The US had actually put the forces in Hawaii on alert for war, as it was expected as of late November that the Japanese might attack any day. However, nobody who was in command at Pearl Harbor thought that the Japanese had the capability to attack the way they did, so almost everyone was still caught by surprise even though they were supposed to be on a war footing.

Yes!!! Roosevelt pretty much knew they were going to attack us somehow when we cut off Japan’s oil., I think he kind of did it on purpose, but Japan asked for it because they attacked and then they did another British colony, and when Poland was invaded in September 1939 even President Roosevelt knew that overseas wars were not popular for Americans and he wasn’t going to get into it at the time because we didn’t have the military power or any system set up to militarized why Germany had set up at the time so he fired up operation warp speed in that started the first time in January 1940 and then Donald Trump used it in 2020 during Covid.. Japan did kill a lot of people did a lot of damage, but that attack was essentially a failure, because they did not attack certain structures, and oil depos on Oahu, and they screwed up in some other ways, and their targets in points that Americans just wouldn’t forget or would also put top priority, and Japan did not. Oops!

American damage control, even in WWII was the best in the world. But you cannot stop what happened to the Arizona. Both the Arizona and the Utah are still "moored" in Pearl Harbor. The Arizona is still a n active ship, meaning no ship will carry her name. She is a National Cemetary, and you can visit her for free. However, in order to do so, you must watch a film that hones the fact people are buried there. It is very sobering, but if anyone visits Hawaii, GO TO THE ARIZONA. It is both sad and beautiful. The Oklahoma and Nevada both have memorials on the way to the Missouri (which moored there and is the happier place to visit) on Ford Island. The Utah recently (and finally) got a memorial. You can see her hull sticking out of the water. All this is on an active military base. It is weird to be waiting for the ferry to take you to the Arizona and next to the dock you can see sailors walking on the flat top of a carrier. Or your Pacific Aviation Museum bus has to wait to cross the bridge to Ford Island because said bridge is open to let said carrier into Pearl Harbor. The place seeps of Naval power, both pass and present. Oh, there is a target (cough cough Submarine) from WWII docked there for tours too. But only the Arizona is free. I lived there for 10 years and was stationed at MCB Hawaii.

The Us believed hostilities with Japan were likely and concluded that a formal declaration of war and sighting of the Japanese fleet would preclude an attack. The declaration of war was delayed due to issues of translating at the Japanese embassy and the sightings of the fleet were ignored. (A midget submarine and the air armada were both ignored). It was also Sunday morning in the peacetime Navy pre world war 2. It was because of this the US military is the way it is now.

Several factors relevant to PH readiness: 1. the US was not at war with Japan; 2. PH had not been the Pacific Fleet's main base until 1940 when FDR moved the fleet there; because of this the air defenses on Oahu were still being built up; 3. the air defense guns on most US ships were obsolescent, not adequate for modern planes; 4. using carriers as a large group to overwhelm an island's defenses, as the IJN did, was a unique concept; USN and RN practice was for carriers to operate singly or in pairs against small isolated bases in hit-and-run fashion. IOW, the surprise was not just people being asleep or hung over and ships in a low state of readiness with ammunition locked up, it was a base not fully built up and the IJN doing something no one had thought to try.

If you visit Oahu and travel to Arizona in Pearl, surrounding the memorial is a large leakage of oil. Her hull was full of oil cans when she sunk, now causing her wreckage to leak the black liquid to the surface. She is always leaking oil, seemingly without end. The is known to people as, “The Black Tears of USS Arizona”. As if she now, and will forever, mourn the men that died, as well as cry for the rest of the souls lost on Dec 7th. Making it all the more tragic. I can’t help but sob thinking about it.

Great condensed 'documentary' on the Pearl Harbor attack, and on your reaction too! Also, keep in mind that there was no radar back then, although we did have a new unit on one of the Oahu mountains, but they ignored its input, thinking it was a bunch of B-17's from the mainland, which would have been from an entirely different direction! This just shows their lack of understanding of radar at it infancy. While I have studied WW II for over 4 decades, I did not realize what low percentage their hits were, so this was informative even to me! Again, I loved your reaction, and at the end how you realized what this attacked turned into to get back at the Japanese!

