The nazis burned books, as said books were books by people who wrote about equality, empathy, treatment for people who suffer or simply befriending other nations, whatever is that the nazis condoned as 'un-german' in the time of the third Reich.

And than it 's completely like the question was understood wrong and seems a little bit odd to me.

I never asked someone ever "which side of the wall are you from?". The differences between Berliners from the east and west part are still there but I guess these will diminish over time. I grew up in the GDR and I'm not that often in the far east of Berlin. I'm pretty sure younger people don't care much anyway. FYI: What I always find fascinating. Due to the split of Berlin in East and West Berlin the public transport network got split as well and in the 50s west Berlin got rid of nearly all tram tracks while concentrating on busses and subway. To this day you'll find hardly find any tram tracks in West Berlin and hardly any subway stations in East Berlin.

16:27 they failed to mention that the Nikolaiviertel as completely destroyed in WW2 and it was fallow land for around 40 years until the GDR reconstructed it in the 80s for the 750th anniversary of the city. However, it was not reconstructed true to the original, but they built prefabricated buildings were erected with historical elements

People do not ask which part of the wall one is from. That would be like asking a Londoner from which side of the Thames he is from. Instead, you ask about the town, the district, or the quarter (in German: Bezirk) someone is from, and by that, you know. If someone is from Berlin-Marzahn, they grew up in a different environment than someone from Berlin-Wedding. It is not very different from London, where you have very different districts with very different kinds of people gathering there: working class here, upper class there, more students and alternative lifestyles in one place, more families and nature in another. People are aware of the East and West division and the history related to that, but they don't talk in that way.
@KoenigTamar

No, we don't ask each other whether we live in East or West Berlin, but we do ask specifically about the neighbourhoods or the quarters, we live in. And some neighbourhoods have a bad reputation on way or the other. I guess, that's the same in every large city in the world. And Munich outside the city centre (which is tiny) is not as nice and beautiful as it seems. It has its fair share of soulless, square appartement blocks built in the last couple of decades.

Absurd, Frederick did not arranged Unter den Linden to let Berlin look like Paris or London. He has never been to Berlin or London thus he had no idea how this cities looked like. He had his own ideas and a very competent architect (Andreas Schlüter). Schlüter later has also designed and build for Tsar Peter the Great in Saint Petersburg (Grand Palace, Monplaisir Palace in Peterhof Palace Complex, Kikin Hall, Summer Palace)

You don't need to ask which side of the wall - you ask east or west, GDR or FRG... Pretty much the same and so different. The wall has a huge impact on the city and its citisens. It was a deathly area for decades. The whole city was a high security prison with death penalty for escaping attempts.

In Berlin - there a some "fractions" of the former "Wall" still standing. Originally it was about 43.8 km long - the biggest remaining part is the "East side gallery" along the river Spree. Just a little bit more than 1.3 km long. It is where some very iconic art was created after the GDR opened up its frontier (aka "the wall") after November 1989. There you have the kissing Breschnew and Honnecker - and else. This "East Side Gallery" very quickly developed into a tourist hot spot - and not really blocking any transportations - so this part of the Berlin Wall is kept as it was. The pictures have even be repainted not long ago - as paint colours are fading.

You mentioned that people say Berlin is dirty. No. There are dirty corners, like in every big city, but I lived there for seven years, part of that time I was a student, so you can imagine I didn't live in the rich quarters, but I didn't find Berlin dirty. It is not as clean and tidy and shiny like other German cities are, but who says that every city has to be like Munich or Stuttgart? Berlin is unique in many ways, and you can either love it or hate it. There is no in-between. I think the real reason they didn't go up the TV tower (the elevator accelerates like a rocket!) is that it was closed during the pandemic. Usually it's crowded with tourists there, any day of the week, in any weather, and if you queue for less than half an hour, you're lucky. Anyway, they used the pandemical curfew to take pictures you'd never get when there are people around. DW has the privilege of being financed and authorized by the government, no other journalists would have been allowed to film like that. DW will never show you the nightlife, so here's a short list of clubs I have been to around 20 years ago. The clubs still exist, but most probably have changed in style a lot since I was there: Kater Blau (in my time: Kater Holzig), Berghain, Tresor, Kitkat Club. Trust the locals, there are small "underground" clubs that come and go, so wherever a nice person may lead you, follow. And it's always an advantage if a regular invites you, but I don't have to tell you that.

