Setting up an online bank account for me was like going to the bank, talking to a clerk, had to show my ID, signed some papers, was told to download the app, while he went away for like 5 minutes and when he came back again he helped me activating everything in the app and that's it. I guess in his case it took so long, because security/identity checks are a little mor complex, when it comes to foreigners.

2:30 he gets upset that there is no AC - If you go to Germany, don't visit the first bakery you come across. Try to find the local family bakeries (some also have branches in the region), where the products taste much better than at the big bakery chains.

If you have an existing bank account as a German, and just want to add online banking, you can get a pin printed out, which is good for 24h, and so you need to set up everything during this time, and you‘re ready to go. However, I guess for foreigners the bank will want to verify the address they wrote down, because they are not listed in our Meldeverzeichnis, which registered every German‘s address. So they do it by postal service, and will probably check if the return letter is stamped by the same post office to reduce the chances for identity fraud or criminals

On Sunday mornings, most bakeries will be open in the mornings, restaurant in the afternoon and evenings (they will have a day closed in the week instead), and gas stations, as well as shops in train stations are open. Also, there is a kind of tourism in Germany when one state has a holiday and the next state over doesn’t, many people use the day as a relaxed shopping day over there. Many towns have shopping Sundays when shops are open a few times a year, as well.

Its not that we LIKE to be close to each other, but when i want to be in a spot where someone else is, you bet your butt that i will be as close to that spot (aka the person in that spot) as possible. Also, when i walk on a path in my own pace, and someone 20 meters away walks in a slower pace, and after 10 minutes i catch up to them and can't walk past them (cause they are taking up the whole space) i will walk close behind to try to find an opening where i can run past them. I hate slow walking people blocking my way. As for customer service: That depends on the specific place, but when it comes to stores, workers there have a ton of things to do except for custormers (exception are of course high end or super expensive classy stores). And sometimes customers are just in the way. I worked in a gothic store and i had to place an order for boots from one specific company. That meant i had, within 3 hours, to make an inventory for the boots we still had and how long, to decide if we want to restock or not (and manually cause that was a tiny store with no proper electronic system), then to look up their online website to decide on replacement models etc (on the working computer) and then send it to the boss. That all would take me barely more than 1 hour, but customers were coming in while i did the inventory so i had to drop my list, go cash them up, and the moment i had my list in my hand again, another customers was at the entrance. And when i was finally able to take a look at the company models online, it was lunch time and school kids and stuff were flooding the store. One girl even complained towards me directly that i'm browsing the internet (actually the company website to decide on new purchases) instead of helping her find hairclips. It's sadly not like in the US where customers come before anything else, you need to finish your work. And in that same gothic store i was not happy at all to see a bunch of half drunk hipster student girls waltz in 10 minutes before closing time, looking to try on corsets and MAYBE buy one.

I don't know, I must be living in a bubble or my part of Germany is different. I rarely recognise the situations described in the many culture shock videos of Americans. Bakeries: glad they like our bakeries. I however miss the bakeries of my childhood. We don't have any "real" baker anymore, but big chains. Also, the quality and the variety is not nearly as it used to be. Apparently in other areas, this is still better. Distance: haven't experienced that people get closer to me than in Sweden, Australia, France or the US. I agree with him that I would feel uncomfortable withehat he describes. I don't get the customer service complaints. Sure, waiters in the US have been really nice, but I had very nice chats with waitresses in Germany and Europe in general too. And I cannot claim that the staff in regular stores or at the airports have been very friendly or customer service minded. Also, how much service does one expect in a supermarket, I go in, get my stuff and leave. What else do I need there? It's self service. Bank account: try setting up a bank account or get a phone line in Sweden as a foreigner. Sweden is probably the most online country after Estonia, but it was a nightmare to get everything setup as a foreigner, simply because you are not "in the system yet". Once I was, everything was smooth sailing. I guess that is what he experienced too. Vacation: I worked with US colleagues for years and have visited offices in Boston and Pittsburgh. I don't get why Americans claim they would be so hard working and never take a day off. My US colleagues either weren't in the office, talked about having the day next off, came in late while we Europeans waited for them at the office or walked in slow motion / sat in meetings with no results. All that while bragging about how little vacation they take. Also, compared to my Swedish colleagues, the Germans had the same amount of annual leave but never dared to ask for more than 1,5-2 weeks consecutive days off. Closed Sundays: are people not able to plan for three days in advance? I cannot be bothered to buy food more than once a week, so it doesn't matter to me if shops are closed ONE day a week. Worst case order a Pizza, go to a bakery, Donald's or a fuel station. Everything else, people buy online anyways, so what's the panic?

