Raccoons-a.k.a. trash pandas- are incredibly smart, and incredibly destructive. They are adorable and really funny to watch though. I once literally found myself standing out on my back porch at night scolding one that kept coming back to the trash bins. About a week ago a friend accidentally left her car window down a bit overnight in her driveway, and a raccoon got in, ripping up the upholstery on the ceiling in the process, and found one little package of crackers to destroy.

Just in case nobody else has said, Kabir you need to know that the US nearly chose the wild turkey as our national bird. Benjamin Franklin in particular pushed for it saying that the bald eagle was just a scavanger, but turkeys were (and are) really smart, particularly at evading hunters.

Yeah, not sure about ol' Ben's rationale. It's not as though wild turkeys are apex predators. And going with them would have put an crimp in our Thanksgiving menu. I mean, are you really going to slaughter and serve up our national symbol? Of course we're typically eating domesticated turkeys, not the wild ones, but still...

In much of the country you can see deer just about every night crossing the country roads. Raccoons also and skunks and possums. All very common. The range of the bald eagle has grown considerably due to conservation efforts. In many places they are becoming a common sight. Thanks for the reaction. I wish he had mentioned the exotic looking Gila (heela) Monster. A large pink and black poisonous lizard of the southwest. Also alligators are quite common in Florida. Boa constrictors have been released into the wild by careless pet owners and are now very abundant in the Florida Everglades. Then there is the American Bison, or "buffalo" which is really a tremendous beast made popular as a new kind of burger.

@@kabirconsiders it really depends on the type of bear. Here in the east (I live in Pennsylvania) we have black bears, and I see them probably several times a year. If you leave your garbage out overnight they will find it and rip it apart and spread it all over your yard. But in general, black bears mostly won't attack humans, as they are mostly vegetarian or eat small animals. However, if you live where there are grizzly bears, that's another matter. They are dangerous.

I actually had a pet skunk until he passed away in 2020. His name was Flower, and he was orphaned at a few weeks old when his mother was killed. The fellow who had killed his mother and siblings was just about to finish him off with a shovel when fate, i.e. yours truly on a solo hike in the woods, intervened. After a brief "negotiation", I left with a palm-sized striped skunk kit (baby) as Mr. Shovel had lost every trace of his former sadistic enthusiasm, I guarantee. Afterwards, I quickly did some online research regarding the needs of skunks and discovered that cow's milk can be toxic for them...so I shagged a$$ to the nearest pet supply outlet and obtained goat's milk for him instead, spending the next 2-ish months bottle feeding the little guy. After that I switched him over to solid food, and he grew quite quickly eventually topping out around 15-20 lbs. (about the size of a really large cat). I didn't have his scent gland removed (I felt it was too drastic, subjecting him to surgery and pain, simply for my convenience) and he never sprayed during his 6 year life...not once. He had razor sharp 1 inch incisors, 1 inch claws on his hands and feet, no concept whatsoever of "going easy" during playtime (he generally didn't hold back because he hadn't grown up with siblings letting him know when rough becomes too rough), and was especially mischievous as in hiding things like the television remote and climbing into cabinets or drawers to prowl around lol My hands and forearms often looked as if I'd been slap boxing with a cactus haha It didn't take long, however, for me to develop fast instinctive reflexes and avoid those mouth daggers of his lol Flower would pound his hands on the floor when he was displeased about something like me working an extra hour and being late with his dinner, but he was a good boy. He would often "groom" my head and arm hair just as he would for a sibling, and I'd pretend to do the same on him. He used a litter box and would lie on my chest whenever I was kicked back in the recliner. I've got lots of pictures of the two of us lounging around and goofing off. He was a great, albeit sometimes moody, companion. Sadly, he passed away less than a week after my best friend drowned while fishing near a dam. R.I.P., Gary...one of the most selfless people I've ever known 💯 R.I.P., Flower...daddy misses you, baby boy 🦨❤

