CIA are a civilian agency, thus are not subject to military rules/command/justice. I guarantee, SAC officers regularly do things which would earn uniformed service members lengthy prison sentences. Congressional oversight of these operators is more tightly controlled and far less transparent than is oversight of military operations. The typical special operator is highly intelligent - easily on par with the average student at an elite university. These guys, on the other hand, possess genius level intelligence - IQ's in the 160 plus range. They frequently operate completely alone, with no support at all, for months on end. Most are multi-lingual and can pass as native speakers of more than one language. Many have muddled ethnic backgrounds, which may allow them to blend into the native populations of any number of countries. Fictional examples of SOG officers (with varying degrees of authenticity): John Clark, from the novels of Tom Clancy Jason Bourne (obviously highly fictionalized, but based on SOG) Peter Quinn (played by Rupert Friend) of the series "Homeland". These operators are the distant tip of a very long spear. The work they do would almost certainly qualify, in a vacuum, as morally ambiguous at best - and reprehensible without the benefit of context.

I recommend watching a video from the channel "Liveth For Evermore" which breaks down some declassified missions that tier 1/2 operators have been involved in. They also cover special forces of other nations on the channel.

@@kabirconsiders all I can say is mostly Russia and Southeast Asia and it has a lot to do with many agencies with a lot of problems.

General Discharge is a great channel giving good primers on various units within the law enforcement, military, and intelligence communities. You should watch a lot more of their stuff as it is good to go. Growing up being exposed to military and law enforcement circles (as well as being a part of them in adulthood), a lot of the info they put out is not new to me except for some of the specifics, so sometimes I forget that most people don't know a lot about the subject material. As others have said, SAC is for missions that the military cannot be associated with.

One other thing to note is the guys who make these videos are current Marine Recon members. I believe they are reserve, as that is most likely how they have time to make these videos.

I knew a guy who flew for Air America ,which was a front operation for the CIA during the Viet Nam war . They flew weapons in for guerilla operations in Laos and Cambodia as well as Viet Nam in exchange for opium .He made enough money that he bought a nice wine estate in New Zealand of several hundred acres of vines . Notice that heroin addiction first became a big problem in the US during this period . Later the CIA was involved in Central and South America and SURPRISE cocaine became the drug of choice in the US . Ever hear of the Iran=Contra affair ? The CIA was flying cocaine into Mena airport in Arkansas when slick willie clinton was the governor there . His co-operation later got him the US Presidency . The CIA used SOME of the money this drug trade generated to fund anti ayatollah groups in Iran .

I live in a small rural county in Georgia and we had a retired CIA agent that passed away, this was several years ago. Our little county was not prepared for the funeral that followed. We don't have even one hotel room, but the county next to us is a university town so LOTS of hotel and resturants. The amount of flowers that was sent to the funeral home was from all over the world. There was several men and women who had personal guards that came to the little town. The only reason I know some of this is a friend of mine worked at the funeral home, and yes I went just to see the flowers. I didn't know the man who passed but he was very respected in the CIA. His obitiary was very long with some of what he had done but it was mostly awards or metals not how he got them. I think that was some of the prettiest flower arrangments I had ever saw and they had to move some of them to another room. The amount filled over two rooms at the funeral home. My buddy got me in when the family was not there and flowers from people all over the world and a huge one from the White House. My buddy said some of the big players in government either sent faxes to the family and several actually came and signed the funeral book. This was about 25 years ago so not as much teck stuff and fax machines were the "new" thing. Just a little bit about the CIA that I got to see some of.

I once worked as Maintenance at an apartment complex and we had a very nice old man that lived a very simple life. He was very quiet and humble and kept to himself. When his cancer (nobody knew) became to much he chose option (B) with a 38. When "it" was all said and done even the bank was allowed to 'inspect' his apartment before complex staff. When it was all said and done we found out he was a former 'military' and very very well off since he invested into a new company back in the day called IBM. Who knew!

You should really watch the movie " Zero Dark Thirty ". It's about how a lady in the CIA tracked a whole cell that led to the take down of Bin Laden. One of my favorite movies.

Once got into an argument with a classmate about the CIA. He said that if we know about them then they aren't clandestine and I replied that their existence is what makes them a clandestine agency rather it's what they do that is clandestine which is fine by me. The world would be too scary a place to exist if we knew what these guys did so I hope I never know what the CIA Special Activities Center has done!