23:42 I‘m a Spaniard living in East Berlin and that’s bullshit. That’s literally one street, so it’s not representative for East Berlin as a whole. And for the most part the street is really beautiful, but they literally just showed the ugly parts. Btw it’s actually on the candidate list of UNESCO world heritage because of the spectacular architecture. Watch another video of Berlin. This one is BAD Btw, east Berlin is by far the better part! Capitalism failed in West Berlin! All ghettos of Berlin are in the west. The east is well-kept, cleaner and the architecture is prettier. In spite of that, the trendy neighbourhoods with clubs and bars are in the east
@KoenigTamar

Whether East Berlin or West Berlin is 'better' highly depends on where you go, what you like to do and how old you are. And btw after reunification the eastern part of the city was completely run down and in total disrepair when it comes to appartment houses. So it is no wonder, that it looks clean and pretty now, because the major renovation and restauration period is just a couple of years ago. In the 90ies I lived in East Berlin, it was an adventure, but the appartment situation was desastrous. And to be honest, I wouldn't want to live there now if they paid me to. Overrun by party-tourists, pretentious international artsy folk (no offence intended, it's just not my thing) and students, students, students. Perfect for young people, nice to visit, nice for nightlife, but not really for living if you are older than 30.

what is that for an advice? Berlin has not only much more beautiful sights than any other German city (simply because there is almost more from everything and most structures are still from the beautiful Prussian era) but are you really so stupid to believe that Luebeck was more beautiful/interesting than Berlin? The problem is also that people who make such nonsense suggestions usually dont know WHY for instance cities like Luebeck are interesting, because they are not aware how important the Hanseatic League as part of the Holy Roman Empire (basically a trade empire within an empire) was and that the Nórthern Maritime Trade Highway TOGETHER with the on the other side of the HRE also rather more independent cities like Venice, Florence etc. who created a similar Trade Empire in the mediterranean Sea - which were connnected together and created the MAIN highways in Europe in which also most inventions, renaissance etc. took place ... people who dont know why Berlin has in reality much more beautiful spots than any other German city (just more spread out and more often combined with edgy stuff - but among them are the biggest connected old building structures like in Prenzlauer Berg anyway) also often dont know a fuck WHY other German cities are interesting for other reasons, not just Luebeck which connected Northern Russia Novo Grad, the Baltics/Finland with UK or spots like Bergen Norway, but also why Aachen or Cologne are much more interesting than many believe. Too many dont know why the Brandenburger Tor is cool and why it has its size (its a replica of the main gate to the Acropolis - one stands basically in front of the Parthenon/Acropolis!), why not just the Cologne Cathedral but the high density of big Romanic Churches makes Cologne really special (idiots only think its the 'Dome) or why Aachen, the de facto capital of Karl des Grossen and center of the base of the Frankish Empire (France which has for this reason the SAME name as Frankfurt, Franken in Bavaria etc. because als refers to the Germanic Frankish tribe confederation) is important and so on ....

In contrast to most all other german cities, Berlin is extremly divers. It has all notes and everbody can find, what you want. It never gets boring. It can be busy, it can be quite. It is very green and has a lot if water and parks. The city west is different to the city east. And the city itself is very different to the outskirts. And what it makes uniquet of all other cities in the world is the historie. A city over 3 million people devited in to parts after W2. And you can see the different of the two parts still today (for example different traffic light figures, or the tramsystem exist almost in the east part). And because of division, Berlin has sometimes two manly institutions where is normely one in a city, like a zoo, a city center or opera house. In the city-center of Berlin there are two parks with the size of the central park in NYC. One of the park was once an airport. Tipp: There is a video calls "Munich vs Berlin by an american!" It is good because it shows the different without bashing, neither berlin nor munich. Or an other video from an american how lived many years in London "The pro and conts of living in Berlin". He compars many aspects Berlin vs London but also Berlin vs. Munich, Hamburg or Dresden.

Only a few hundred meters of the more than 100 kilometers of the Berlin wall are remainig, to memorize the 168 people who were shot there trying to leave the east during the 28 years the wall was in function and to have an urban art space there. Eastern Berlin was the capital of the German Democratic Republic, which was socialist, not communist, which was the far future goal I think. This east and west aspect gives Berlin a more divers cultural vibe and adding the new city center, Berlin still has its east and west city centers in addition :)