From Washington here. I live in an area south of Seattle where suburbs meet rural. Lots of houses, but we like to keep big trees around when we can. These trees along with a river, creeks, a lake, swamps, grass settlements (like people's yards), ponds and reservoirs attract a diverse array of birds including but not limited to the bald eagle, jays, finches, hawks, woodpeckers, ducks and geese (some of whom occasionally stay a whole year). Many of the bird species that show up in my city alone are as colorful as some tropical birds. Aside from birds there's deer, coyotes, rabbits, raccoons, opposums, squirrels, and too many bugs to keep track of. There's of course pests like rats and mice, feral cats and stray dogs. I can say for myself that it is quite easy to encounter most if not all of these and more in a single day; even if you stare out your window the whole day you'll usually see at least 6 different bird species, plus squirrels and bugs. My city is more inland, but it's really easy to get to the coast and to and through the mountains. Washington state is a place where you can visit a metropolis, go to a beach, go hike in snow, and then in a desert all in one day. You'd have to time it right though.

I live in Ohio outside the city, so I see deer on a daily basis. We've also had to deal with skunks, raccoons, and opossums. Last summer we had an opossum situation. I was doing laundry and came into the kitchen and scolded the cat for being on the counter, she quickly got down. When I cam back into the kitchen the cat was on the counter again and batting at something, when I got a closer look I realized the was an opossum behind our storage containers. I called for my husband and told him there's an opossum in the kitchen, and the look on his face was priceless. He quickly got the opossum out of the house. But still it was funny to see our cat batting at it like "what are you?"

Skunks are not as impetuous as you might think from this commentary. I used to work 2nd shift at a printing plant. At 2:00am, I would walk home - - about a mile. You wouldn't believe the wildlife that come out from an urban environment. I've seen and interacted with bears, fox, deer, and a skunk. Most of them were looking for water. Halfway to my home was the village water tower. On occasion, the pumps would overfill the tower, and it would 'flush' the overflow onto the ground. Weirdly, the water came down warm, like bathwater. Tasted good, without all that chlorine (I had to try). There, is where the wildlife congregated. Whenever I met something, I felt I needed to identify myself. I used a sing-song "I see you". Turns out, nighttime is a place of silence. I shouldn't have done that. Anyway, there was a night when I was on the sidewalk, and coming straight at me, was a skunk. Nearsighted as all hell, and never saw me. "I see you". The skunk lifted his head, sniffing the air. Then it stepped off the sidewalk to my right. Did NOT point the backside toward me. I walked slowly to my left across the street to the other side (no sidewalk there). I went on my way, the skunk went on its' way, never to be seen again.

Coyotes can be seen occasionally, depending on where you live, of course. Suburbs near woods and water are their favorite stomping grounds. Opossums come out at night, live near woodland, and are dangerous. You don't want to approach one. Deer are everywhere, I remember seeing them quite often when I lived in Michigan. Skunks and raccoons are numerous, they like living near people, even in the city. When I was young our backyard backed up to a golf course, and our Poodle required many tomato baths from being sprayed by skunks. As pets, their scent sacks are removed, so no spraying, even though they still smell bad. We don't eat groundhogs, I don't think you could get much meat from them, although they are chunkier than squirrels and rabbits, which we have been known to eat. Bald eagles are rare, even close to extinction not so long ago. But we have outlawed the killing of them so their numbers are on the rise again. It's amazing to me how animals stay in one vicinity and don't venture outside of it.

There are flocks of wild turkeys and skunks seen around my work and/or my mother's cemetery. I usually feed them when I go to visit. When I lived there and went swimming in natural bodies of water like springs it was common to see signs to be aware of the presence of alligators. At one spring in particular there was a guarded swimming area with a boat to surveil the perimeter. If an alligator got too close, the swimmers were advised to get out asap. Oh yeah I have also seen a lot of bald eagles some of which were on the property. There was even a ground hog living under the garage for a few years.