A war memorial was built over the remains of the battleship Arizona which is the grave site of many of those who died on her. I've never been there, but it is a place where many tourists go. I have heard that occasionally oil will leak from the ship and that there is approximately .5 million gallons still in it. To be honest, I still get filled with anger when I think of it. Japan had intended to notify the United States that they were at War just as the attack on Pearl Harbor happened but the Japanese Diplomats were delayed. The attack was a sneak attack and Pearl Harbor was added to the American saying to mean sneak attack. The saying that you got Pearl Harbored. So instead of the attack causing the United States to give up the sneak attack made the United States want to win even more and to add that attack to its memory. I remember on 9 11 when the United States was attacked that it was said the United States had been Pearl Harbored again.

The dive bomber carried general purpose, high explosive, bombs rather than armor piercing bombs. Battleships had deck armor that would have limited damage; cruisers did not and thus were the better targets. The PH attack immobilized the USN battleship fleet, but these were, by the same attack, rendered obsolescent. The were too slow by ~10 knots to steam with the USN's carriers. The carriers were untouched, and the were a good number of ships that could keep pace with and support the carriers, cruisers and destroyers. Within a very few months USN carriers were raiding Japanese bases and fought at the Battle of the Coral Sea, turning back a planned Japanese invasion of Port Moresby, New Guinea.

After Pearl Harbor, Japan would soon meet the bane of their navy on the Pacific: the USS Enterprise (CV-6). To say she desired revenge for Pearl, many Americans, other sunk ships, and eventually, her two sisters, Yorktown and Hornet, was a vast understatement. She was literally too angry to die. At least three times, the Japanese believed they'd sunk her, and three times, she emerged from the hellfire and mist, still afloat. For the better part of the war in the Pacific, she took on Japan as the only US naval carrier left. Her spiteful refusal to die, and carry on, seemingly out of vengeance, baffled the Imperial Japanese Navy. Thus, they named her "The Grey Ghost". She would go on to fight the IJN from Pearl, to the gates of Japan. After the loss of her sisters, her crew put a large sign overlooking the deck. In big, bold letters it said: “ENTERPRISE VS JAPAN”. She would hunt down the IJN all throughout the Pacific, until war’s end.

We were involved in peace talks when they attacked. And they did it on a Sunday morning where there was no planned drills or training, so everyone was sleeping in, or at least still asleep. Now, the talks had been deteriorating for some months, but we were still hopeful. There's a popular theory that the entire Pacific fleet was in anchor so all the older ships could be cannibalized for parts to bolster the Atlantic fleet. And that some people suspected the attack was going to happen. The only reason the entire fleet wasn't destroyed, thanks to some devine intervention, was that the carrier group had to pass through a surprise storm the night before. If the carriers were at anchor, the Japanese probably would've gotten they're six months.