A unit like the SEALs and CIA would be differ in their objectives. The seals is part of the military command structure, they will handle all things related to military objectives. Operations in warzones, things like that. Once a seal switches over to cia the mission now becomes about intelligence gathering. Operating largely in places the government does want anyone to know about. For instance if Somali pirates take over an ebassey. Call in the seals. If you want to insert a group deep within enemy territory to arm resistance fighters call in delta squad. If you find out Putin just poisoned the leader of western back opposition party you send it cia special oops to get him out of the country and into a western hospital

I know someone who is in this unit and he says that only people who would know ur part of it are other members as other branch of military members woukd have no idea and u can't tell them if are asked what branch ur in u say that ur in a unit that is a front we say they reason no one who isn't in unit can't go into that building on base that has razor wire and guard ect is that it houses a bunch of a technology and computers were we can ontorl all of our spy satellites ect but really u enter building walk to a elevator scan ur eyes and hands and put in ur code and other security features that are highly classified and u take the elevator down 175 feet under ground to a black site and our units command center

The typical name that is well known for the cia group is SAD. Many tier 1 operators still don't make it.

The big difference between CIA and normal special forces units is simply secrecy. The men and women in SOC are definitely better than the average operator, but they are as good as Delta and DEVGRU. Basically, I can tell you that I am a Marine Raider from the First Marine Raider Battalion, but if I ever joined SAC I would only be able to say, I am a CIA Contractor, which could mean anything such as board room security, pencil pusher, or bookend. In terms of mentality, I'd say that differs. The mentality required to become an operator in the military is very different from the mentality required to be an effective operator and actually OPERATE. To become an operator, you need to *want* it, you need to be willing to sacrifice for it, and you need to master the idea of "one minute at a time" because you will live in the suck of 9-15 months of training that you can only survive if you take it one minute at a time. To be a good operator you need to be a people's person and you need prioritize the mission more. In the Tier 1 Units like DEVGRU, ISA, DELTA, British SAS and SBS, they often do not pick the best operators for the job, they pick the right ones. If they are forced to choose between a "tier 1" level guy with a crappy personality or a "tier 2" level guy that can work well with others, they will always pick the latter of two. Also, in conventional military units, the priority is to complete the mission, but also get out alive. To make it into SOF units, you need to prioritize the mission a little bit more, and the higher priority that you put the mission, the better. For example, when DEVGRU went into the Bin Laden raid, there was the risk of suicide bombers. At one point, one of the civilians ran at the unit, the guy in the front grabbed the civvie and tackled them into an uncleared room to shield the unit from the blast. While some may say that he did it for the men behind him, but many instead think that he did it to ensure that Bin Laden was either killed by the unit or by a tribunal. Honestly, with the modern battlefield being in dense cities filled with danger and civilians, there is no difference between me and the other raiders, and conventional infantry such as Marines or Soldiers. The only difference is that a "normal" soldier will stay in one general area in their deployment, and worst-case scenario, they will be on an operation 1 tenth of the time they are deployed. In a normal deployment, I will see combat in several different countries such as Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, or Somalia and I will be on operation, debriefing, redeploying, or preparing for an op at all times. Any questions anyone has or any story requests I'll be happy to oblige, assuming that it doesn't involve anything that is classed.

@@cygnusx-3217 The political action side, I can confirm, have some paranoid brass, but most of the CIA are fine people. The paranoia isn't that bad of a thing though. The CIA, along with all other security, defense, and intelligence organization across the US, and the world, operate under the motto "We always expect trouble, because in failing to do that, we only create trouble for others." Sometimes it doesn't pay off, often it leads Intel fails that lead to horrible things such as the Bay of Pigs and the 2nd Gulf War. The CIAs nature makes it necessary to justify it's existence because the things they do in their capacity as the first line of defense rarely leave the dark rooms and locked databases of the CIA.

FBI can only operate in the USA. Also, the CIA operates around the world. The CIA may recruit from the US Military BUT you can't be both, therefore most are ex Military or they are recruited after discharge. Also, the rules are completely different for Military personal (geneva convention) than non military such as the CIA.

Yes, most who leave the military, and are still young, but experienced, will be contracted out to these organizations.

@@kimharding2246 It is Nearly impossible to tell because the FBI does get proactive in attacking potential domestic threats even if they are overseas. I would imagine it comes down to who has the intel and based on that the appropriate agency will try to handle in house first.

Though special ops units of the U.S. military have the skill sets, they (by definition) provide for no "plausible deniability". If the government wants to deny any knowledge of an operation, the C.I.A.'s units need to be used.
