At my local pet store, the checkout lines are near the entrance/exit, and one of the check out people usually welcomes each shopper as they enter the store. Same thing at smaller, boutique type places. So used to this that I would never have expected it to be shocking for people from other places.

Perhaps the hardest thing for Europeans and other foreigners to understand is most laws from liquor laws to homicide are state laws and can vary sometimes wildly from state to state. It is state laws that affect most Americans day to day - not federal / nationwide law. As others have said - liquor laws vary enormously by state. I’ve lived in 6 states. Most allowed you to buy beer/wine/alcohol in any grocery store. But NY was beer at grocery while its wine and liquor at privately run liquor stores. Oregon was beer and wine at groceries but hard liquor only at state owned stores. Remember - the federal government has limited, enumerated powers and all other lawmaking is left to the states. Each state has a sovereign government with a legislature and Governor heading an executive branch and its own judiciary. Alligators are ubiquitous in Florida and Louisiana but also common in other southeastern states. I’ve had my closest encounters in Louisiana, South Carolina (on a golf course), and Florida. Gas prices vary by state and even within a state. Yes oil producing states can be lower but state taxes and state environmental regs often play as big or a bigger part in prices. The three lowest avg prices for regular gas right now is Mississippi the lowest ($2.749 a US gallon), then Tennessee ($2.758) the 2nd lowest and Texas the 3rd lowest ($2.759). The highest three are California ($4.769), then Hawaii ($4.635), then Washington state ($4.152). But I can tell you the closest gas station to us in a Seattle suburb is $4.49 right now. I’m old enough to remember gas being under a buck a gallon when I first started driving in 1992.
@JohnMcDonald-ef5gzАй бұрын
@mikecarew8329 True that. Many a long time ago on a trip to North Carolina I found out what a ''dry county'' is and what a ''wet county'' is. One you can buy booze and the other you can't. If you're in the dry county you have to go to the wet county. So much for the corner bar.

Gas stations have convenience stores attached to them, if you’re paying cash for gas you pay inside there. The convenience store has all sorts of items, soda pop, milk, beer, snacks, self care items like Tylenol, some have a deli area where you can get a sandwich or even some have fried chicken. Some states require you to buy alcoholic beverages in dedicated liquor stores, some are state run, but most states you can buy it in the grocery store, wine and hard alcohol too. Greeting customers isn’t unusual, most Walmart’s still have a greeter stationed by the doors. Servers in restaurants are friendly and do greet you almost as soon as you’re seated, bring water and menus. Some areas of the country you have to fumigate for termites or carpenter ants.

It depends what state you’re in. Some states you can buy wine and beer in supermarkets but not hard liquor and have to go to special liquor stores. In NYC only beer might be in the supermarkets and there were independent owned - not state run - liquor stores where you buy wine and hard liquor like whiskey, rum, vodka, gin, etc. The whole thing with the state run hard liquor stores is a left-over from prohibition where some kept very strict restriction on hard liquor for decades after prohibition was repealed in the early 1930s. I live in northern Virginia and you have to go to a state run store to buy hard liquor but can buy beer and wine in grocery stores and some pharmacy stores that sell beverages. However in DC they have independently run liquor stores. And Maryland, which is also next to DC has different rules, too. It’s confusing.

Connecticut was like NY. Oregon you can buy beer and wine at the grocery but can buy liquor only at state owned stores. Washington state you can buy anything at the grocery. Pennsylvania and New Jersey have a lot of restrictions and funny regulations. Pennsylvania was particularly strange for a long time. To buy beer, you had to go to a distributor (and they were all over the place) but had to buy a case. For wine and spirits you had to go to a state store, which is a Commonwealth run business. However, the law was recently relaxed to enable stores that had a place where one could site down and drink, could see wine, beer, and spirits. So a whole bunch of grocery stores (supermarkets) created dedicated places with tables. New Jersey, you can only buy alcohol from alcohol stores, breweries, wineries, and of course regular bars (pubs). Many states however, any store can sell alcohol provided they can be licensed.

The states right along the Atlantic coast from north to south are Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, (Pennsylvania isn’t on the coast but on the Delaware River separating it from New Jersey), Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and finally Florida’s east coast. Florida’s west coast is on the Gulf of Mexico. Going west all the other states on the Gulf of Mexico are Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and finally Texas which borders Mexico, which makes up the rest of the Gulf Coast. 4 states are on the Pacific Ocean from north to south: Alaska, which is bordered by Canada and is separated from the rest of the US (US bought it from Russia in 1867 because Russia didn’t want to sell it to the Brits who they had been at war with during the Crimean War), Washington state (so as not to be confused with Washington DC), Oregon, and California. Lastly you have Hawaii which is over 2500 miles away from Southern California in the South Pacific.

Cheryl, bless your heart. Thurston started off by referencing “The Carolinas,” (which is accurate), then mentioned South Carolina, (no problems here), then wondered about proximity to the coast, (good thinking), then landed on “Carolina.” I’m pretty confident he swapped in his mind a different pair of states-one of which is NOT on the coast, and the other of which IS on the coast, but has no cardinal direction in its name-specifically, West Virginia and Virginia. It’s pretty easy to see how the mind could conflate these pairs. Thurston knows a lot more about U.S. geography than most U.S. citizens. And he has no real need or reason to know anything about the States. So maybe you’d like to consider cutting him a tiny bit of slack. Or perhaps you’d like to demonstrate your prowess with geography by rattling off the counties of England from memory. There are only 48, which is two fewer than U.S. states, so you should have no difficulty. Okay, go! Or maybe I should say something helpful to you like you did to him. Let’s see. How about, “Go read a book!” No, I would never say such a thing. That might come off as rude. So I’ll forebear. Cheers!

To tell someone from another country to, “Look at a map!,” implies that the person is an idiot for making such a rudimentary mistake because, “aKshUaLly, cLeArlY EvERyoNe sHouLd KnoW tHat wAs wRonG.” This kind of arrogance is the epitome of “the Ugly American” who glides through life thinking that everyone else should know everything about the U.S., while simultaneously being blithly ignorant of the rest of the world’s peoples, cultures, geographies, and histories. People should be called out for bad behavior. I wasn’t mean. I just mirrored Cheryl’s comments back at her in a facetious way that highlighted her discourteousness. But I’m pretty sure she can take a gentle ribbing too. Or do you need to rescue her, Mr. Knight?

@@whyme7996 I’m not suggesting that Thurston was hurt. He’s got thick skin and he’s been dealt much worse. And I’m certainly no white knight. I’m confident that he could not care less. However, I care very much about how Americans treat others from around the world who are expressing curiosity and interest in the United States and its culture. Beer is sold every where. The laws say you can’t have it opened in the vehicle. You can transport it home, etc.
@evilproducer01Ай бұрын
To be fair, different states have different laws. Some states allow counties and municipalities to determine if alcohol can be sold at all. For instance, I believe Indiana has some dry counties.

@@evilproducer01 Right, but most states don’t allow open containers in the car. Louisiana allows it, I believe.
@evilproducer01Ай бұрын
@@Kenyon712 that’s interesting about Louisiana if that is true. I was mainly referring to beer being available everywhere. I should have been more clear.

Beer is sold in all gas stations across the US. Also both Carolinas are on the East Coast....both face the Atlantic ocean.
@eyzminАй бұрын
no it is not, many states do not allow it or have distributor laws, like PA, where most gas stations do not have it because it is a big hassle