It was Sunday morning, many of the crew were ashore for church, hang over's whatever. The US was still at peace and there were systemic problems with organization of defense of the fleet while in harbor. While in the Harbor the Army is responsible for defending the ships, and so it was the armies AA guns, air fields, lookouts etc. The entire attack took less than an hour and a half to execute. The US was caught with it's pants down because on paper it was suicide to attack the US(a similar thing happened with the USSR and US thinking Germany would never attack the Soviets). The US was 2/3's of the wars entire oil and refined fuel production, at one point providing the USSR with the majority of it's oil even though Russia was the second largest producer in the world. A rough economic breakdown of the war has the US producing HALF of all wartime production. There was a US dockyard that by itself produced more destroyers than Japan in the war. Probably a third of the crews were on shore for leave, going to church, hung over from Saturday night etc. Ammunition was behind locks because the US was at peace, but even then some men beat into the lockers to get the ammunition as it was faster than waiting/getting the keys. The ships had guns firing with-in minutes of being woken up to the attack. Making it from being woken in your bunk to you battle stations with-in minutes is insane. The various ship bands or a shore based band for smaller ships, were playing Morning Colors which is the ceremony where the Ensign (Countries Flag) is raised in the morning to music. Some of the bands finished playing while under-fire and with wounded before going to battle stations. The entire USS Arizona Band was killed. The water was on fire with fuels burning and many men took whatever boat they could find to pull out to survivors or attempt to get out to their ships. The US Nevada got underway in less than an hour with her captain and executive officer ashore. The Manual says this should take closer to 10 hours to light the 12 boilers from the 1-2 that provide power while in port. The Destroyer USS Aylwin got underway with only 4 young officers, none of whom had been out of the academy for a year. She was ordered out of the harbor to search for enemies. Her captain and officers took a private yacht and tried to get the ship to slow down but the Young officers followed orders and went to sea. The officers got to the vessel 36 hours later. When asked, the Captain said he couldn't be more proud of his men for executing their correct orders. Duds are shells that don't explode. The British had an issue with this at the Battle of Jutland in WW1. Duds can happen for many reasons, the chemical explosives being old and detonator failure are probably the most common. The US didn't think Japan would fight because it was an unwinnable war for Japan. Japanese leaders had the win condition of the US accepting a white peace. Japan would get what it wants, then give the US back all it's territory and the US would accept this because American's can't stomach war. It was a straight up racists excuse used to justify to themselves that they had a win condition. The US was just as guilty of racism. The US didn't believe Japan could launch more than a single large military option across water at one time (the US was partially right), the Japanese successful launched 8 simultaneous major military offenses with-in hours of each other on December 7th/8th. Pearl Harbor was just one of those attacks. The US was partially right because Japan did not have the merchant fleet to sustain those long offenses spread out across the Pacific. But the US was guilty of underestimating the Japanese because of Racism.

After the attack on Pearl Harbour, the US launched a raid of their own directly at Tokyo. The main purpose was to basically make them bleed so they knew they weren't invincible. 16 B-25s attacked Tokyo with negligible damage. However, the attack caused Japan to route supplies back to the main land, and they were defensive instead of offensive for much of the war.

Dud: a bomb (or artillery shell) that fails to explode. As for response? Well, first, it was Sunday morning. Most were off duty, with no small number preparing for Sunday church services. Second, an early warning radar installation actually reported the first wave incoming. The officer taking the report from the (brand new) radar site informed them they were seeing an inboard flight of B-17s. Third...who, in peacetime, expects to be attacked??? The first wave got by simply because all our guys were standing around, gawking at the air and sea and asking themselves "WTF?" for an initial ninety or so seconds before even thinking about mounting a defense. Yet, us Amies got lucky...very lucky. Inaccurate targeting, duds, and no doubt jitters caused 80% of ordinance dropped to be ineffective. Our carriers were out on exercise. We did actually spot the mini-subs and target them before they could do harm. And lastly, as the Fat Electrician would say "Don't F*** with America's Boats, because you will die trying"...and four years later, Imperial Japan would be no more.

The lack of US readiness was due to the fact the US wasn't at war with anyone, they were actively negotiating with Japanese envoys, considered Pearl Harbor unassailable, and figured if Japan did attack, the Phillipines would be their most likely target (turned out the Phillipnes, Malaya, Hong Kong were simultaneously attacked). The fortuitous absence of the USN carriers was due to the fact they were delivering aircraft to outlying US bases in an attempt to enhance readiness. The damage inflicted was marginal, as the battleships and aircraft taken out were obsolete, the harbor facilities were largely i.ntact