Yes. I encounter wild animals on the daily. I live on a golf course in Oklahoma near Oklahoma City. There are families of rabbits, skunks, and possums living under our back deck. We see bunnies several times a day, smell skunks outside some nights, and see mother possums with babies riding on their backs early in the morning scurrying around the deck. We hear coyotes every night, and we must be careful when we let the dogs out, not to let them alone. We also have occasional wild cat - cougar - sightings and tragedies in the neighborhood. I've seen bald eagles, ravens, hawks, and other raptors at times. I've seen black bears when hiking near the Arbuckle Mountains and in Yosemite saw bears and wolves. We have alligators in Oklahoma, but I've only seen them at the zoo. I've visited certain caves to watch thousands of bats emerge at sunset, and we once had a bat come take a drink from our swimming pool. Also, get wild boar meat from local hunters sometimes, but I've only ever seen one.

I didn’t think the feral hogs had quite established themselves yet in Oklahoma, but figured it was only a matter of time- they’re definitely where I live: in AR, your neighbor “next door.” Lol) I have had several occasions spotting them from the road- like in a group, up the hillside next to the road, and just hoping they decided to stay up there, rather than suddenly run down the hill toward the highway!

I live in a city and encounter deer on a regular basis as well as turkey. The northern side of the city I live in is actually a part of the migration pattern for a moose in our area. We also have some south of the city not very far out of the city limits. They are by far the largest wild animal I've come in contact with. You don't see them on a daily basis though unless you get up at the right time during the summer spring and fall.

So I live on a Horse Ranch near the Great Smokey Mountains in North Carolina, about 500 acres, we have just about everything here. We have several older barns in different areas and there are a racoon family near one, a possum family by another, and there's a little skunk that lives somewhere who will come out in the morning when I am working at my gardening shed and he'll just sit about 15 feet away or so and watch. He's a cute lil guy and loves apples, I always have apple slices, as one of the corrals that is closer to my house has a couple horses in it that are just stabled for other people, and give them apples and carrots and hang out and brush them. We've also had brown bears come around, they tend to be harmless and are just looking for food in the trash. Tons of coyotes, my son actually does a coyote hunt in alternating Fall Seasons, because they are so predominant in our area they have to be "thinned out" there are too many of them...and they will kill outside cats and small dogs and all the cute critters. We have wild boar and once or twice up in the hills the closer you get to the mountains, you may see a cougar, but there aren't many. Many, many deer and lots of squirrels, brown, grey and black. And of course there are the "Bald Eagles." There is a lake about 30 minutes from us, called Jordan Lake, it's 10,475 acres large and it is home to the largest population of Bald Eagles in NC (4 active nests and 10-20 individuals). Jordan Lake is one of only 2 nesting sites for Bald Eagles known in North Carolina and has one of the highest populations on the East Coast. We hike and kayak there frequently and I can tell you it is an awesome sight to see those majestic birds flying through the air at full wing spread, they are incredible creatures. Fun Fact, if you kill a Bald Eagle in the U.S., you can get up to 6 mo. in prison and a $15,000 fine. We don't take kindly to idiots hunting down our National Bird for sport. Great reaction, always enjoyable! Oh and no you can't eat whistle pigs! 😁💜

I live in the mountains of Western Maryland. It’s summer here. In the last 24 hours, I’ve seen a black bear cross the main highway, 8 deer visiting and gossiping in the street in front of my house (much to the cars trying to get home’s frustration) avoided the blue jays that decided to nest on my porch light, and wrinkled my nose at the unfortunate skunk that didn’t make it across the road. I work in construction/remodeling. One of our houses on the lake was being framed and a bald eagle decided to nest in the rafters. The EPA and DNR had to monitor and give us permission to continue construction once they were out of the nest, but we had to have all the exterior covered in less than two weeks because eagles typically return to the same spot to nest. I never thought I would check an eagles nest every morning and growl “hurry up” yet here I am 😂

Here in Southern California, I run into coyotes usually in the early mornings or evenings while walking my dog. I am close to a large natural park and several hills on the outskirts of the city. They usually keep their distance since my dog, who is half husky/half chihuahua, looks like an Australian dingo. My dog Apollo is about the same size and shape to the coyotes, so they think that he is one and don't want to get into a fight with him. Luckily, they don't know that he is the biggest baby.

