Perfect interpretation of the meaning, that was almost a perfect description of the show. Also, to answer your question earlier, he said first time in 13 years because they hadn't completed in finals (top 12) for 13 years. During the final weekend of the season, all the corps from across the country meet in Indianapolis for a three day, finals competition. During the first day, all the corps compete. The second day, the top 30 or so compete. On the final day, the top twelve groups compete for the final scores. So for a while, the troopers were unable to make it to that final day of competition. In 2022 however, they finally made it back into the competition. I got to be at the finals day in 2022 and I can say this show was so much better live!!

This show is actually apart of a TRILOGY that the Troopers have set up. 2022 Voracious being the first, in 2023 “To Lasso the Sun” is the sequel, and this year’s upcoming 2024 production being “Dance with the Devil.” It follows humanities reach for power. I recommend you watch 2023 and eventually 2024!!!
@croatiancowboy7 ай бұрын
Yeah 2022 is supposed to be The Greed of Man, 2023 is like The Ambition of Man, or something like that, right? And we have yet to see the 2024 program but obviously Dance with the Devil has some very clear-cut implications about mankind's lust for power.
@azh45795 ай бұрын
@@croatiancowboy There's a video of Tim explaining the 2024 program's connection out there somewhere. Troop made a deal with the devil in their great ambition to "Lasso the Sun" and the devil held up his end of the bargain as they do successfully end up lassoing the sun, but now in 2024 it's the Troopers' turn to hold up their end of the deal and we kind of see them subjugated for most of the show until they fight back in the closer.

Hi! I marched in this show (and was happy to see you react to it because this is my favorite out of the ones I performed in) and I'd like to give some insight on the design. You did a good job on catching the themes of greed. One of the biggest inspirations for this show was the movie "There Will Be Blood," which is alluded to at the start with the bowling pin that you can see being held by one of our front ensemble members, and the movie's soundtrack being played for sound testing. The entire show tells the story of a greedy group of oil workers trying to strike it rich and slowly being consumed by their work until they want nothing else, while also walking through the oil drilling process by building up the tension until the sunburst (expanding circle) at the end simulates the oil exploding out of ground. The rings of gold that you find around our necks at the end are there because we pulled them out of our hats to cover our eyes during the Nothing Else Matters ballad - symbolizing that our greed has blinded us. Originally, they were supposed to go back into the hats, but that's hard to get done within the 12 beats afterwards, so instead we put them around our necks. It's a happy coincidence that this ended up being symbolism for the greed taking over AND a homage to the yellow scarves in traditional Troopers uniforms. The reason why this one is my favorite out of the ones that I have marched is because, throughout the season, the themes were used as metaphors for us members during rehearsal. While we frame being consumed by the oil as a bad thing by how it's portrayed on the field, for us performers we WERE the oil workers. Along with the theme of being consumed by greed, there's a theme of wanting something so much that you would do anything for it, which was used to have us members relate to the show as people who wanted to perform at DCI finals so much that we would work our hardest for it. I won't ever forget the feeling of hugging my friends and cheering in the parking lot on semifinals night when we learned that we had made it to finals, after we had built it up for the whole season. You may have noticed another commenter say that "vorAcious" is the first show in a trilogy, and I want to say, if you end up watching the 2023 show "To Lasso the Sun," it's a sequel in the sense of the theming and not the direct staging. While vorAcious explores the sort of "We achieved our goals, but at what cost?" type of chase, To Lasso the Sun explores the "I'm going to aim for something literally impossible and unrealistic, no matter the cost" type of chase. While I'm taking a break from performing this year to focus on my studies, I would assume that the 2024 production, "Dance With the Devil," explores what happens when hubris gets the best of you, and how you deal with the costs of your ambitions. In short, the 2022-2024 trilogy is cowboy Icarus, about chasing a dream and dealing with the consequences. Something that I highly recommend is that you watch the headcams for some of these shows! It does a good job of portraying what rehearsal is like, and how it feels to be performing on the field.

I'm an alumnus from waaaaay back. At the ripe old age of 13, my rookie year was 1979. It was the first time Troopers made it into DCI finals after a couple of rough years. I love the fact that our closer back then is so similar to the closer in VorAcious. Ours was a medley of Ecstacy of Gold and Ghost Riders in the Sky. The first time I watched VorAcious, the nod to our signature sunburst gave me chills and brought on some joyful tears. Mike Gogh made a short film several years ago called Hellbent for Victory (and now the corps song is running on a loop in my head) and one of the excerpts is him playing the Dave Richards tape. Richards was one of the judges in '79 and his reaction is a perfect example of what we felt on the field that day. I love being able to share stories like this to the newer generations of our Long Blue Line. I'm sure you know what I mean when I say it's a feeling you'll never forget!! HLD!! >11< (I'm not able to share the link, but if you search Hellbent for Victory, it will lead you to the Dave Richards excerpt)

The Troopers are one of the original corps but they hadn’t finished in the top 12 in ages. The crowd loved seeing them make it back. Casper, Wyoming is very much a western/cowboy area of the country. So their entire aesthetic is based on that. Also oil is sometimes called “black gold”
@geraldklein7507 ай бұрын
Nail on the head with the show theme. I marched this show on mellophone. During the ballad hit the horn line is actually blindfolded by the little gold scarfs before later moving them down to the necks, both being blinded/ restrained by greed as well as homage to the Troopers history, the Troopers traditional 11th Ohio Cavalry uniform included a yellow scarf around the neck. Been watching you for a few months since you started DCI reactions up, it is amazing how observant you are with all of these shows, keep it up we love you.

