16:25 it's salt water. salt water is a preservative. which is why fishing towns have been using wood docks for centuries. It needs upkeep now and then like every man made thing, but wood does quite well with salt water. You can even still find wrecks from the old days of wood sailing ships still at least partially intact.

There is a road near me that has a railroad crossing, it's such a steep incline to go up over the tracks that the road is all scratched up. There are signs everywhere saying no trucks, but people who aren't familiar with the area still get on the road. Its a very small 2 lane road with nowhere to turn around, so once they are on it they don't have much of a choice but to take their chances crossing the tracks. A few months ago a truck got stuck and was hit by a train, a bystander called 911 and saw the collision. She gave an amazing recount of events, she was a natural storyteller...I felt like I had been standing right next to her watching it all happen. Thankfully nobody was injured...just lots and lots of damage.
@americansmark
@americansmark 2 жыл бұрын
I know the guy in that train video. His landing gear got stuck because his tandems weren't all the way up due to the local bridge axle weight restrictions. In plain English: our trailer axles slide forward and back for different loads so we can always have a balanced load and make tighter turns. His wet further back to be legal but it meant the middle of his trailer and thus his landing gear (the trailer legs) we're sitting lower than the tracks when he got halfway across. He probably bounced and got wedged in that time despite crossing the same road dozens of times before. I got stuck on a road making a turn. Landing gear grounded out on a tightly baked state route and I had the entirety 9f my trailer's weight resting in the drive tires and couldn't move. Took our tow truck an hour to get me unstuck while the highway patrolman laughed his butt off at the bad luck. As for the county fixing it: they can't. The tracks are owned by a rail network and they refuse to do anything. Same reason why our local rail truss is 11' tall on a us route. There's no other way around and the rail industry refuses to upgrade cuz they're greedy bastards.

Really, it would turn into a battle of "we both need to join together to fix this, so who's going to pay? I'm not paying to fix it." because it really would take lowering the tracks and leveling out the road in order to truly fix it. Or, you can do the cheap option and put up no truck signs and fine any truck that goes on that road

The problem with wind turbines is if their brakes or gearboxes malfunction they can spin out of control, overheat and ignite. Because they’re mostly made from fibreglass and other flammable materials, the fire can spread rapidly and burn out of control very quickly

Fixing a railroad crossing can be an enormous boondoggle. The railroad is responsible for the upkeep, & they are very very lax about that. My hometown not only threatened to sue the railroad for dangerous crossings, the city actually started filing the paperwork before the railroad took the threat seriously. The rebuilt crossings were fantastic.

That is a female elephant attacking. Elephants form gender specific herds. males travel with males, females travel with females. they only get together when a female goes into her breeding cycle. The only males traveling with a female herd will be very young ones still needing mother's care. More than likely that is the matriarch of that herd. The guy narrating didn't know much about elephants. Still a great clip though! Honestly it's probably better she lost her tusk. it might make her safer from poachers!

One of the most craziest moment I've seen is a tiger chasing a couple of guys on a dirtbike. It was insane how fast the cat was chasing them!! Poor tiger must've been absolutely starving at that point. I'm sure the bridge WAS secure. People forget how much water can lift. Water can carry cars at just two feet depth. Why doesn't the county put in measures? Because they're rich fucks who think a simple cheap sign can deter people and stop the damages. I believe his deck would be covered by the insurance, as long as its stated. I agree! A concrete deck is ideal!

In North America, it is the rail companies responsibility to maintain the part of the crossing that is on the rail easement. This results in conflicts with the city/municipality/state responsible for the rest of the crossing. As a result many crossings are built at too steep an incline, in order to meet the level of the existing roadway at the point where it enters the easement. This has been a problem for truckers ever since there were trucks to get stuck on them. They are usually well signed with warnings that trucks should not use them, but ... In any event, this sort of thing happens way more often than it should.

The wood used decking near water is pressure treated. This wood should last years even near the water. Metal decking would rust, and concrete decking, while good, is known for cracking. The local building codes will dictate what you must do or have in order to build a deck in your area. As for insurance, your policy will tell you what is covered or not.

Actually most elephants that are caught in the wild by wildlife rangers have their tusks sawed off to prevent poaching. It’s a good way of making sure elephant ivory isn’t traded anymore. It however excludes antique ivory as it has to a certain age to be considered legal. Artificial aging can’t be done as you can tell with a quick look as ivory that looks old is soaked in tea, coffee, or oxidizer which isn’t that even and leaves patches of white. Real age can show as ivory ages it turns yellow then brown or stays white depending on where it’s being stored as it’s still considered teeth. The explorer’s club has an old skull of a four tusk elephant as it’s only type because it’s a rare genetic mutation that gave it 4 tusks

Whether that deck is covered by insurance depends on how the policy was written. I'd expect that a policy covering wave damage to a building right next to the ocean would have very high premiums (if an insurance company was willing to write such a policy at all).

That was a female elephant, most likely the matriarch of the herd. She was protecting her herd and the babies. Males leave the herd at about 13 years old and go off to roam with other males. Tusks are used to strip bark off of trees and other such things. In the males, they are used for fighting also. If her tusk broke below the skin, she might not survive without medical attention and even then, infections are common. It is a national park so there are probably medical crews who can tend to the elephants. The calf shown was very young so that might have been what provoked the attack.

The clip of the train vs truck could have been a lot worse. Case in point, several years ago there was a train vs truck wreck at Mer Rouge, Louisiana on the same rail line that goes through my hometown in southeast Arkansas. The truck was hauling a low boy trailer with a large crane on it and it got stuck on the elevated crossing in the middle of town. A northbound freight train struck the truck with so much force that the front of the lead engine lifted off of the rail and the train subsequently derailed, all caught on camera. The crew onboard survived but were taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

I love the way Kabir thinks he has better solutions after the fact. Kabir woo d is treated before its put into the water. How many piers all around the world built of wood and they stay standing for generations. I love the way, he gets into other people wallet and says, "I would have done it this way", like no one thought of that. There are houses made of that were built in the 1600 and 1700s that are still stand fine. The only reason wood houses are popular in England is only due to the fact that England cut down most of the trees for its navy back in the day. England didn't have a chose after a while, they had to use stone. Mother Nature doesn't care what material a building is made of. Mother Nature moves entire mountains and changes rivers, I don't think a building will survive no matter what materials its made of.

i don't know why they act like it's a big mystery why the windmill caught fire, the generators in them have a maximum rated speed, normally they can change the pitch of the blades to control or stop the rpm. if you notice the windmills that aren't on fire have their blades angled edge on into the wind and have stopped turning. the ones on fire for some reason didn't manage to do that, the high winds oversped the generator causing it to exceed it's rated output than it ether shorted or overheated and the whole thing catches fire.

Losing them, particularly the length, actually endangers his life in a couple of ways and they were beautiful tusks as well. This also means he will not be able to debark fallen trees for nutritional purposes any longer. It makes me angry that the driver allowed him to catch up like that, causing the loss of his tusks.