In the Northern California Bay Area we have a lot of open space surrounding our neighborhoods. While hiking on local trails there are signs instructing how to respond to coyotes or mountain lions when you encounter them. When there is not as much water in the hills the deer, mountain lions, or coyotes will wander into towns or cities. Sometimes bears will wander into areas north of San Francisco but that’s rare. Raccoons are mostly seen and it’s cool to see them walking through the street. We also have wild turkeys that will hang out each Fall Season. Saw a Turkey walking through downtown early one morning in a smaller East Bay city. It kept looking at its reflection in the shop windows while it walked along the sidewalk. That’s my favorite wildlife sighting so far.

It depends on where you live to see wild animals regularly. Small, rural towns or outskirts of cities, you're much more likely to experience wild critters. Every now and then, you'll see a coyote during the day, which they're active at night. It's the sound they make when communicating and excited when hunting. It's haunting. If you don't know what it is, like not being from the area, it can scare the hell out of you. Coyotes are considered a nuisensce or pest in many states and allows you to hunt them without a permit. Skunks can be kept as pets because the stink sac is surgically removed when young. They knock it out like a neutering. That's how ferrets are able to be kept, which are immediate relatives of skunks. Their sacs are removed when they get spayed/neutered. In the beginning, you said that you didn't think we had lions or tigers. Tigers no, lions yes. Mountain Lions aka "pumas" aka "cougars". They can get anywhere from 100-200 pounds. As for the racoons aka "trash pandas", are actually pretty cool and very smart. But I hated them when I had my chickens. Generally, a shot to the face with a bb gun made them give up eventually. Doesn't kill but it stings. Then we have rattlesnakes or "vipers" that aren't found anywhere except north and some parts of South America.

We told my uncle about it & he insisted that Clark County didn't have bears - my son & I disagreed. It wasn't long after our sighting that someone shot a huge black bear in central WI. I grew up & live on the Iron Range in Northeastern Minnesota & we have black bears around here all the time. My parents house is 2 miles from town & they have animals in their yard & in the woods across the highway all the time - so many deer eyes in the clearing at night that you can't count them. We have had deer, black bears, fox, wolves, bobcats, cougars/mountain lions, coyotes, timberwolves, beavers, etc in the area. I live in town & have had bears, wolves, etc in my yard/alley/front road too. Lots of forested area up here. I’m from Minnesota and have lived in Florida for many years now. I’ve seen my share of wild animals. My cousin moved in with her daughter and her family in New Jersey to take care of the kids. I lived with them for a year. A new housing development up in the hills and one day we counted 30 white tailed deer in the front yard. I’ve seen them all over no matter where I’ve been. They are beautiful but destructive to the grass. I’ve seen bald eagles everywhere I’ve been too. Their nests are huge! Raccoons of course. They’re everywhere. And so are opossums. They carry their babies on their back or abdomen. They are the only marsupials native to the USA. Unfortunately they quite often end up as road kill. You can see their eyes at night shining in the headlights. Even when they’re off the road. And here in Florida we have a lot of interesting birds and ducks. I saw a pink bird once in the pond right outside my apartment in Tampa and it was not a Flamingo. It was actually from the heron/crane family and is pink because it eats shrimp just like the the flamingo. Who knew? I saw another bird I had to look up and found out it was a wood stork. In the heron/crane family again but it looks more like a vulture even tho it was white. We have tiny lizards everywhere and don’t see, but hear the tree frogs in the spring. It’s deafening. And last but not least gators 🐊. We see them often enough and people and pets get bit or killed by them every year. I don’t go in any water here, including the Gulf of Mexico anymore. Not just because of gators but I especially don’t go into ponds or lakes here because of them. Oh my favorites, the dolphins 🐬 and manatees. We see dolphins and manatees sometimes by the shores, waterways, canals, and manatees hang out in the warm springs and by the warm water by the TECO electric plant in the winter. Manatees are the most amazing animals and endangered so very well protected here. No natural predators, not even sharks or whales. They are a gentle giant at 3000 pounds. They are mammals, and they float around and eat algae and lettuce all day.

