I saw it mentioned that the reason Jake could pull of the ruck march without a sock change or blisters was because he had gone barefoot most of his life and the soles of his feet were nothing but callous. That certainly explains it.

You can fry eggs on a piece of metal. Once it is hot enough, you'll fry the eggs. Hell, you can fry eggs on the road if the temperature is hot enough. Go to Phoenix in July and drop on a sidewalk and it will begin to fry. Phoenix in July is at least 112F everyday.

to break down the ruck march, it has been determined that nowadays a ruck march is 12 miles carrying anywhere from 70 -100 lbs. A spectacular pace is usually 4 miles per hour. On average a march is between 2-3 miles per hour. It would take at least 68 hours at a speed of 2 mph at 4mph it would take 34 hours for 136 mile ruck.

That's today. WW2 was a lot different and elite units were even more different. Heck airborne are faster then regular infantry even today. Not to mention they were used to walking a lot more and carrying heavy shit while doing it.

@@m2hmghb The 136 mile ruck took 80 hours, they actually spent a lot of time resting because they had already done a different ruck march just a few days earlier, which is also probably why only 75 of them finished. And luckily for Jake, I assume he was in the stockade the whole time so he was fresh and ready to go lol

My late father in law was a demolition expert in the Korean War. He used to tell stories about the dangers he and the other men went through traveling with jeeps or just backpacks full of explosives . When he got back from Korea and was stateside at a military base he decided to go awol one weekend to meet up with his brother and go drinking all weekend. His brother was a medic in the airforce and was in both WW2 and Korean war. When my father in law retured monday the commander of course, screamed in my father in laws face . It was cold with snow on the ground and my father in law still being half drunk and half hungover hit the commander and he went down in a pile of snow . They busted my father in laws rank back down so low a while later when his time was up for service they had to give him a promotion so he could get out with an honorable discharge . From the stories I've heard he would have fit right in with Jake's group. Must be something the demolition men have in common. He had several run-ins with the MP's . My husband after he passed was able to contact the military and get duplicates of his dads medals of wich there were several. He had a sense of humor that was off the chart. He is greatly missed everyday and from day 1 I was not just his daughter in law I was a daughter to him with him often taking my side over his son. God bless!

Kabir most soldiers had their mess kits with them so if there was a hot meal they could get some. The most common cooking vessel was the helmet - perfect for soups, stews, and frying things in. There's a movie called Battleground that illustrates it. They'd cook over a small fire, sometimes underground. The movie the Dirty Dozen is based upon McNiece.

5:26 I worked with a Modern Day Jake when I was in the USMC... I was the Robin to his Batman, and never could have gotten away with the stuff he did lol 😆 But, like you said, dude was just so good at being a Marine, that nobody cared. Like, it was obvious he knew all the rules and regulations better than anybody else, but... He didn’t have time for all that crap. It was generally small things like Walking and Eating at the same time in Uniform... Outside... without a Cover on... while a Lt. salute's him with a confused look on his face as the Screeching of Eagles can be heard off in the distance and the Marine Corps Hymn starts to play... as we keep walking.

They did the 136 miles in four days. Just a short time prior to this they had completed a 600 man march in full combat load, 115 miles in 31 hours. I once had to walk 5 miles to the house and back to carry tools out when my truck broke down. Another time just a couple miles carrying a pair of car batteries. I still can't imagine what it took for them to make those numbers.

this was WWII times were different and no one was to concerned about civilians. .... of course no one wants to kill civilians but a certain amount of collateral damage was expected. .. if we.could have fought the same way in Afghanistan that war would have lasted about 20 minutes instead of 20 years and a stealmate

I know someone that was in the 82nd Airborne. He did 1 tour of duty in Iraq and 2 in Afghanistan. Although the last one wasn't with an Airborne unit. Said he didn't want to see his friends get hurt from jumping anymore. He was taken care of after his service. Better then most. Uncle Sam understands, higher risk jobs come with extra benefits.

You are an infantryman and in his case an Airborne infantryman you improvise! You scramble the eggs in your steel helmet over a fire. The movie made about the filthy thirteen was called The Dirty Dozen. The character that represents McNeice was Lee Marvin and his character's name is Major Riechman. It's an interesting rendition of McNeice's story. Check out the films The Battle of The Bulge and Battleground both are about Bastogne the first one is newer than the first. No the military doesn't give you a day off between operations. Technically you are on duty 20 hours a day and you're lucky in times of combat to get that.

