I am surprised about how good your pronunciation is! I heard Brits or Americans who already spent one or two years as expats in Germany and their pronunciation was worse than what I heard from you here. And it is nice to see how much of the stuff you learned back then in school was "archived" somewhere in your brain. If you will keep in mind that a "V" in German ist very often pronunced like "F" (e.g. 4 doesn't sound like vier but like "fear") you were close to perfect :)

Here in the South (Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria) it is very common to use "Tschau" (Pronounced like Chow) which is a germanized version of the italian "Ciao" but is only used to say "goodbye" whereas italians use it to say hello too. It is also very common to hear "passt schon" (or bassd schon) instead of "Kein Problem" which kind of means something like "don't worry about it" or "it's allright" but literally translates to "it'll fit"

@berlindude75 Жыл бұрын
For the higher numbers up to 20 you still see the common Germanic origin of both German and English (cf. "teen-ager"): 11 = elf = eleven, 12 = zwölf = twelve, 13 = drei-zehn = thir-teen, 14 = vier-zehn = four-teen, 15 = fünf-zehn = fif-teen, 16 = sech-zehn = six-teen, 17 = sieb-zehn = seven-teen, 18 = acht-zehn = eigh-teen, 19 = neun-zehn = nine-teen, 20 = zwanzig = twenty This right-to-left order of reading the digits (between 13 and 19) continues in German up to 99 (21 = ein-und-zwanzig = "one-and-twenty", 99 = neun-und-neunzig = "nine-and-ninety"), while in modern English for such constructed numbers past 20 you switch entirely to reading the digits from left to right (21 = "zwanzig-eins" = twenty-one, 99 = "neunzig-neun" = ninety-nine).

to add something: In the morning: In the north you can also say "Moin" instead of "Guten Morgen" and in Switzerland it is a "Grüezi" In the evening: Everyone understands "Tschüss", but in the south ( Bavaria and Austria ) they tend to say "Servus".

You did increbibly WELL, no doubt about it! Especially when it's soooo long ago, that you've learned and used the most basic words/phrases in school and never used them again. And there is another very important thing that really should give you more confidence: the german and english languages share a hell of a lot, just remember that "english" is based on the german "Angeln" and "Sachsen", two german-based people who take over the british Island and formed what later became England. 😉 We have a LOT more in common than you might think! Dig a little deeper into the history of England and the U.K., you'll be surprised! 😉

Good pronounceation Dont worry about a little accent i belive accent is part of somebodys origin and charachter And yes indeed we lern a type of english in school thats........ lets cuts say verry localized Oxford Engliih Like oxford is this small university place in england and depending on your teacher it be more or less strict about how u pronounce the words exactly. While alsonironicly lot of teachers have a thick german accent them selves. Wich agsin i dont think is bad but maybe sub optimal for teaching😅. And the issue basicly is at least with a middle class or lower degree u dont lern a lot off filler words or double meaning words or slang and then u come out of school with 16 or 18 and u feel dumb and unsure about your english skill. At least this was true for me😅 While truth is my english teacher hatet me so she was extra harsh about my examen. Like oh this is not a british english term thats austrailian or this is amarican minus point.😅 As if people in real life care 😅

You know english is based on german? In the jear 450 the roman leave Britannia and the britisch people called german tribes to save them. German tribes Saxon and Angeln (Engeln) arrived and stay there. They build Kingdoms like Wessex, Sussex (Saxon), Mercia and more. Around 800 King Alfred kreate all Kingdoms to one, England (based on Engeln). The Anglo-Saxony (old english) is near the old saxon language. Here in north Germany, in lower Saxony, many people can speak the old saxony until today (Plattdeutsch).
