Austin Collie was the receiver in both of the clips where Peyton was included. He only ended up playing 6 years as a professional (one in the CFL). He retired because of head injuries.

I once saw a Buffalo Bills reciever named Don Beebe jump up to catch the pass. Defender was right behind him and Beebe flipped over the defender. Beebe landed squarely on top of his head. His helmet crunched down to his shoulder pads. Beebe bounced like a spring and landed on his back. Beebe was down for a minute, medic ran out and woke him up. Beebe ran off the field and was back 2 plays later. It was incredible to see.

@3:40 "why do they go for the head go for the chest" Its not that simple for a few reasons. Your target is moving as well, watch that clip again right before the hit the go catching the ball slows down and slumps down to catch the ball. At full speed the guy going to make the tackle is going to have less than a second to aim for a different spot if he hasn't already committed to his target by that point. Edit: @5:40 this hit is a good example of it, guy behind him hits the dude in the head because he is aiming up since he is smaller, knocks his head forward, second guy who likely hits his chest otherwise not hits him in the face. They are are normally aiming for the chest shoulder area but you have your own head which if you are aiming high is likely also going to be aimed just that little but higher which is going to lead to head to head hits. Defensive backs tend to be some of the smaller guys on the field so they have to aim high or low to bring down guys vastly bigger than them. Going high is the best place to jar the ball lose which is the primary job of these guys. Its all just a bad set of circumstances to where doing everything right puts you a fraction of a degree from making the difference in a great hit or a nasty penalty.

Facts and not to mention. The offensive player always lowers his body a couple inches instinctively to brace for the contact while on the other side defending player already committed to the tackle. Imaging launching at a target and it drops 6 inches right before you hit it.. gonna look like you aimed high every time.

It’s a lot harder to avoid the head than you think. Most of the time, when players brace for hits they lower their heads so you even if you’re aiming for the chest area there’s not much you can do when the player brings his head to the area you were already aiming for. And if you aim even lower people might think you’re going for the knees which is considered just as dirty.

I used to be a member of St. John Ambulance. Our local university ran a football league, and we provided First Aid cover. There were some occasions where two players, often from the same team, would come in with obvious injuries to their heads from going for headers and missing the ball! Then we were very firm about head injury advice, explaining compression as well as concussion. The looks on their faces when we had to explain NO DRINKING ALCOHOL. Im also wondering if the protective clothing of American football causes more damage than it prevents, only because it gives the players a greater sense of invulnerability so they attack harder.

The trouble is even if one is tracking for a player's shoulder/chest region, if said player moves his own head in the wrong direction, helmet to helmet contact can be the result! And it could be potentially even more devastating because neither party is aware of the other's actions, so both are less cautious!

The thing I can’t stand at all is when someone is down and clearly hurt and you get players acting like 7:47. I understand that Samuels doesn’t like that he got called for that but the fact that you have absolutely zero regard for a guy that could potentially have his career ended right there and you throw a tantrum right next to that guy. It doesn’t matter that they aren’t on your team or even someone you hate, they are still a person and their life is potentially forever changed

It's hard to stop some of these collisions. It's a fast game and with 2 players, neither is sure what the other is doing. Like the DB might lower himself to hit the body and the receiver might lower himself to get ready for the hit that's coming. Well with both going lower, you end up head to head anyway.

It's a monster of the NFLs own creation, that they have been trying for a while now to get under control. For years the NFL used to produce a video every year of the biggest hits of the year. Big hits with no emphasis on technique in tackling was celebrated. So you ended up with guys going for the biggest hit possible trying to make a highlight worthy play. In recent years there has been more emphasis in trying to take as many of the really dangerous hits out of the game as they can. But you still get guys trying for a big hit when just a good tackle is the better choice. The best example of this is the "Minneapolis Miracle". If the defender for the Saints just makes a basic tackle, the game is over and his team wins, but he goes for a big hit and whiffs.

In American Football you're trained to not concede a single inch to your opponent. These guys are giants running around like Olympic sprinters, it puts them in some tough positions. Whenever you see someone get hit and one arm becomes stiff and the other is bent in front of them with their fingers sometimes at weird poses, it's an involuntary reaction called "fencing position", which usually indicates the player suffered traumatic brain injury, usually a concussion. Unfortunately, NFL fans have seen it many times over the years, one of the scarier ones recently being Tua Tagovailoa last year.

Hits like these have become less frequent due to a rule where it's considered a foul when a player initiates unnecessary contact against an opponent in a defenseless posture. This penalty leads to a 15-yard loss and an automatic first down. In cases where the officials deem the action flagrant, the player may also face disqualification.

What really ticks me off about the players and the NFL, andsafety is that most of the players and the NFL do not take it seriously. The NFL has introduced safer helmets that some players have worn in preseason, those white helmets we have seen during preseason, why aren’t the players wearing them for every regular season game? Some players won’t wear because they made them not look pretty or cool !!!!This is not a one sided issue. The players have to get serious about safety. Think l am being harsh on the players? Look at it this way, when is the first time the players held a strike over their safety rather than for more money?

