Marines fall under the department of the Navy. The two branches have very close ties. All corpsman (medics), dental technicians, and chaplains are naval personnel assigned to be on “The Green Side”. Various medals are shared by the two branches.

It's Marines like Sergeant Major Daly whose stories we'd hear and learn about in boot camp. Earning the Medal of Honor doesn't automatically mean you're retired. A great number are awarded posthumously. A Marine I served with was a Korean war veteran and his younger brother was awarded the Medal for his actions in Vietnam at 19 posthumously. Another famous World War II Marine was John Basilone, from New Jersey. He earned his at Guadalcanal and was ordered back to the states to help sell war bonds. He got tired of that and begged to get back in the action. He ended landing on Iwo Jima and during that battle was killed. His actions earned him the Navy Cross Back in 1985 while attending school at Quantico I met Lieutenant Colonel Wesley Fox who as a First Sergeant earned the Medal in 1969 in Vietnam.

The thing with Daly vs 200 rebels.... thinking a machine gun makes it a done deal... is forgetting 3 things... 1. This was 1901. Machine guns were BARELY developed at the time. It's not like Daly was standing there like Rambo with an M60. Early machine guns were slow firing, and prone to jamming and overheating. By 1914 they were MUCH better. 2. Dan Daly was an 18 year old kid in his first major battle, alone. 3. The Boxers, thinking themselves impervious, gave ZERO fks and would have just bum-rushed the building... all at once... eventually there would be just the right break in gunfire that he'd get overwhelmed, it was just a matter of time and rebels. The safe money would have been on the Boxers, not the 18 year old with the prototype machine gun. So for Pvt Daly to have managed to defeat a swarm.of 200 zealots was as amazing as The Fat Electrician makes it sound. Medal of Honor well earned.

Well the other thing about that fight is when you have even a mounted machine gun, which that probably was, you don't really need to go "to" the enemy because the enemy decided to go slappers only in a gun fight. Meaning they're funneling towards you and tripping over each others "ragdolls" the further they proceed. They'd also be dropping their weapons for those behind them to trip over. They're going to naturally form up into a shape that's advantageous for a mounted machine gun because they have to go to him. I'd imagine he might have had a Browning 1895. 400 rpm isn't speedy, but it's a lot faster than a bolt action. There's just a lot of things that were going for him in that particular battle that really can't be replicated ever again. I'm not saying it's less impressive, in fact it's the opposite. He held his own and he was dealt a royal flush of coincidental luck of circumstances.

Machine guns were not "BARELY" invented around that time. The Puckle Gun (a flintlock machine gun) was invented in 1718. Machine gun prototypes started in the 1680's. For that time period (early 1900's) a more "modern" machine gun the Maxim machine gun was built in the 1880's.

I would have to say he was most likely using a browning automatic 1895 tho it’s possible it could have been a maxim Gatling gun. But considering it would’ve been extremely difficult and time consuming to attempt to reload a maxim by yourself whilst being rushed by several dozen (depending on how many were killed before he ran dry) fanatical zealots I’d say it’s much more likely he was using a Browning automatic which was much easier to and quicker to reload.

Think about this Dan Daly at Bellow Wood was not put in for 1 MOH but 2. 1st was for taking the machine gun emplacement (which by chance was the same thing Alvin York was given his MOH for in WWI) the 2nd was for the charge he lead. Dan Daly was in fact nominated for 4 MOH's.

The great thing with that scene from Indiana Jones, is that it was totally improv. They originally had a full on fight scene written in the script, but Harrison Ford wasn't feeling well that day and proposed that since he had a gun, why didn't he just pull it out and shoot him? Thus, the iconic scene was born.

He received the Navy cross because the Marines are part of the Navy. Their specific training and methods are designed to be coordinated with Naval forces to a much greater extent than regular Army forces are. The very first US Marines were just sailors getting a bit rowdy with some pirates off the North African coast. (Fat Electrician has a video about that as well.) This is the "Shores of Tripoli" from the USMC anthem.