"World Championships" is actually a set of 3 performances across separate days with cutoffs for the top X corps to advance. Last year there were 32 corps in Prelims, 25 advanced to Semifinals, and there are 12 that get to perform in Finals. Since the 1980s, Troopers had only made top 12 one other year (2009, 13 years earlier) despite being one of the founding members of DCI, which is what made this return so special and so easy to root for and especially in the 50th anniversary year. These kids started most every Troopers tour hoping that would be the one to to bring them back to performing in front of that crowd on finals night, and this group actually did it. Honestly you could think of it like the English Premier League, where there are some clubs that will expect to be at the top every year and others that are just hoping to ride a magic season into competing and hanging tough alongside the elite, despite far less resources or ability to attract players. Also the piece you're looking for is The Ecstacy of Gold by Ennio Morricone, from the score for The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

I have fortunate to see it live a handful of times, and it never ceases to give me chills and bring me to my feet. I love that they work it into the show in such an organic way, and manage to keep it fresh in such a rapidly changing artform. ♡ the Troopers. Get it, 11!

The show was inspired by the movie "There will be blood." My son marched this show, he had so many amazing stories. They were a young corps, having many age-outs the year before. This corps embodied the word "Grit." A few weeks before finals, about 50% of the corps was quarantined from a Covid outbreak for a week and a half... and when they came back their lungs were still recovering. As it happened, most of the kids that were quarantined were the vets, leaving the newer performers there for a week and a half... unable to perform shows, it was like a second spring training for them. When the veteran members returned the whole corps came out swinging and willed their way into finals. They gave it everything they had and came skidding into this finals performance. It was an absolute pleasure to watch from the outside, and speaking for the other parents I know, we were so incredibly proud of them all for what they accomplished. >11

Probably the best last place (12th) finish in DCI in the last 20 years. The ending and use of the oil streamers, the powerful drumline, the building of volume, the symbolism of the oil and greed, the classis troopers drill at the end. Just about everything worked with this show.

Thank you so much for covering the Troopers! As a member who marched in finals the time before the 13 year gap and this show (83-85, 1985 we placed 9th), I am so happy to see them competitive again and you're observations are spot on. Casper (and the region) is known for oil production. Although I somewhat miss some of the original elements (ie company front and sunburst) I know that change is necessary for growth an am glad to see them making the changes to compete! Check out not only the 23 show, but 85 as well (back before we used amplification ;) ). Thank again for the awesome reaction video for the Troopers! HDL!! Go F-Troop!!

In this year, this show’s concept is about the movie “There Will Be Blood” about an oil tycoon in the late 19th century, and through the struggles of working in an oil tycoon they finally discover gold, hence the golden electric chello and the gold on the oil rig, etc, at the closer of the show.

14:14 - astute observation. their percussion was arguably their strongest caption (section) of the corps that year. If I recall correctly, they had some new staff changes and they had some percussion staff/educators that were former educators for Santa Clara Vanguard? Feel free to correct me if anybody in the comments knows more about what they're talking about lol. It's not uncommon whatsoever to have a bigger emphasis on the best caption or even individual section of your corps if you have a surplus of talent there. Flaunt what you got!! They deserved to be featured if they're good! Bluecoats in particular was and honestly still kind of is famous for always having an amazing Tuba section. It's a symbol of pride at this point lol. Practically every show they did in the 2010s had some form of crazy Tuba feature in it.

If you loved their 2022 show, you should watch 2023!! I personally liked 2023 so much better, the overall design was a little better in my opinion, the corps appeared to receive better talent/performers due to the publicity of their successors the year prior making it to finals for the first time in 13 years, plus they had a fucking harmonica solo, and that alone carries some excitement since we've never seen something like it before in dci. Also, not to mention, their 2023 program is a direct sequel to their 2022 program, as I'm sure plenty of people have already said in the comments. Got to see To Lasso The Sun multiple times when i performed last summer due to a concussion I had lol, and it was definitely one of my more favorite shows of the season, even if the corps I marched was in DIRECT competition with the Troopers score wise for literally the entire season even up into Finals night (I marched Colts! 🔺)

In the early years of DCI, they were known as "America's Corps". They may be the only corps to have performed for the President on the White House lawn. So many of their shows were designed to capture the western themed spirit of America. At one point they simply went financially bankrupt and ceased to exist. So their comeback is all the more emotional for so many. .......... Also, you DCI fans need to check out some of Charlie's other reviews. Recently watched his review of comedian Lavell Crawford, from a year ago. Funniest thing I've seen in ages, both Lavell and Charlie.