There have been many changes to try to protect players from this type of hit but the reality is it's unavoidable to an extent. I played CB, on defense when I played football. Best you can do is line up for.the hit and hope you don't end up head to head. Often the offensive player jukes, twists, or ducks at the last second to avoid contact understandably...by that time the defender has already launched and in air...he can't just stop and redirect to avoid the offensive players dropping head. It's real easy to watch these replays in slow motion, and feel like it was malicious....but 9 out of 10 are simply two players going full speed and both moving in the worst ways. Neither the offensive player or defensive player should lower their heads..but unfortunately most instinctively do.

Hi Kabir! Absolute mayhem! With a lot of these types of collisions there is no way to avoid some serious physical damage. Multiple players are running full speed ahead and may even be airborne. There's no way to make an adjustment. In fact, the player who makes the contact may be the one getting hurt. There is a rule making it illegal to "spear" with the helmet, but you can do a lot of damage by ramming your shoulder into someone also. Putting a neck collar on an injured player is a standard precautionary measure. I had a friend who was a professional Rugby player here in the States, and he would get banged up pretty bad. One time I was having a party at my house and he started acting kind of weird. He had had a match the night before and apparently had taken a blow to the head. At first we thought he was drunk, but it went beyond that. We drove him home and put him to bed, and the next day he went to the doctor, who determined that he had had a bad concussion. He was alright in a few days though.

Really wish they'd take the helmets away. Or give them the old padded leather helmets back. Everytime they "improve" helmet for player safety, players think they can hit harder. If you took that protection away, guys wouldn't be so inclined to go in so hard with their heads. You don't hear nearly as many head traumas in rugby. The players think the helmet is armor when all it is, is a weapon.

Over the past decade or so helmet-to-helmet contact and leading with the crown of the helmet has been banned, and a Targeting penalty in college will get you ejected from the game. Its a delicate balancing act...I want players to be safe, but I don't want the game to lose too much of its physical nature. The wrap rule wouldn't really work in football due to the forward pass, in many passing situations a rugby style tackle would just get you run over due to the speed of the guy catching the ball. If you were required to wrap up and tackle I could see teams mainly passing the ball to take advantage of the wrap rule to break a bunch of big gains, which would ruin the game. Also, there is a greater importance placed on distance in football over rugby due to the concept of downs/distance. In rugby (forgive me if I'm wrong here) it seems like dragging the guy down over the span of a few yards isn't a huge deal. In football being dragged by a guy for a few yards could be the difference between 4th down and a 1st down, which is why so many guys go for the big hit instead of wrapping. They are trying to stop him from advancing immediately, not just trying to get him to the ground eventually. This leads to more brutal injuries and of course, a high chance of missing the hit and letting the guy break free for a big gain.
@wckdaintgood
@wckdaintgood Жыл бұрын
I rm a debate saying rugby was more physical than American football. This video is exactly why I say American football is by far one of the most dangerous sports to play. In rugby you kinda know your limits but in the nfl you feel invincible in those pads and helmet so it doesn’t bother you to run full speed into somebody. Some kid that played against our football team in high school died on the field bc he got hit so hard multiple time in the game. He collapsed and was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead. Sadly head to head contact can’t be removed from the game bc it’s kinda part of the game but you catch a massive fine and ejection for it. (Plus there’s always new helmet tech that comes out to try and prevent brain injuries)

If you are a receiver you will lower you target area to try and protect yourself and at the same time the defensive player is trying to get low to avoid the head but if both ppl go low you end up with those violent collisions . I played rugby in college and if they wanna make football safer they should adopt the rugby rule of tackling which wrapping the player up and can't tackle useless their feet are in the ground.

You cannot regulate all of the risk out of a contact sport like football. The game moves at such a pace that you cannot measure every contact between players to protect them from being hurt. I think that the NFL takes reasonable measure to protect their plays without compromising the incredible athleticism and skill it takes to play this game on the professional level. Of course intentional, or even incidental contact to the head results in penalties, fines and even suspensions and that a good thing. No launching yourself or using the crown of the helmet are also good preventative measures to take. But like you mentioned with MMA, boxing, auto racing, bull riding etc... you have to be willing to accept a certain amount of risk to participate in these sports.

I completely understand your thoughts about keeping away from the head I played free safety my whole sport life and that is completely impossible to do and be an effective safety. Keep in mind when you line up for a hit you are guessing where the other person will be at the time of impact they see you they react different than you expected then bam head to head. I get there are some real cheap shots out there but there are so many moving parts and 2 humans all reacting at the same time this will always happen if you start saying below the chest the players will run crouched over and then what do you do.

They don't go for the head. In that 49ers clip the receiver was about 4 feet off the ground [hes really short] and it happens so fast. I can assure you the defender was not trying to hit him right in the head. Some guys used too, but nowadays you'll get ejected and lose a lot of money. Possibly even suspensions. The guy in the first clip played for my favorite team, the Colts. If you notice hes wearing a black visor, he took like 2 or 3 shots like that within a year or two and had to retire early...shame because he is a great guy and was a great player. The one he took in Philly I legitimately thought he was dead. But yeah it just bothers me when people blame/demonize the defenders. Their job is extremely difficult. If they go low, the offensive players get mad because they can miss the entire season with a knee injury/never be the same.. I've heard offensive players say they would prefer you to go high. It happens within seconds, and their job is to stop offensive players from catching/running with the ball. There isn't much they can do. I promise you they feel just as bad about someone being seriously injured as anyone does.