The Marine Corps was created Nov 10, 1775. The requirements were 1) experience at Sea, 2) you had to own your own Rifle, and 3) You had to be an expert shot; the Enlistment bonus was a leather jack, and a round of Ale. We were founded in Tun Tavern, Philadelphia PA, and due to an administrative fluke are the oldest of Services never having had to change our name from Corps of Marines, while the fledgling US Army and Navy had to be re-estblished after the authorization of a Standing Federal Army and Navy. The First Naval Special Operations were in the Caribbean during the Revolution in which Marines conducted raids on Nassau in the Bahamas, and not the Operations in Derna.

1:04 He is actually incorrect here by saying “one of only two marines to win the Medal of Honor twice”. There are actually 7 US Maines to have been awarded the US Medal of Honor twice. They are; Smedley D. Butler Daniel J. Daly Louis Cukela Charles F. Hoffman John J. Kelly Matej Kocak and John H. Pruitt With the last awarding of a second Medal of Honor being for actions in World War I. Also, there has never been an awarding of a third Medal of Honor. There is now a law that prohibits the awarding of a second physical Medal of Honor. You can still win multiple Medals of Honor but only one physical medal will be given to the recipient. This one physical medal will represent any multiple awardings.

As an 0331 (M60E3 gunner) I can confirm just how..... um... ____ it is to storm any machine gun position. Depending on the caliber the range is about 800-1200 yards (900-1100 meters). You either have to be invisible, so sneaky that a ninja would be like "DAYUM!!!", HELLA lucky, BALLSY, or a combination of all of them. These days warfare is a little different because of technology allowing other options of taking out a machine gun position without having to gamble with the odds of of surviving such a decision.

Some context for the kung fu guys thinking they could resist bullets, is that there are styles that develop a resistance to blades (you can see examples of this where Shaolin monks demonstrate such things in videos). So, I can imagine them thinking if it works for blades, it will work for bullets. The cure for ignorance is learning, and they learned something in the boxer rebellion. I have a few observations, but the one that is most important and will therefore mention here is that Marines ARE NOT soldiers. They are MARINES. Same as there are no "former Marines" or "Ex-Marines", we are Marines forever, and even then when we die we just go to hell to regroup for a little while before reporting for duty at Marine Barracks, Pearly Gates. It even says so in the Marine's Hymn: "... if the Army and the Navy ever look on heaven's scenes they will find the streets are guarded by UNITED STATES MARINES". Oh, and earning the Medal of Honor doesn't mean you have to retire. Basically, you get your "attaboy", now get back to work. We fall in for PT at 0530 tomorrow, so you'd better not have too much of a hangover. Semper Fi. EDIT: Okay, one more... I cringe every time someone says "PTSD". I myself served fairly recently, from 1986 until 2010. When they coined the term "PTSD", all of us were asking "what the hell is that?", then they started diagnosing it for all sorts of stupid things, even things unrelated to combat, and it's even been used as an excuse for all sorts of civilian crap. So in World War One, combat psychological trauma was called shell shock, in World War Two they talked about the fog of war, during Vietnam it was the thousand-yard stare, and so on. I'm a veteran of Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom, and "PTSD" still doesn't impress me... in fact, it's kinda like a put-down. Sheesh. And don't mess with our docs (Navy Corpsmen assigned to Marine ground units... hell, all Marine units!); we'll probably kill you for it. 'Nuff said. Where's my beer?

A Colt 1911 can carry at most 9 rounds, and he took 14 men prisoner with it. If the Germans had rushed him, Daly wouldn't have been able to get all 14 without reloading, and after killing the officer he at most 8 rounds left in the gun.

