Everyone else: "I can't believe you built this!" American: "I can't believe we lost this!"

This is why you NEVER tell us in America a lie about what your side can do. We will make sure to create something that can do it better, or able to make it obsolete. And THAT is why we had the F15, the F22, and other things. We were building things to combat what we were told can be done by others...

Who needs a tank when you have dirt and heavy equipment? That was brilliant.

Yup. And chicken wire, fence, helped to win WW1. Barbed wire would slow down an assault because troops would have to stop and cut it to get through. When we Americans showed up, we brought chicken wire. Unroll some and two men would carry it. When they came to the barbed wire, they would throw it over the barbed wire and the rest of the men would just run over it.

The M-1 Abrams tank, depending on what version and if it's fully loaded with fuel and ammo, weighs between 60-75 tons. The M-1A1 Abrams can go up to 70 mph forward or reverse on pavement and it has a 120mm gun. 70 mph. It can go faster than a Hummvee going down a steep hill or a Bradley or a Stryker or an MRAP (the Stryker and MRAP Buffalo are the current battle taxis in the US Army). They usually install a governor to limit the top speed to 45 so they won't outrun the accompanying infantry vehicles and wear out the transmission, sometimes the governors go missing during maintenance. Oops. :)

@wittsullivan81306 ай бұрын
It sounds like while they were designing the new engines, they got better intel about how weak the Siegfried line was and cut their losses. Other tanks used two engines, which led to problems because they either powered one set of tracks and had to be synchronized or one engine would work harder to keep up with the other and wear out or break down more than the other one or they had really complex transmissions which were prone to failure and a nightmare to maintain.
@pyronuke47686 ай бұрын
My favorite tank is the M3 Lee. It looks like it's designers had read a lot about tanks, studied the features of previous tanks in detail, and talked to other designers about what should be involved, but had never actually seen or been in one before. And to be honest that's not too far off from what happened IRL. Now the Sherman had been in development around the same time, but American factories would take some time to tool up so they could build them, so the Lee tank was made as a stopgap by throwing together the most ridiculous looking vehicle ever. The Lee came at a crucial junction when the Allies were in desperate need of tanks and it was the only thing available in large numbers. Despite it's ramshackle appearance it did prove reliable and it got the job done until the Sherman could start showing up. Also it's just really fun to roast it over it's wonky-ass appearance.

I was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds back in the early 70's. I can believe they lost a tank there. The entrances to the base were two 2 lane roads separated by a median which was filled with all kinds of artillery and tanks. They had tanks from world war I to the present day from American and foreign militaries. It was part of the museum. My favorite was "Little David" which was a 36 inch mortar that was going to be used to bombard Japan from the decks of aircraft carriers. Never say never to an American engineer with funding. Or in a crisis. They figured out how to convert the CO2 filters in the command capsule of Apollo 13 to fit into the filters of the LEM, the lunar module, using only expendable materials that the astronauts had on board, even though one was square and the other was round. As the daughter of an aerospace engineer I can tell you those guys are usually very slow, meticulous thinkers. For NASA they knew every inch of what they'd built, and even though different corporations built the two components, that is, the command capsule and the LEM, they all gathered together for the duration of the crisis to get our men home.

I saw that you reacted to people shooting guns in America but did you know there's a range in Miami where you can rent and shoot a .50 sniper rifle or a wide variety of fully-automatic weapons all the way up to belt-fed machineguns ? You might want to react to their video " Machine Gun Experience Lock & Load Miami ". I'd love to go there myself their facility is super-nice - nicer than my house. : /

"Why wouldnt they just use it in all battles?" With armor (in any type, be it worn, carried, or driven) there is always a trade-off 'somewhere'. Thick armor = weight. More weight = harder to move, more exhaustive to carry. The Doom-turtle's problems were: 1) Heavy armor (so it was slow and also took more effort to transport.. a ship that could carry 10 Shermans would only be able to carry 3 or 4 Turtles) 2) Lack of Turret (This gave it the same disadvantage of every other "casemate" / Tank Destroyer fielded by any of the nations of that time. That disadvantage being that to aim right/left, you had to turn the entire tank) 3) Big gun took longer to reload. 4) Like the Tigers for Germany, i believe they also broke down a lot due to the transmissions trying to move the sheer weight of its armor.

Best tank in general is the M1 Abrahams. Check out some vids on it, it's crazy cool. Favorite is the doom turtle here, because it's a lot like me: it's heavy, slow, a complete piece of crap, but it somehow can't die, and it makes that everyone else's problem. Also yes, Americans in general, and especially the American military, work on kind of a dare system. If you tell us that we can't do something, we'll move mountains to prove you wrong. Anything good that comes out of that is just unintended positives.

The 105mm howitzer is, but that was an alliteration. The 105mm rifled gun on the Doom Turtle was a high caliber, high velocity unit closer to a naval gun than a howitzer. It fired projectiles literally twice the muzzle velocity of the M102 105mm that graces the AC-130. Why? Because they wanted the armor piercing capability... The T5 (Doomie's cannon) using AP would punch 7" of RHA angled 30 degrees.... at 1000 yards.

Saw this tank at the armored museum was at Fort Knox, Kentucky. It was a school field trip when I was in about the fifth grade. We had picnic lunches at the park that was just outside the Fort Knox gold bullion reserve fence. Now there are three fences, so we were picnicking in an area that is now within the perimeter of the gold vault. They have since moved the armored school and armored museum to Fort Benning Georgia. The problem with the tank, other than being too big and too slow, is that it did not have a rotating Tur it. They could move the gun up and down, but to move it side to side they had to move the whole tank.