For the "it is still not dark outside" situations, we germans have a really cool invention installed in almost every window of almost every house. It's called "Rollladen" and yes it *is* spelled with 3 "l's", that's not a typo. If you want to see them, there are videos about them on KZbin. They are metal or plastic slats on the outside of the window, that can black out all the light, plus the protect your windows in case of heavy winds and/or hail.

But you pay double the price when you shop there. And about the Autobahn. No matter how fast you drive, someone is driving faster then you. So please do not experiment on it as a tourist. About everything being closed on Sundays and holidays: True for grocery stores, shops, most authorities (most of those are closed on Saturdays, too and have very short opening times during the week, like 8-12 or so) as well as banks (you can still grab money from the ATM though). Not true for restaurants, cafés, gas stations (although some of them have shorter opening times on the weekend, while others are open 24/7), some museums and other sights and in some cities, you'll find a little 24h- shop or vendor machines where you can purchase basic groceries, drinks and prepped meals also on a Sunday. However, near my parents' is the main plant of a big bakery chain. And that one single bakery is open also on Sundays AND holidays. Of course they charge you extra money as a "weekend and holiday surcharge", which is especially hefty if a Sunday is also a holiday because then they charge you twice. And also keep in mind, that especially grocery stores as well as most other shops will close at like 7/8 p.m. during the week. There are a few exceptions like Kaufland (like Tesco in Britain) in Thuringia, where they're open until like 9:45 p.m.

In Germany we even make a distinction between baking bread & bread rolls and producing sweet pastries & cakes. One is named a baker (Bäcker) and the other one is named Konditor (I dont know if 'confectioner' as translation fits it, cause a Konditor has nothing to do with stuff like producing candy). In Germany you can fill a whole bakery with many different kinds of bread and bread rolls, even without a single cake or pastrie. We dont do that, but it's possible 😉

I have reacted to the speed limit so many times. We have the safest roads in Germany, which means we have the lowest number of deaths on motorways in the world, measured in relation to the population. Motorways are particularly safe. In 2019, 445 cyclists died on German roads, 1,758 people died on country roads and in 2020, 220 road users died on the motorway. Statistically, the highway is the type of road with the lowest risk of suffering a fatal accident.

9:24 The Autoban has no speed limit (in certain parts) but that doesnt mean the Autobahn has no rules. Driver license is about 2000€ and more. The license takes at least a few weeks of intense learning and strict practice tests. And an average driver license takes about 6 months of evening school, multiple days a week. Also there are different types of driver licenses for trucks, cars and motorbikes. You also have to go through 1st aid lessons and you have a practical test there too. You also get tested on your senses like eyes and ears and if you need glasses for driving. And yes, if the test says you need glasses for driving, you must wear them while driving unless you want the police to pull you out. Also holding a phone or any kind of electrical devices is strictly forbidden. If you wanna call somebody, you must use a "Freisprechanlage" (speakers). In short: There are lots of rules that enforce save driving. Even during high speed. I highly recommend not to drive on the Autobahn without being allowed to. But what i recommend is being the passenger (ÒwÓ)b Going 300km/h (about 180mp/h) is basicly suicide if you dont know the rules and the behavior of the other drivers. And yes, I've been on the Autobahn with 180mph+ multiple times. You gotta understand that there is a limit to human reaction time. And past that limit its dangerous for yourself and others. And germans usually stay within their personal reaction time. Average speed is about 80-120mph Trucks are about 20% below that. Dont underestimate SUVs, mini vans and big cars like that. They go 120mph+ too. Safe jurney, bois. Peace x3

I still remember getting online banking. I just went to my bank branch in person and they set it up and I could use it the next day. The funny thing was that the bank clerk lady said something like "And if you at some point don't have internet anymore, you can just switch it back". And it caught me so badly by surprise that I wasn't able to control my facial expressions and send her a look somewhere between "That was the most stupid fucking thing I've ever heard." and "She must be mad!".