When I was a child, back in the 1960s, a neighbor had a skunk under his house. He thought it might have rabies, so he managed to trap it and destroy it. I won't tell you how, as it might get you flagged. He later discovered 4 baby skunks under the house. He took then to the vet and had the gland that creates the smell removed. Our family adopted the only female. We named her Chanel. She used a litter box, like a cat, but she preferred dog food, and would walk on a leash like a dog. We had an unfinished basement that was a bit damp, and she loved being down there. She would eat bugs and caught any mice that came in. She would snuggle and purr like a cat. She was very sweet. We had a repair man come one day and forgot to tell him that the skunk was in the basement. He took the stairs 3 at a time coming out of there! We later had to move for my Dad's job, and stayed with my Grandma whilst looking for a house. She would not let us bring the skunk, so we ended up giving her to a petting zoo.

I live out in the middle of nowhere, so I run into wildlife constantly and defiantly every night. I have deer that run by the house every spring, a couple of moms with babies in tow, and one male that likes to use my fence to rub his antlers on. Wild turkeys run down the road in fall, and hairless bears I see in the woods across from my house commonly in spring but can see them in other seasons too; I always got foxes running around and raccoons, and last week there was a large gator in the road bout 1/2 a block away from my house. Right now, the snakes, mostly harmless types, opossum (I had one of them in my house last week) are out like crazy, along with hawks and owls. I got tiny dogs, so hawks and owls are always a pain when off. Right now, I have a group of turkeys in front of my car. Right now, we suppose to have a hurricane hit in the next few days, so we might see an increase in wildlife as the storm gets closer as they like to take shelter under my storage buildings. But like I said, I live in the middle of nowhere, and I have woods on all sides of me and a national forest not far, so it's not something most people would deal with as much.

So, my husband made it a home with a slanted roof and heat and carpet in the house, for winter. When we opened the roof, we had a bowl in the house and we fed it and gave it clean water. We took the cat to the vet once every year and she lived with us, for at least 12-14 years. Anyway, in the milder months, we put the food on top of her house, once in a while we would see an opossum eating and many morning we could smell that a skunk had been there. He never sprayed, just had a skunky smell. And when the raccoons came, we hold tell by the dirty water.

Possums are usually running through our yards or living in our trees down here and typically get along well with our cats. Raccoons will be in your trash on a weekly basis if you aren't careful. Deer will cross your path or property weekly if not daily, depending on how rural your area is. (I live about 20 miles outside of Houston & we are still considered part of the Greater Houston Area. It usually takes up to about 2 1/2 hours to get from one side of the Greater Houston area to the other). Groundhogs will dig Burrows in your yard & they steal your food plants by the roots & pull them down into their burrows & eat them, so they can absolutely be pests - but I always try to capture & relocate them. Because of all the new construction always going on down here also, we sadly see the coyotes being displaced frequently these days. Because of that they are often lacking food - so we have been seeing people's pets being eaten in the neighborhoods near much of the new construction. I find it horribly sad for the coyotes as well as the pets and people. (We have lost 2 of our cats to the coyotes and a neighboring subdivision recently had a couple who watched their small dog be surrounded and shredded by a pack of coyotes. That, finally after 2 years of regularly missing animals around us made the news, and the county finally stepped in, caught the coyotes & relocated them). We dont see the bald eagles as much down here - pretty rare to be honest although ravens and hawks are frequently spotted. Along with snakes (rattle snakes most commonly), spiders and scorpions are common sightings as well. Skunks are a normal sighting or smell, and don't forget the armadillo who we often find dead in the road down here as they jump straight up then roll into a ball for protection, often jumping straight up & hitting the bumper of the oncoming car that scared them in the first place. Oh, and mountain lions are frequently heard although much less seen around here as well. Thanks again friend!!!

