So a story from school. Our dorm convinced our deans to let us watch this movie for Halloween. 30+ guys all smushed into the lobby, on couches, chairs, even the floor. We had gotten all the way to the scene where the girl crab-walked down the stairs, when the girls decided to come watch the movie with us. They snuck into the room and lightly tapped one of the guys on the shoulder. He screamed, which freaked out the rest of us. We stampeded from the room and ran over two of the girls who had come over to watch with us. Our deans didn't let us finish the movie.

The Exorcist didn't start the genre of horror films. They've existed since the early nineteen hundreds and gained popularity through the Universal films of the 1930's through the later Hammer films of the 1960's and onward. Though, this film definitely kicked off the "possession' sub-genre. Incidentally, Jaws made millions of people literally afraid to go the beach after it was released...thus, a horror movie indeed.

Same here. I saw it when I was 8. My family and I were at the drive thru. I was in the back of a station wagon, supposed to be sleeping (it was the 2nd of 2 movies, past my bed time when it came on). I pretended to be asleep but would sneak a peek whenever I could. I sneaked enough peaks to cause me nightmares for the next 5 years. I love watching these videos to see how the younger generations react, given how much our society has changed culturally since 1973.

One of my all time favorites. I was in college and saw this at the theatre with a full audience of college students. Imagine the screaming. There was also laughter at the profanity because none of us had heard profanity like that before in a movie -- and to 19 and 20 year olds -- that type of shock and language was a cause for nervous laughter. The graphic scenes, dramatic effects, and the language was totally unheard of at the time. Your reaction was great.

I met Linda Blair in 2018 and got to talk to her for a while. She's super sweet and tiny. Of course i got an autographed photo of her as the demon. For years she resented having played 'Regan' because it prevented her from getting acting roles but she later learned to embrace her iconic role in pop culture. When this came out I was 8 and snuck into the theater with my friend and his older brother. I didn't sleep very well for quite awhile.

It's set in Georgetown in DC. The stairs are part of the Georgetown campus. The author, William Peter Blatty, was a Georgetown grad. Everybody, or so it seems, in DC has been on those stairs. BTW, the book was loosely based on a true story. The Church has very strict protocols for the Rite of Exorcism. First, every possible alternative must be ruled out. (The CBS show "Evil" does a pretty good job of describing them.) This winnows the field considerably.

Fun facts: the director, William Friedkin would fire off guns near actors in order to startle them. Jason Miller (Father Karras) threatened him with bodily harm if he did it again. The vomiting scene was supposed to hit Jason Miller in the chest, but obviously missed, thus his genuine reaction is on film. Father Jospeh Dyer (the priest who comforts Father Karras as he's dying) is played by Father William O'Malley, who is an actual Catholic priest. In order to get him to appear afraid and grief stricken, the director slapped him in the face just before the take. Both Linda Blair (Regan) and Ellen Burstyn (Chris) suffered permanent back injuries from this movie and Linda cannot stand being cold due to being stuck for weeks, tied to a bed on the bedroom set. The Rick James song "Cold-Blooded" is about Linda Blair, as he was in a years long relationship with her.

The sequel to this should have been the stress from the trial for throwing TWO people out your window causing Regan to relapse and be possessed again :) BTW, the subplot with Burke was that he was up in Regan's room, drunk, and ALONE. @@cherylsims5636 No. It's a direct sequel to the original that takes place decades later. Think Halloween 2018. Ellen is actually coming back. No Linda Blair though. It was recently confirmed that they'll be making a trilogy out of it.

I pray the producers don’t use the crappy CGI for the sequel. The practical effects in the original is what makes it so believable.

The Priest sacrificed himself, inviting the demon into his body, and while he still was aware enough, he hurled himself out of the window. His responding to the last rights tells me he made it to Heaven; I'm not Catholic, but that's how I understand it. Watching it, I could only think of what Jesus said; There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for a friend.

Most of the people say Linda Blair's acting was excellent but the Actress who played her Mother was unbelievable awesome, too! Her facial expressions were perfect and always acting on Point! WOW! This Movie is an Icon and if we humans had a Time-Machine I would go back in time watching the people in the Cinema's how they react watching this Movie for the first time! Great Reaction Video! It would be very nice if you can react to more Horror-Movies! Thank you!😊

I agree, Ellen Burstyn is a great actress and deserved an Oscar for this part.

Everyone always asks about the pills from the beginning of the film. Here's the answer: Much like today, people at the time depicted in the film would get a condition called angina. Angina was caused by a blockage of the coronary artery (the artery on the outside of the heart). It hurts when this happens. Back then, the first treatment for angina was nitroglycerin tablets. Eventually, the blockage would continue, and the result would be a heart attack. These days, they may or may not give these tablets to people (there are other drugs to treat this condition), but there would probably be surgery to put a stent in the blocked artery and a bypass graft (called a CABG - pronounced "cabbage" - a coronary artery bypass graft, where a small diameter artery is harvested from the leg and engrafted to ether side of the blockage[s] to allow blood to flow easily around the heart). Back at the time of the film, CABGs were performed less often. There were a lot of reasons why, but suffice it to say that an overweight smoker with type II diabetes who was over 55 wasn't a good candidate. Some people also couldn't afford to be out of work for 6 months after open heart surgery. Cardiac specialty surgery teams were less common than today. There were reasons why it wasn't done as often.

In 2017 William Friedkin directed a documentary called The Devil and Father Amorth, no special effects ( because it's a documentary) but it's the only exorcism conducted by the Catholic Church on film. Audio is a different story, but the only one visually captured. There's one scene where he actually printed "no special effects have been added" to remind viewers when something pretty weird is going on.

In the 70s EVERYONE had a Ouija Board.😂 I recall bring in the 2nd grade when one of my friends, Norman, was snuck into a drive through movie and saw this movie. He said it was terrifying. I watched it in the 90s and laughed. By then Silence of the Lambs was out. Much scarier.

I was 12 at the time too and we also played with ouja boards. They do work you just must tell spirits GO in loud firm voice when done playing. I have still given this movie #1 most scary and Alien number 2. Silence of the lamb didnt get me as much.

1. I was 13 when I saw this in the theater with friends. What rating system they had at the time wasn't really followed that closely. By word of mouth, I was aware of the head spinning, vomiting and language but what freaked me the most were the demon flashes.😱 2. When the doctor is looking at Regan's skull x-ray and says, "Nothing in there" I always 🤣 3. The spider-walk down the stairs was NOT in the original release. 4. The loud banging with the medical equipment is for our benefit. 5. Father Merrin and the demon had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis. 6. Chris MacNeil/Ellen Burstyn actually injured her hip when the demon makes her hard fall. 7. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem most likely brought on by the previous encounter. 8. Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her. 9 Karras is confessing and asking for forgiveness for his loss of faith

Try Rosemary's Baby (1968) many people think to be even scarier than The Exorcist. It started the modern horror genre, followed by explicitly violent The Exorcist and reaching its zenith with ultra-violence wihe Texas Chainsaw Massacre the following year.
