would find cicada shells on trees and sometimes a newly hatched one. you can pick them up gently but their legs are prickly and feel weird.