It mostly depends on the time of day you are out and about. Of course, during normal daylight hours, seeing squirrels, rabbits, and birds are quite common. It's the nighttime and very early morning that you usually get to see the wildlife around where I live in Indiana. When we lived in the country, while eating breakfast we often had the pleasure of looking out our kitchen window, watching deer feed in the field nearby. Deer have been known to wonder into the outer parts of the city I live in. Seen three feeding in someone's front lawn one time when driving through a neighborhood on the south end of town. One time a deer managed to find its way into a shopping center's parking lot - again in the south end of town. Another time the local university, which is right in the center of our town, had a deer get confused and "trapped" in the tennis courts when it managed to make its way on campus. Years ago, I use to deliver newspapers early in the morning (often before sunrise). While doing so I often ran across racoons and skunks roaming about. Racoons, while extremely cute (some people even have them for pets) can be quite destructive (and dangerous). My brother was attacked by one when he took trash out one evening and ended up having to get rabies shots. A friend of mine was away visiting for a few days and came home to find that racoons had managed to get into her home through the chimney. They tore her house up - especially the living room, trying to get out through her large window. Another friend was doing some remodeling of their bedroom and had temporarily placed their dresser out on the front porch over night while they painted the room. During the night they heard a noise from the porch and went to look at what was going on. Apparently, they had left a drawer slightly opened on the dresser and a racoon was digging around in the drawer. When they startled the racoon, it took off running down the middle of the street - tangled up in and dragging along my friend's night gown that had been in the drawer.

I love how Americans just seem to know Dawn and dusk are the hours to beware, we don’t even really think about it anymore. Every state has wildlife and even in downtown urban areas we see them. England really does have very few species to worry about, their cute badger is about it and their deer running into you (never saw one in London though). Plenty of bird watching lol. I missed the animal trails that ran through neighborhoods & yards where you would just casually see them through your kitchen window, deer, foxes, turkeys, coyotes. Nope none of that.

I live just outside of the downtown area of my city, so I was surprised to see possums on multiple occasions! My guess is they’re after the trash in the dumpsters in the back alley. My parents live in a much more suburban area and have a big back field, so we’ve all seen lots of animals. We have a hawk that lives nearby (I named him Stephen Hawking), I’ve seen a fox, a deer, a coyote, raccoons, possums, an owl (or rather, heard that one), and even little skinks in the garden! The coolest thing I ever saw in that area was a group of vultures eating some roadkill near a local Catholic school. I was a passenger in the car with my mom and they were on my side. They didn’t fly off when we drove by, but I swear, they were the biggest birds I’ve ever seen. Not the most attractive, but definitely doing their job in cleaning up carrion!

We live just outside of Washington DC and have opossums, red fox, and deer in our yard daily. Squirrels and chipmunks, of course. Sometimes raccoons and skunks. I've seen a black bear on our golf course (we let him play through...). We also have a few nests of Bald Eagles nearby, too.

I live in the upstate of South Carolina very near the mountains. I encounter deer, groundhogs, rabbits, foxes, squirrels, skunks and snakes at least once a week. I have also encountered bears, coyotes and even mountain lions but to a much lesser occurrence. It's a very beautiful and rural part of the country and I love it here.

Hi, North Carolina here. We live in the area between Asheville, NC and Johnson City Tn. We see Ground Hogs daily, usually alongside the highway, that goes for Opossums too. We have White Tailed Deer that cross our lawn early in the mornings and late in the evenings. Every once in a while, a Black Bear will cross the yard and scare our dogs. Raccoons are regular visitors, especially after we've had a BBQ. Only seen one Coyote so far this year. Our state is reintroducing Coyotes and Grey Wolves in our mountains here. We also have Mountain Lions (Cougars) but we haven't seen any wolves or Mountain Lions as of this missive. I think they're higher up in the mountains. Enjoy your reactions a lot. Blessings always.

I live in Dallas, Texas🇺🇸 and our neighborhood is quite suburban; not at all remote or rural. That said, we have a little family of opossums who live in a yaupon holly tree at the side of our house, and they love to walk our backyard fence line at night. They’re actually great to have around, as they eat grubs and insect pests. Ours are quiet and shy, though some can hiss & show teeth if they feel threatened; that, or they keel over and play dead if too suddenly shocked. People often think they’re a kind of rat, but they’re actually marsupials. There’s also a family of raccoons who live in a storm drain at the end of our block, but we only rarely see them. Cute as can be, but can get into all kinds of mischief at night. (Possums & coons are both nocturnal). Also in our community are a few coyotes, some bobcats (lynxes), hawks, and falcons, all of whom can grab puppies or very small pets - like our 3 lb./1.5kg chihuahua.kmdogs in an instant.