If you are a U.S. Marine, you are in the U.S. Navy also, the USMC is a branch of the U.S. Navy, so yes he is most certainly not the first and far from the last U.S. Marine to ever get awarded the Navy Cross. see the U.S. Marines are the ground troops of the U.S. Navy, and as such, there are a few professions that are non existant in the U.S. Marine Corps, #1. ANYTHING medical, when Marines go into combat, they also take with them Navy Corpsmen to attend to their medical needs, it is Navy Doctors and surgeons that treat serious injuries and sicknesses, It is Navy Dentists who care for their teeth, there is also NO LEGAL personnel in the USMC, that is handled by the Navy JAG Corps, there is also no Marines in the investigative unit of the U.S. Navy, and their meals are prepared by Navy culinary Specialists, by taking on all of this, the Navy is able to ensure that Marines can focus on their primary objective, FIGHTING!this is why the Navy and Marine Corps work so closely together, In the U.S. Military, it is said that EVERY service member has 2 jobs, in the Army you are whatever profession that the Army has trained you for, but you are also an infantryman, in the Marine Corps, you are whatever the Navy or Marine Corps has trained you for, and you are a rifleman, in the Navy, you are whatever the Navy has trained you for, and you are a firefighter, I have not A single clue how that translated in the USAF, becase as far as I know, they barely do the job the Air Force has trained them for and nothing else, and what the USAF has trained them for is 1/20th of what the Navy trains it's people for.

That is why stolen valor is so horrendous. You have people who serve their country and die and then you have fools to pretend. I agree, there are certain people born to live and it is only known later how heroic or amazing they were.

Hollywood is currently too busy making woke garbage to be interested in making a movie of a true hero like Day Daly.

You'd think a pension would do something, but you're forgetting that he's living it out in the interwar period. That would be the Great Depression time for the USA, meaning whatever pension he got probably got him a can of soup and a half loaf of bread. Now given that would have been 10 years after his two "2nd place" medals were awarded him, but still he would have gone from any decent pension (if it was a thing back then) to that pension being worth spit. You finally found out what made him so gangster. He's so ball'n that he force the entire nation of the USA to change their rules on military awards. You don't do that unless you've really said your piece AT the US government via actions. 2 videos of the Fat Electricians you should smash into 1 video. The USS Barb and the USS O' Bannon. They're two 5 minute videos about the insanity that is the US Navy and the ships we sail. Precursor to get you interested. USS Barb, WWII US Submarine credited with sinking a freight train. USS O' Bannon, WWII US Destroyer credited with the sinking of an enemy war vessel with the assistance of potatoes. Watch and react to the videos to find out the stories behind both. While your at it, you can also watch the one about the SeaBee's great Beer Robbery that involved a train. To elaborate on that, the SeaBees are essentially the Navy's engineering sector. They specialize in building stuff the Navy may need on land or on sea. The beer robbery via train, that's for you to watch and learn.

Pensions were never much, and for WW1 soldiers, it was pretty abysmal, even for highly decorated ones.

Hi Kabir! The Navy and Marines are closely related. Originally the Marines were stationed on ships. If you go to Annapolis, the navy service academy, you have the option of being commissioned an officer in either the Navy or the Marines upon graduation.

Until relatively recently....For a LIVING U.S. Marine to earn the Medal of Honor was damn near impossible. As it SHOULD BE! For Marine to go "above and beyond" their expected duty is a high bar (And still should be) indeed!

PTSD was not a thing until weak men started to join the military. I promise you these men did not get PTSD, they were not so weak that just seeing what humans are capable of would negatively affect their minds. It is not like they are witnessing an Alien environment they are just seeing what humans have done throughout history Men fight and kill each other in war it is that simple. Don't take me wrong, I'm not saying they did not have emotion or get sad about losing friends or teammates I'm saying there was no way in hell they would let it negatively affect their mind or life, There are real men, men of honor and pride.

Its disputed whether or not that dan daly was actually the one that said "do want to live forever" and by the time america joined the war most of the german veterans still alive were fighting on the eastern front against russia. But other then that dan daly's story is still bad ass. Its the 1900s by the time of the boxer rebellion