You cut off the interview with Jake at the end. It's interesting listening to younger people doing historical reviews. You asked if the people were told an attack was coming. No. They are in a war-torn country, little or no power, personal radios are rare, information takes days or weeks to be spread. You can't equate our technology to what was available at the time. Even now, in a war zone, the average person finds out about an attack when the first rounds hit.

People often forget that a lot of the *”British food sucks”* opinions that came back home with our soldiers of that time-is because they were sent there and were experiencing the “local English cuisine” after the UK had already been under heavy rationing, for multiple years. Most people/places/military stations literally didn’t HAVE the spices and ingredients that they typically use-available to them (or not in the quantities they needed). ❤

Yup. If you had no mess gear and there was hot chow you got no hot chow. Steel pots made for a great stew/soup pot or fry pan. There's a scene from the movie battleground where one of them is cooking eggs in his helmet when he has to go out on guard duty, puts the steel pot on with egg dripping out.

I never thought seasoning ground beef with vinegar (Wimpy Burger Bar) was a good idea. They predated McDonalds in London in the 60s and 70s. I'm not sure if they survived. I did really like fish and chips as long as the cod was really fresh.

The army standard is 12 miles (19km) in 3 hours, or 4mi an hour. So 136mi would take 34 hours. If you can do eight hours a day, that's 3 days 2 hours. While doing research, I ran across a list of his awards. Somehow, out of all the crazy adventures he embarked on, apparently, he managed to get a good conduct medal 😮🤔🤨

Hi Kabir, Pathfinder was very dangerous, but so was the job of messenger. In WW1 the Germans would send out 5 soldiers each bearing the same message. That was the only way that they could be sure the message got through, as the death rate of messengers was 80%. Corporal Adolph Hitler was one such messenger, and earned the Iron Cross first class twice, something almost unheard of for a corporal. Both times it was, ironically, awarded by Jewish officers.

Jake grew up dirt poor. He likely went barefoot most of the time. Even when hunting. His feet were hardened by life. That's my guess how he made that march without a blister.

Nick has another channel called the Fat Files. It's more stories that aren't military related. Also, don't cut his videos. The ads and closing are usually worth the watch. Plus, there's often footage included at the very end. Edit: your comment at the very end about how if Jake hadn't been in the military, the world could be a very different place. It absolutely would be a very different place, today. The story from Holland, while keeping the continuity of the story, was just him showing off. That aside, Jake was the lynchpin for most of the Allied forces efforts being successful. What would have happened at the bridge if Jake and his men hadn't disobeyed a direct order? That kind of No Fucks Given was necessary. Once he was on the ground, he was able to immediately find the winning play, and he was going to see it done, even if he was ordered not to. And he had earned the loyalty and trust he had from the men following him. Higher up, the commanding officers weren't the ones getting shot at, so they did not have the respect or trust of the enlisted men. Even in a formal military command structure, trust is key. That's what makes a military strong.

Still lots of those families around here Dude. Still plenty with 6-9 kids.... But we're all farming families. Grow it & raise it .. sell it or eat it! So much easier to do when 85% of your food comes from the land you live on or the rivers & forests around you 😉 Just fish alone i just put another 1000 3-5 inch trout in my pond this spring. $1.50 each.. once matured each one will feed 3-4 at my dinner table. From "Caught to Cooked" in 20 minutes total. It doesn't get any more fresh than that; nor nutrition. They are fed on natural insects each night drawn in by low hanging LED bulbs over the water & 100% natural ground & meal worm pellets (pure natural protein) I have a deal with my neighbours (2) .. I trade trout & poultry & eggs for Beef on one side and Pork on the other side; plus we regularly trade off excess vegetables & fruit. I purchased 12 Hybrid Trees that started producing last year.. each tree produces 5 different fruit (Mac & Golden apples, Bartlett Pears, Red Plums, Black Cherries) Add in my wild caught proteins (Moose, Deer & variety of fish) You can certainly keep a family fed quite cheaply & easily! Go out for 6 Sea Bass and put 170-200 Lbs of incredible White Fish in the freezer.. Myself, wife and a kid.. allowed 2 each. The problem with the world today is everybody moving into concrete jungles and rely on PURCHASING everything. Get off the beaten path and get some land at the same price or cheaper... And really LIVE free; on the earth that God granted us to prosper on.

You know, however, in the United States, with women being unable to choose what to do with their own bodies, we may not be able to use contraceptives in the future to avoid an abortion.