As always (more or less) a VERY brilliantly performed presentation of the "Multi-kulti-metropolis of BERLIN"!! What I especially like about this, is the sketching of the memorial of the AWFUL demolishing of the works of the anti-Nazi philosophers, writers and so on, that took place on the 10th of May 1933! Also the viewing of the Stolpersteine (the small engraved gold bar look-a-like bricks that are mounted along the pavements) which mention the name of the victims of the Holocaust! And there is still a rest (a few hundred yards) of the WALL standing there, as a memorial of an era that created so much prejudice and hatred between people, WITHOUT any proper and real reasonability! In fact, the wall was WAY beyond that!! One of the most iconic paintings is also still remaining; the kissing between the comrades Brezhnjev and Honecker! So dear Dwayne, I'm far from being sole when stating that WE really look foreward to more of your sincere analysis of the German society and different aspects of it! All the best for you!! thats a horrible Berlin video! It does not represent Berlin at all. This means: if you visit Berlin its like you visit an entire different city as shown in this video. And thats not an exaggeration. You will immediately feel and see that if you visit Berlin. While you had for Munich and Hamburg videos created by people which intentionally made great atmospheric shots and also selected good spots, in this case you have a typical static DW (Deutsche Welle = a public broadcast service) with a boring superficial unmotivated school kid like documentary' style working through a short list of some spots. Its more like an uninspired dia show showing a few spots they read about. One could do (literally) with AI tools like Invedia much better videos within 5 minutes (I mean that literally: go check a tutorial if you dont believe that: 1-5 minutes to create something better!). This means its like you watched no Berlin video. And this is not just because DW failed by choosing bad weather, corona, totally unprofessional and bad video shooter/creator. If a person just switches a smart phone cam on, rides via public transit from Hauptbahnhof to Warschauer Strasse then you got already a much better result even without any saying, edit or and no special spot was shown ...

The younger generation does not care if your from the former east or west diveded part of berlin but in the mind of the older generation there are still prejudices from both sides. The east part of berlin was occupiered by the sovie union which was heavily influenced by Marxism and Leninism and west germany on the other hand was occupier by the americans, the englisch and the the french who tried to spread capitalism and liberalism. Under these circumstances people had a different socialisation on both sides so even they are litarally in the same city like 2km away from each other they had a total different mind set, currency, goods to buy or prosperity. So there was a huge difference but its decreesing and everyone younger than 30 does not care which part your from.

I think DW's video is boring. I confess, I probably couldn't represent Berlin better. I have only been to Berlin 3 times so far. If I didn't know Berlin, the video wouldn't have inspired me to visit. Berlin is just a nice weather city to visit. Although this is the case in many cities... I was in Leipzig (city in Saxony) a month ago. Oh, the vibes of the city were so depressive, similar to here in Halle, the city where I live. It's completely different in summer! ;) In the neighborhood where I live we have a neighborhood manager who is from Scotland. He himself finds Halle interesting because of the old GDR prefabricated buildings. As a GDR child and now living in this prefabricated building for 8 years, I just find it terrible! When the weather is nice, Hall also has its own flair. Halle is also historically interesting. In the old GDR area I find only a few cities interesting, these are Dresden, Erfurt, Weimar, Jena, and partly Gotha. In Potsdam the Sanssouci is still very interesting. Then the coastal towns of Stralsund, Warnemünde and Rostock are still super interesting. (I'm probably just a coastal child at heart) I'm completely with you on your 1st place with Hamburg. I was in Hamburg last summer, I felt absolutely comfortable and would have liked to stay. I have a rather bad memory of Cologne. The cathedral is interesting there and it has nice corners. In addition to the beautiful corners, Cologne unfortunately also has the rather unsightly corners where it stinks and simply looks unkempt.

Not so good Video of Berlin. There are so many more to see. Berlin is absolutely Nr. 1 in Germany 2. Stuttgart 3. Cologne 4. Hamburg 27. Munich 😂

You want historic buildings to not charge admission. That means you want us Germans to let our historic buildings fall into disrepair because there is no money for restoration. If we Germans thought like that, there wouldn't be 25,000 castles and palaces in Germany. They would have fallen into disrepair like the many ruins in England.

In Germany we have "U-Bahn" for "Untergrundbahn" underground railway aka subway. "S-Bahn" for "Strassenbahn" street railway aka tram and Hamburg has the "Hochbahn" elevated railway which, strangely enough, is largely underground

S-Bahn means "Stadtbahn" not Straßenbahn.

I lived in Berlin for 2 years! It stinks everywhere, its very stressful, people are mad...smokin crack in the subway like its nothing. I would never go back to live there! Only for vacation! I love and hate Berlin at the same time, like a toxic relationship!

Hi Dwayne. Of course, you have a lot of interesting architecture, places and some cool peoples in Berlin. But in fact, Berlin is one of the most dirtiest towns in Germany. Same as Dresden. Some interesting buildings in a small area, but the rest is not worth to visiting.

If you visit you should bring your tea with you. You can ask for just a jug of boiled water and they won't be offended. High chance you get it for free if you tell them you need an english tea for a proper start. Cause we are Coffee addicted and understand it. The most cafés/hotels have black tea on their carte, maybe an Earl Grey, but the taste is disgusting. I've never get a good tea (PG) out of the UK! (My Boss offered me one and I drank it to be polite cause Im normally in to coffee - I was stunned and understand, why you guys love your tea! You don't get it here in german gastronomy.)

Maybe "11 things I hate about living in Berlin" just 11 months old by Radical living and "S**, dr*gs and Berlin club culture" 3 weeks old by The movement hub are the videos you want to see.😊 I lived in Berlin in the 90s and will never go back.😳🙄