I once had a little old lady at the tram stop coming extremely close behind me, and when I changed direction she followed. She was totally dressed in black and probably originated from southwest Europe or an Arabic country. I am pretty sure she was a pickpocket after she always changed direction when I did. So I paid attention to my stuff and fortunately, the tram arrived and I got in, while she didn't. I had previous experience with a similar incident in Palma de Mallorca, Spain in the pedestrian zone where a lady approached me from the front and wanted to give me a rose. I immediately thought of pickpockets and tried to put my hands into the front pockets of my jeans to make sure nobody takes out anything. However, I had problems with my right hand since to my surprise there was already a hand in my front pocket that wasn't mine. Apart from that the only occasion where I sometimes think people coming too close is the checkout in the supermarket. I'm sure checkout will take the same time whether you get close to the other people in the queue or take a little distance, but sometimes I have the impression that some people think that the checkout time reduces the more they jostle. About plastic bags: Since I go to the grocery shop with the bike, a paper bag is not appropriate because it dissolves when it rains. The plastic bag I use I got in 2019, and as far as I remember I didn't buy it since somebody else obviously had no use for it and left it. I use it several times a week for five years now and had to make some little repairs, but that's no reason to throw it away. About the Autobahn: It's a rather safe street. Though the speeds are high and very different, the advantage is all cars are going in the same direction. The total number of accidents in 2022 with injured or deceased persons was 289,672. In towns: 203,226; on roads outside towns without Autobahn: 68,691; on Autobahns 17,755. The biggest percentage of deceased people out of accidents with physical injuries are on roads outside towns without Autobahns at 59%; inside towns, it's 30% and on Autobahns it's only 12%. From all traffic accidents, on roads outside towns one person died out of 295 accidents. on Autobahns one person dies out of 410 accidents, and in towns due to low speed, one person dies out of 2031 accidents. I agree that a speed limit would be a good idea, not for security but at least for combustion engines, to emit less CO2 (climate change). And if I want to ride slow because I have technical problems or there is much water on the street and my tires are old, that's not a security problem. I just ride on the right lane with the trucks. Opening hours differ from state to state. I once went to northern Bavaria and was surprised that all shops close at 6:30pm like 70 years ago. As far as I know, in Munich shops close at 8pm. I live in a mid-sized city in western Germany where many supermarkets close at 10pm (Discounts one or sometimes earlier). In bigger cities like Düsseldorf, some Supermarkets are open til midnight. On Sundays, grocery shops are closed. If you forgot to buy anything, you might find a limited range of food in gas-/petrol-stations and kiosks, or in bigger cities you might find open grocery shops in big train stations and airports. But the prices are higher on Sundays. In Berlin, the laws are slightly different. On the one hand, they are very strict with opening hours on Sundays, that means on Saturdays Supermarkets have to close at 11:30pm since all employees have to leave the shop at or before midnight because they are not allowed to work on Sundays even one minute, on the other hand in Berlin some grocery shops have a license to open on Sunday, you might find those on Google maps. And on Sunday morning in almost all states, Bakeries are open, In some states only two or three hours, in other states four or five hours. Some holidays are not nationwide but only in certain states, so you can cross the state border to go shopping on a holiday, or if you don't live too far away from the national border, we have nine neighboring countries where you might go shopping during our national holidays. And thanks to the Ejuro, in many cases you don't have to change the currency to buy abroad like in the last century.

The whole snail mail/paper waste thing is mostly a generational thing. Older people either don't use the internet at all, or only to a very limited extent, so banks, stores, institutions and so on kind of HAVE to continue using paper in order not to alienate the part of their clientele with some of the highest buying power. Banking can have online snags, but usually nothing that can't be solved by actually going to the bank and talking to an employee. For example, my credit card expired; got the replacement and now have to register it online to prove ID for added security. So far, so good -- but the process is set up for people who do online banking on their phones. I don't, I use my laptop. So, I'll visit my bank ... and it won't take 2 months.