A DUD is an ineffective bomb or missile, and it hits and doesn’t go off. There were some soldiers in World War II and the allies were fighting in the battle of the Bulge and these German missiles, right in front of them, and sometimes 5 feet away from their legs, and they were duds. The (Americans- with Easy company - Band of Brothers) & guys just about had a heart attack but thankfully they were duds and they didn’t explode.. This attack occurs somewhere around 730 or so in the morning on Sunday . Nobody was going to be up in the air on the weekend and especially on a Sunday because everybody went to church pretty much then & it was a great time in America when stores were usually closed on the weekends, but all of them were closed on Sundays, and sadly too much capitalism lead to the destruction of everything being closed on Sunday and it’s good to have some restaurants open but it’s also gotten better over the years because a lot of grocery stores have closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas and pretty much told people “ to get your shit done before the holiday”. I think that’s great because Thanksgiving and Christmas should be the two days families should be together and usually them all their clothes on New Year’s but grocery stores are not. You gotta realize we had no radar back then and without radar. It was impossible to know these people are coming. . Now great Britain was in the process of inventing and discovering radar through signals sometime around 1940 or 1941 and they knew some things just before an after the battle of Britain but Americans didn’t have it and Britain and I just discovered radar around 19 fortyish, 1941 and, then after Pearl Harbor occurred, American Navy band that didn’t have anything to do during wartime so they were screwing around and figuring out how to decode messages!! Americans were decoding, and we had the Indians and the native American “ wind talkers” And because these men knew how to speak their own native tongue, they were able to pick up Japanese language to some degree and able to decipher a lot of it, which is really cool because I didn’t bring the languages would’ve been similar ., they had some things that were similar, but it was enough for the wind talkers to be very necessary and decoding was something Americans discovered because the band was able to pick up on certain beats and sounds, and they would plug it together and they were able to successfully decode and started turning the water around for the Americans by the battle of midway in June or July 1942’ that was Japan’s six month mark and they lost big time!! The tuba player was the head guy working in Pearl Harbor on this decoding business. I was hilarious because he worked running around and how shoes and a house robe over his uniform because it was so cold in the basement where they stayed.. Americans and British did what they did that and they got together and the British taught Americans how to use radar and pick up radar signals on the Americans overtime part of the British how to decode so we shared!! But at seven or 8 o’clock in the morning, and even on a Sunday, no airplanes were going to be in the air training and they may have on an air in that like if they were having an airshow, but nothing other than that and this was December. You may have been 70° that morning but he didn’t matter because it was on a Sunday and the Navy guys were really the superheroes because they were jumping on the Conners on ships that has been hit in the ships that have not been hit and they were firing at the Japanese airplanes and one guy who was a Navy cook got on a big gun and just started blowing the hell are these Japanese in the air and he must’ve shut down about 10 pilots but he got the medal of honor for that..
@sabrecatsmiladon7380 Жыл бұрын
The attack was actually far more of a failure than success as the Japanese sank several OLD battleships. The pilots went trophy hunting (sinking BBs) instead of destroying as much as they could. We all know they left the oil depot and dry dock untouched. Had they destroyed the Dry dock, that means very little could be done in repairs. They didnt need to sink the old BBs as in Dec 1941, the Japanese navy could have easily taken out the BBs had they sailed out of Pearl. They were significantly superior in Naval engagements at THAT time, as the Japanese had been at War for 4 years and were very seasoned. Had they taken MIDWAY in 1941 too, destroyed the oil tanks and the dry dock, things would have been very dire and the War would have lasted longer in the pacific theater. The USA was going to win, no doubt, but maybe add 1-2 years more? This would have most likely reduced the majority of supplies/troops to fight Germany.

There goal wasn't to destroy a bunch of stuff, there goal was to sink the Carriers in the harbor entrance rendering the Pacific Fleet immobilized and weakened and thus unable to aid U.S. forces on Wake, Midway, Guam and most importantly the Philippines.

This was the biggest mistake Japan ever made. And to think that them attacking us would make us not want to fight them because we would be in so much fear please!!!!!!!!

President Franklin Roosevelt, December 8, 1941.speech in full the morning after Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the Senate, and of the House of Representatives: Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack. It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace. The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu. Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya. Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong. Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam. Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands. Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island. And this morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island. Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation. As Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory. I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us. Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger. With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph -- so help us God. I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire.

Quite literally one of the worst mistakes Japan ever made. Why did they think touching the boats would make the US back down? Since when has that ever worked for anyone? So sad that people died over this.

Pearl Harbor caught us by surprise. So did 9/11. That’s why we have the best military in the world now and no healthcare.

Dud rate would refer to the bombs not being affective. For example a simple firework once lit at the wick and not actually exploding which is called a dud. The firework was a dud. So this dud rate is a rate of non effective bombs or explosions.

Right. They successively struck the target, but the bomb did not explode.