I live in suburban Connecticut. Within the last few years I have had groundhogs, deer, possums, and skunks in my backyard. Driving around I have had bald eagles fly over the road, a coyote cross the road in front of me. But fun facts, opossums are North America's only marsupial and they eat mosquitos. Very cool and helpful animal. They're actually kind of cute.

I live In a real rural area on the coast of North carolina and just the other day my dog ran a couple of white tails out of my yard. I've seen plenty of critters crossing the road. Turtles, deer, wild turkey's, opossums, raccoons. You see squirrels every day and plenty of birds. Right now the tufted titmouse and black cap chickadee is a common sight too.

Every year, we have a flock of wild turkeys that roam our neighborhood. There's usually a handful of adults and several baby turkeys. We also have a family of blue jays and robins in the back yard. We don't have any squirrels or raccoons or deer, but my grandparent's have all three at their homestead about half hour away from me, further into the mountains. I've never seen a coyote myself, but coyotes from what I've been told are an animal that is mostly seen rather than heard, mostly at night time.

I live in WA on the coast.. and we see weekly, black bear, white tailed dear, coyote, beaver, bald eagles, opossums, hawks, owls... the list really does go on. We only moved out here 2 years ago and it's rather spectacular. As far as the opossum lines in WA and OR, Lawrence needs to look at a map that shows vegetation.. both eastern Oregon and Washington are grass lands, so what he is seeing is where we have a lot of tree growth. Including along the Columbia River Gorge. :)

Wild animals are not common in cities but I live in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, about 2 or 3 miles from the Mississippi River, and wild animals are frequently spotted near there -- woodchucks (groundhogs) and, since the pandemic, coyotes, and other wild animals as well that came back during lockdown. Some years ago, we saw a family of woodchucks (my first time seeing a woodchuck) while picnicking one 4th of July along the Mississippi. Nearly every time we venture outside of the Twin Cities, we encounter deer along the highway (you say roadway). Groundhogs, by the way, aren't cute. They live in the ground and burrow extensively in their habitats. When they invaded our neighborhood, they left multiple holes across our lawns. That's why they're considered pests digging up lawns and gardens. We also have rabbits since the pandemic when people weren't traveling about much. Nature reclaimed her land. It's not common but wild turkeys have been seen in my neighborhood parading down the middle of the street. And I live about a couple of blocks from a grain elevator that houses a flock of geese throughout the winter. They leave to travel further north in the summer but always return. I think it's the grain they find for eating and the proximity to fresh water at a nearby waterfall. And once an injured duck landed in my front yard. Her mate stood by showing concern. I went inside to phone animal control for help but while I was on hold I looked out the window and they were gone. I guess she recovered. I think people on the outskirts of the Twin Cities have seen bears and deer in their backyards. When I lived in Amherst, Massachusetts, raccoons frequently invaded our trash cans but Amherst is a small university town and I was sharing a house with other college students who were not always careful about securing the lid on the trash. Lawrence wasn't joking there.

In Florida, I saw oppossums, raccoons every day. Also, I saw a coyote and 6 wild boar. To be clear: I LIVED TEN BLOCKS FROM DOWNTOWN TAMPA! And I ALWAYS checked under my car for an alligator. Pygmy rattlers were a problem and good to scan for from a distance since if you're within six foot before you notice, you WILL get bitten and WILL go to the emergency room so as not to die. Now in Pennsylvania. I feed the squirrels and birds to get them through the winter. There's a cutie-pie groundhog who lives beneath my shed. My brother's garden is always ravaged by deer. Neighbors on the outskirts of town regularly have bears rip apart their garbage. Critters are an actual thing. Thank goodness!

