Hi Kabir... as a medical guy in the Navy for over 20 years, most of that initial touching that you see is primary immobilization. Also, there is some quick assessment being done to determine if there is a palpable skull fracture or skull deformity. It is important to know that for potential immediate problems with regard to pulmonary and cardiac function. It is primarily initial immobilization however to make sure the person doesn't move their head or neck too much. A lot depends on what the person tells you as well. I guarantee you every single one of those guys whether they got up or not were being questioned by the medical staff (trainers) while they were still down, which gives the medical people important information based on their answers.

I don't think that's what they are doing because the neck injury isn't much of a thing in baseball The ball isn't gonna make their neck snap, it's small and dense, most of the impact force is just where it lands because it doesn't have the actual weight behind it to cause whiplash

Injuries like these are very rare. I have worked over 10,000 baseball games as a sportscaster and have seen maybe 4 or 5 at the most. Only two were memorable injuries. Doesn't mean I haven't seen players hurt, hit, get a shot with a line drive, etc. but not any real major injuries.

I know it’s rare. The first one I remember is when Ron Cey got hit in the World Series. That was a bad one. I got hammered in college playing first base. A right handed batter hit a railing liner while I was playing a few steps up. The ball conked off my head and straight into the visitor’s dugout! Needless to say, it wasn’t a great experience.

It's not the immediate injury that can be the issue. If they have a closed head injury with a bleed on the brain, such as a subdural hematoma or worse, am epidural hematoma. Minutes to hours later they could look fine one minute, and rapidly deteriorate the next. Causing increased intracranial pressure, leading to an uncal herniation, and brain death

Fun fact - the reason batters wear helmets, particularly ones with flaps is thanks to Tony Congliano. He was Rookie of the Year in the late 60s, got hit by a pitch in the orbital bone, and it basically ended his career prematurely. For a lot of similar reasons as you're seeing here, some are wondering if making pitchers wear helmets might be soon required too

This video would have been much better if the outcome would have been put up on the screen. I'm sure you can google the outcome but it would have been nice to see in the video. 3:50 I think it is required to have an assessment in these cases. A batter will foul off a ball right onto his foot more often. A ball injury mostly minor will happen maybe every 10 games or so. Pitches or line drives to the head would be much more rare.
@polarisnorth3 жыл бұрын
3:50 Yes, a hit to the head will get you pulled from the game for assessment. It's a very rare injury (you may notice, comparing compilations, that the total number of headshots isn't actually that high, it's just so shocking when it does happen that each incident has an outsize influence). There have been some instances where a head injury ended a player's career, but for the most part they will make a full recovery. (Exceptions: Juan Encarnacion, Tony Conigliaro, and Adam Greenberg; yes I did a wiki dive.) I can only think of two instances where someone has died - once in 1920 (which resulted in MANY safety improvements), and once in a 2007 in a freak accident where a line drive hit a coach in the neck.

I'd say catchers get hit with bats or balls much more than other players get hit with a ball to the head. In any given game a catcher is nicked multiple times by foul balls off the bat to any part of his body and less frequently a bat to the head as the batter releases it in his swing follow through. I'd go as far as to say a baseball catcher is one of the most physically demanding positions in any sport. Squatting all game, catching balls thrown usually between 92mph-100mph, all the equipment, playing in the heat and humidity of an American summer and constantly getting banged up by foul tips.

the catcher Derek Norris being hit by the bat. To many batters release one hand from the bat when they swing allowing the bat to swing farther then it should. If you keep both hands on the bat then the bat doesn't have a chance to end up behind the batter and making contact with the catcher or even the umpire
@robertfanion28153 жыл бұрын
It is very common for baseball players to have a one hand swing through. Depending on your muscle and bone structure some guys cant keep two hands and swing through all the way. That incident was an unfortunate situation where you have a guy that was standing very close to the plate and not only had the one hand follow through (which I will give you definitely gives a wider swing radius) but also had the "perfect" swing angle to make contact and a catcher that was at the wrong position (not that he was in the wrong for being there he just was in the right spot to get hit by that swing). This is waaaaaaay more uncommon than a batter or pitcher getting hit in the head and those are very uncommon.

2:05 He did recover, and returned after passing concussion protocol. He didn't, however, accompany the Marlins to Cincinnati to play the Reds, as he was in a Pittsburgh hospital overnight for evaluation. He later thanked the Pittsburgh fans for giving him a standing ovation as he was carted off. The Marlins traded him to the White Sox that offseason in exchange for André Rienzo, current pitcher for Mexican team Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos. Jennings retired from baseball before spring training 2020, just before *gestures everywhere*. Along a similar line, I may have recommended this already (being that it was August 2020, I probably have), but if I haven't, go check out Jomboy Media's video, "Jose Alvarez takes a 105mph line drive to the nuts, a breakdown".

These guys are amazing. Those baseballs are making the trip from the pitcher, to the bat and back to the pitcher in something like ⅔ of 1 second. And a force off the bat of roughly 7000-8000 pounds. I was lucky in my 20 some odd years of playing ball to only take a line drive off the wrist. Thought it was broke, took my at bat the next inning and got to second base and I realized the entire wrist was number and I basically couldn't move it. However I also caught a good majority of my career too and I took a beating behind that plate with foul balls off the mask, equally as painful. The masks are more there to.....keep things from breaking. They keep your face from taking the full brunt....but they are still close enough to your head that you feel a massive amount of force from them still.

Im pretty sure the reason the medics touch the pitchers head where the ball hit right away is to check for fractured skull or broken jaw so when they lay you down they know where its safe to do so. I was a starting pitcher from grade 5 through high school and my senior year i took line drive off a metal bat right off the back of my head. It knocked me out cold. I have pretty much no memory of the actual moment but I remember the grapefruit size knot it left on my head lol.

The reason the head is touched immediately after being struck is to immobilize it. You do not know if any spinal damage is involved and moving the head could aggravate any neck or spinal injury. You also want to feel for any swelling to rule out possible fracture or hematoma that may indicate internal bleeding. 👩🏻⚕️❤🇺🇸