I don't know what it's like for foreigners. But for me as a German citizen, I can say that opening an account is very quick. I recently opened an account and even a securities account for trading on the stock exchange. It all worked via Video-Ident. So I spoke to a bank employee via webcam, showed my ID card etc. and then the salmon was buttered. The only thing that came by post was the giro card. Regarding Autobahn: Sometimes I drive my 5 Series a bit faster on the Autobahn. About once a month. Just passing everyone at 275 km/h is fun. But then I've also been pushed aside by an RS6 Audi xD But driving that fast can be dangerous if you're not used to it and you don't have super good reflexes. Others like to change lanes dangerously without looking properly. Besides, it really is a waste of diesel and I wouldn't think a speed limit of 130 km/h would be a bad idea. I can't confirm the distance thing at all. I've never seen anyone get that close.

Customer service in America is expected. Younger people don't really offer good customer service, for the most part. You'll still get great customer service and a tip is not required. Smiling is just a part of our couture. You don't have to use a plastic bag from the store. Some American stores don't offer bags, you bring your own or the store charges you for them. I do wish all stores did not offer plastic bags, but some do. Great channel, I do enjoy it.😊

Yorkshireman living in Germany! Had to make an appointment (termin) to get a bank account, fortunately he was there, still have to pay €9 per month for the privilege to have my account. Thought i was coool overtakeing a police car at 100mph 🚔, then someone overtook me doing over 130mph. I found it weird when you stand looking at an item on supermarket shelve, Germans will just reach infront of you without saying anything?😮

Think it depends on the bank, opend up an pure online account a few years back at mine, took a few hours and a face call with someone from the bank to verify that I'm really the person I "pretend" to be for opening the account. But it was a big bank in germany that works all over germany, for the small regional banks... it's unlikely for them to even have pure online (I think).

Someone else is so close to me while running in the city that their body parts would touch each other... never! Except on public transport when it is very busy. Luckily I don't know any other Germans either. Oh, I have to correct, standing in line, it can happen that one or the other is very close. I found that very pleasant during C.'s time, with the 1.5 m distance. I noticed that mutual consideration has decreased massively over the past two years. For example, it often happens that others get in your way or bump into you on a narrow footpath because they want to walk past you. Joggers and cyclists drive/run past you very close, which makes you startle. People just stand there in the middle of the footpath and chatter, without paying attention to whether others are passing easily. But drivers have also become very rude to pedestrians. So the "impolite" tone that Germans are known for has often become even harsher. Unfortunately!

Hi, Dwayne! Yes, you`re absolutely right about what you say, that Americans waste lots of plastic bags and so on. Paper is not that problematic. I cannot say anything about the onlinebanking-thing. But I think, we Germans are indeed lightly backwards. 😁 Physical distancing: don`t laugh, but Germans have had to queue a lot in history, for example during the economic crisis in 1929 to get something to eat, and after the war or in the former GDR. (If they got anything at all!) Maybe there's still a little bit of this "going out on a limb" in us? ...Otherwise I know it from the supermarket checkout, the carnival and on the tram! But by the way: I have also experienced this, especially from some foreign citizens, that they often come a little closer than Germans! ...Hm....but this reminds me of India and Japan. Maybe the more west you go the more space you need!?😅 (When a person comes from behand that close I also would think it`s a danger!!!

Football is getting more and more popular for the last decade, but there were teams and a league before that. I plead tight end for a ladies team in the second division. We are a small country, our personal space is less than the ones of Americans, but not much different than in England eg. I feel that immigrants from muslim countries leave even less room when standing in line somewhere. But there are also some Germans getting very close, especially older ones. But that's really not that common. Happens maybe once a month to me. I have an online account with a bank. It took an hour to set up. But there are other name that are way slower, especially the big, long established ones. We take data protection very serious and are kind of paranoid about online data exchange. That's why a lot of things are still with paper. Die example a doctor can't send any information via email to a patient, even if the patient wants it and the doctor wants it.

