@@emilyrose9760 right, the generational gap crossed my mind as well. The creator(s) of Family Guy were mostly Gen X'ers and, even now, the show still retains a fair amount of their trademark 'can't take the heat; get out of the kitchen', offensive, dark, gallows humor etc., (though it's still been very much neutered). Although they have shelved many older episodes from being re-aired, and toned down the edge quite a bit, nevertheless the writers have found some smart ways to 'hide' many gags that simply aren't allowed to be said, nor laughed at anymore (at least not during the 'season' we're currently in as a society). Being forced to think more creatively to land a joke on a specific target while simultaneously going over the heads of gatekeepers somehow makes it worthwhile by pushing what would've been an 'okay' joke into something funnier, like the 'tunnel scene' here where the 'joke' sneaks up on you and manages to tickle that 'if you know, you know' spot in the brain. Censors have always unintentionally turned good writers into great ones.

I'm American and been to the UK several times and have worked for British people and have a lot of Brits in my social circle here in LA so I know what you're like. Honestly, you aren't much different than us. Americans and Hollywood especially are obsessed with perfect bright white teeth so we see British people with normal teeth and it's a point of difference that's a big joke. You don't fit that stereotype though. Your teeth are perfect. I'm actually jealous of them. I'm surprised it wasn't in Family Guy but I think the main thing Americans think is that your food has no flavor. I have to say it is much harder to find delicious food there. It exists but it's just way different than here where everything has so much better fresh ingredients and spices. Also, most Brits can drink us under the table. Americans get embarrassed if they drink to the point of being drunk but Brits will brag about it, haha. Most Americans imitation of an English accent is a bad posh one. I think that's what we've seen the most in movies. Unless someone just studies accents most Americans aren't going to differentiate between scouse and cockney and posh etc.
@Xalerdane Жыл бұрын
3:45 _Family Guy_ has this thing where they deliberately drag a joke out for far too long, and in this case it got combined with the ‘Brits are emotionally constipated’ stereotype and went somewhere _weird._ 5:48 The American general understanding of British culture is primarily based on Sherlock Holmes, Monty Python, Mr. Bean, BBC murder mysteries, Doctor Who, and Mary Poppins. The only location in Britain the average American could name off of the top of their head would be London, unless they’re into NuWho in which case they might know about Cardiff. Basically our mental image of the average British (English) man is a member of the upper or upper-middle class of London who came here through a time warp from the middle of the twentieth century: all received-pronunciation, stiff upper lip, keep calm and carry on, mustn’t make a fuss, ooo what would the neighbors think, Oxford vs Cambridge, put the kettle on, went to boarding school, right then, hmm yes quite, dependent entirely on external validation for sense of self-worth, emotionally stunted, never once hugged his children or told them that he loved them, things are starting to get a bit sticky here, fish and chips, spotted dick, Rule Britannia, three-piece suits with bowler hats and bow ties. Unless we’re thinking about the working class, in which case it’s going to be Cockney, and by Cockney I mean Dick Van Dyke as Bert in Mary Poppins. The teeth thing is mostly a result of our own hyperfixation on orthodontics and dental hygiene giving us somewhat ridiculously high standards for what a mouth should look like. Anything that isn’t pearly white and perfectly aligned might as well be two red licorice ropes studded with burnt popcorn kernels to us.
@Nathanscottphilipps11 ай бұрын
Not sure if explained, or if you really didn't realize it but in america for years people focused on orthodontics as well as general dentistry but in UK they didn't really care about tooth appearance, just oral hygiene until the 1990s so it became a comic stereotype of the brit with bad teeth like austen powers even though the dentistry techniques are similar all over now.

Americans generally can’t tell the difference between the different accents in the UK. Maybe cockney, but the rest just all sound British to Americans…so yes…that is what we think you sound like 😂😂

Coming from the south of the US the twang is very noticeable in the British English language so I can see why they portray Brit’s like this. Several of the people I know from the UK talk exactly like how the show portrayed them. Although the way Brit’s look isn’t something that jumps out to me personally so you got me there 😂

Look up Rhoticity in accents. Accent Help has a short video on it that is eye opening as to how a simple change to this can change a persons accent completely. The southern Twang is non-Rhotic.

about the way Brits look - of course, very very exaggerated on Family Guy - but being a really old person I can tell you true that in the early 1960s during what was called the "British Invasion" of music and spy movies it was pretty apparent that a lot of people, even famous ones, didn't do regular dentist visits or go to orthodontists. It was also a running joke in the first Austin Powers movie. Not saying it isn't damn rude of us, but that is the reason.

My family just got back from Europe. They said the food had no seasoning. No salt or pepper even. They loved the ppl in Ireland and London but they said ppl in Birmingham were terrible. You need to come eat some American food. You will understand why we have so many herbs and spices when you taste the food.

You do not SPEAK that way but you certainly SOUND that way to me; if that makes any sense. We Southerners are constantly mocked and stereotyped. We just laugh at ourselves and move on...... It is all in good fun.

That’s true just about anywhere. You don’t have much of a sense of humor if you can’t laugh at yourself. 😊

I’m from the Midwest, so I have a non-accent to most people. I’ve lived in the south for 13 years now, and I can tell you that there are 3 distinct accents per region. You have people who speak like I do with maybe a y’all thrown in and maybe a few southern colloquialisms. You have the traditional southern, where the people sound educated, but definitely pronounce fire like fahr or ice like ahs. And then you have the “country” southerners who are the root of the stereotype. I still need a translator for some of them. Of course the middle ones vary from region to region, like South Carolina has a different sound than Alabama and Tennessee is different than Texas. It all gets grouped into “southern” but I’ve been here long enough that I can usually tell if you’re from Mississippi or Georgia. I’m sure the UK is the same. I can generally understand Londoners just fine, but I went on a dinner cruise with a couple from Leeds and I could not understand what the hell they were talking about most of the time. We had a hell of a fun night with them though. They made fun of us, we made fun of them. All separated by a common language.

Old Sherlock Holmes stories sometimes refred to a Gentleman 's club where silence is required, so no one is allowed to talk, so people had to find other ways if they really needed to get someone's attention. So I think that one scene is spoofing that.