In New Jersey where I live I've seen Coyotes as BIG as German Shepherds. I even had a Wild turkey that would visit me when I ran a Uhaul in avenel. It would walk into my office and thru out the warehouse. I even had a dish of cat food outside my door that it would eat from. It would even let me pet it... it was about 3ft tall, 25 lbs. I would also see whitetail deer daily, as my boss would feed them daily. He had a chicken coop on the property. The deer were so use to us that I have a video of me within 3ft of a male deer eating. I grunted and said " ha you what are you doing" and he didn't even respond. Black bears in north Jersey. In the waters, We had a bumpback whale come up within 10ft of the boat. I had a seal jump into the boat that was being chased by a shark. We have bullnose Rays weighing 35lbs, skates, bull sharks, mako sharks and great whites in our waters. No bald eagles but we have Osperys, geese, ducks and doves.

Here in Seattle wildlife is abundant within the city limits and just 10 minutes outside of the metro area it gets even more wild. You'll see multiple racoons weekly and they are massive. ( About 2.5 times as large as the racoons on the East Coast). The area of the city I live in is a breeding ground for Blue Herons so those are seen on a daily basis, and during spring and summer you'll see a bald Eagle about once a month. Heaps of Osprey as well. Spend an hour at the beach and you'll have a seal sighting and there is a popular rock that the sea lions like to sunbathe. A boat ride out to the San Juan Islands and you'll encounter Orcas. The mountains start 10 minutes outside of the metro area and there you'll see plenty of deer, and if you go camping you can encounter bear and mountain lions. In the wilderness, a number of species of birds will land on your hand to eat seeds if you hold your hand above your head, and chipmunks will do the same if you cup food in your hand.

The North American countries have a lot of land and, if you live in a rural area like I have, you're likely to see wild animals quite often. In the north central part of the states over the years I've seen deer (white tails, lots of them), foxes, bears, racoons, badger, fishers (a large weasel), woodchucks, groundhogs, skunks, beaver, muskrats, wolves, coyotes, turkeys, rabbits, grouse, eagles, osprey and lots of other spectacular birds like the Pileated Woodpecker, falcons, hawks, owls, ravens, vultures... Often in my yard. A neighbor once told me he'd seen cougar tracks circling my house one winter and I'd have dearly liked to see that. While visiting the southwest, I'd seen wild peccary (or Javelina, a type of wild pig), rattlesnakes, and coyote. People in rural areas have to take precautions with their cats and dogs. Wild animals in urban areas are less common but, like Laurence points out, there are still plenty. I feel sort of sorry for the British isles, having long ago eliminated so many. But I've heard that there are efforts to reintroduce some.

Seeing these wild animals regularly depends mostly where you live obviously and the time of year. When I lived in the country (between Kansas City & Lansing, KS) I'd see deer & wild turkeys frequently. Nighttime is when you'd see opossums or raccoons. Opossums are cranky & will hiss at you especially if you aren't welcoming. Would hear coyotes every night when they'd gather for a howling, seriously. Coyotes always came by hoping to grab one of our hens. So would racoons and opossums. Would sometimes see bald eagles around rural areas of Missouri River on the Kansas Side and Wyandotte County Lake - also depends on the time of year. One evening we saw a skunk family (to which we gave a wide berth) walking down the middle of an unpaved road with Mom in the lead and 4-5 little ones following in single file behind. They're really pretty but not something you'd want to get close to at all. They would raid our garden at night for the sweet corn. My husband and two kids laid in wait one night wanting to get whoever was robbing us & they all got sprayed - smelled them coming back from 100 feet away through an open window. That won't wash out - clothes have to be thrown away.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Encountering wildlife is frequent. 2 years ago, a young mountain lion was tranquilized near the Giants ballpark in SF. This year, two very young mountain lions were found starving on the Peninsula and we were brought to the Oakland Zoo for care and rehabilitation. At University of California Berkeley, we love watching our resident Perigrin Falcons Annie and her new mate Alden atop the iconic bell tower. Mountain lions live and stalk near the campus. Coyotes will trot across the Golden Gate Bridge from Marin to check out the city life and live in Golden Gate Park.