Just my opinion and thoughts, does not reflect the majority, and to say one thing in advance, i'm not old-fashioned, i'm fully digitized at home.😉 The "Snailmail" for a Bankaccount is normally the PIN for your Account and this is delivered personally to you cause of security reason ( Mine was a Registered letter with signature as confirmation of receipt) After that i setup a pin on my own and a 2 way authentification so i, and only i have access to the account. If the "Snailmail" is open than you know that there was a Stealing und you can report this to your bank to protect your account and you get a new pin. Or can you see if someone reading your email when there is for whatever reason a bypass which you don`t know. Well, this is the way how my bank doing it and it is ok. Direct personal communication is better than electronic conversation cause you even do not know who is writing or has written the email to the bank for i.e. your pin to log in to the account - right ? best regards from germany

Spatial awareness seems to be lacking, especially in the older generation. Whenever an old lady pushes her shopping cart into my heels waiting at the cash desk in the supermarket, I'll turn around and explain that pushing me towards the cashier won't accelerate the process. German directness. The Autobahn generally has no bumps. If there is a bump, there will be a speed limit or even worse construction work with speed limits and traffic jams for at least 5 years😅 I consider driving fast to be safe as long as the conditions allow for it, and as long as you don't tailgate.

2:55 No, it's people taking up the entire walkway with their groups while walking slow as hell, it's people just standing somewhere blocking an entrance or the only way through and it's people generally seeming to have no idea what's going on around them and thus always being in the way somehow. It's not everyone. Maybe not even the majority of people. But there are still soooo many of them. My best friend is like that. It's infuriating when you need to get somewhere. 8:25 No, no, let him speak. He's right. German bureaucracy is paper based to such an extent that we had (might still have, didn't check up on the topic) paper shortages being an issue. We're literally running out of paper bc every stupid little thing has to be done by mail. Changes are slowly being made but barely to a noticable degree. Concerning the online banking thing: don't remember. I think I actually went to the physical bank, did some paperwork and then got my login information and some other print outs maybe. That was it. But certain things absolutely do take forever to take care off. I didn't have access to my bank account for 2 months bc of a clerical error regarding my health insurance bc it took forever to get them to tell me what I actually needed to send in to get things fixed. Called the place, asked them what to do, got wrong information, followed that by sending stuff via snail mail, no response for a week or two OR a letter telling me stuff was still missing, then I'd call them again and repeat the cycle. That was such an ordeal. Why can't I just log in online and fill out whatever form while I'm on the phone with someone? Could be solved in minutes, not months. I hate the bureaucracy here, everyone does. 11:40 "One bump in the road..." on the Autobahn? It's probably the most well maintained highway system in the world. It has to be, for that exact reason. 15:20 Again, that's a minority of people that I'd say annoys most others. Some people just don't understand personal space. Ofc you're standing more closely together in a line in the supermarket but the equivalent here would be some old woman literally running the shopping card into your heels as if you weren't there. I attribute that to the lack of spacial awareness. 21:55 I'm German and I'm the same. Just never cared about holidays and they happen on different days every year, so I never really learnt when what day might be. Now with work, I at least have to look at a calendar sometimes and someone might say sth., so then I'd know but otherwise I still sometimes find myself being surprised by some holiday.

You can get a bank account much faster, BUT: In general, it‘s very true that we are FAR behind in this regard. There’s too much paperwork in Germany. Many things you could easily do online require snail mail here. It really is ridiculous sometimes and I don‘t get it, especially because we do so much for the environment here, on on the other hand we waste so much paper for no reason.

If the Autobahn is bumpy, than there is a speed limit and I don't know if it's an actual law, but I heared that the german car manufactures have to make sure that their cars are safe up to top speed. Therefore I would feel much more safer in a german car at higher speed, than in an american car (especially if it was not ment for the european market)

We have that in Austria too.Speed Limits on different Sections and before Villages or so. But different Rules again. They make sure that there is no Bump on they Road. Hhmm depends on where it is. Underground Station..yes but outside weird...was she in a Hurry? If she was just an old Lady...than that's it. Yes normal....it is called Summertime and Wintertime. Itnot the same all the Time. I think the issue with the old woman was that she had expected him to give way, since she probably cannot speed up sufficiently to pass him easily. Oftentimes, I have the suspicion that particularly the older grannies never updated the expected manners, so they naturally assume a young strapping lad like Nalf to step to the side, lift his hat, make a leg and whisk them merrily on their way. I think not liking anyone following behind is creating instinctual unease in everyone, women and girls even more so.

I‘ll hazard another guess, though, that since most German school children use public busses to get to school which are packed fit to burst, we get used to a forced closeness with strangers, I suppose much like Londoners on the tube… It ain‘t great, but it will not make you walk 8km either.
