Queen and Michael Jackson just took that list hostage. But for good reason! Anyway, I think people's favorite era of music usually falls in their teenage to young adult years. I was born in the late 70s and, for me 90s and early 2000s are great, but I love 60s music, too.
@aleatharhea
@aleatharhea Жыл бұрын
Music of the 60s and 70s had a wider dynamic range, a wider frequency range, a wider range of instruments, a wider range of lyrical content in terms of subject matter and word variety, far greater harmonic variety, more rhythmic variety, and they weren't just sampling their elders for the heavy lifting and calling it their own. That’s why old people say music all sounds alike these days. They’re not just clinging to their childhood; there’s empirical data to support this feeling. I'm not just blowing smoke; a dedicated researcher gathered tons of data for thousands upon thousands of songs over decades, and spent years doing the analysis. He's the guy who famously coined the term, "millennial whoop", to describe the prominent repetitive 2-note phrase in virtually every song from millennial artists. "Another Brick in the Wall", the first one you didn't recognize, was a massive hit, from an album that was a massive hit. They made a trippy animated film set to it, it was that big. Pink Floyd, now that's music. There are some in here I do really like. You Could’ve Had It All is masterful, … Africa, Sweet Dreams, Sweet Home Alabama, All Star, Up Town Funk… I mean, a funky hook is irresistible, even if it’s the same two chords or notes over and over. Smells Like Teen Spirit is a real grabber. Michael Jackson was always entertaining, even though I really never connected with his songs. Give me some Stevie Wonder, Chicago, CSN, Aretha Franklin. I guess soul and vocal harmony are my two greatest loves, musically. I adore CeeLo Green’s classic R&B sounding “F*ck You”. and Amy Winehouse’s Rehab.

I have now carried on the same tradition but I've added my faves to my house cleaning playlist. And I am exposing my boys to all of it. I was born in '82 and in high school from 96-2000. My playlist is everything; The British Invasion, The Eighties Hair Bands, The Disco Era, All of the older Country Music, 90's Gangsta Rap, Hip Hop, Techno, Grunge, Classic Rock legends, Rock and Roll Ballads, R&B, and the list goes on and on.

To use your vernacular, Well mate given that I turn 64 in September, my favorite eras in music range from before I was born to big bands of the 30s/40s up to 2010. It actually goes back to Mozart, Beethovan, etc, and country music. I went to high school in the 70s, and we used to have 50s day with a 50s dance that night and people would dress up. Guys would slick their hair back in D.A.s with pompadors girls would ponytail bobby socks and poodle skirts school sweaters. It was a blast. The dance started with all 50s and 60s music and turned into later 60s music like Stephen wolf. Lots of fun, there was alot of coming of age that day, at the dance and outside the dance say on under and behind the bleachers of the football field. Those were the days!

Kabir: I wonder what will be #1. My predictions: Something by Michael Jackson. Either Beat It or Billie Jean. I'm also thinking he'll have the most songs on the list, with Queen and the Beatles vying for 2nd and 3rd (Queen is my personal preference) Edit: Well, I was wrong...BoRhap was #1!!! That's so awesome. It's my personal favorite but I didn't expect it to beat out MJ.....also, I lost track, but I think Queen and MJ may have been tied for number of songs on the list. I'd have to listen again to be sure but I don't want to, LOL. Also I thought the Beatles would go higher and have more songs, not because I like them, because I'm not that crazy about them, but because everyone is always hyping them. I think both MJ and Queen deserve to be in the top spots because of pure talent and genius. There are a couple of songs I expected to make the list that didn't and I was surprised, but not disappointed, that ABBA made it so often. I didn't realize they had such staying power. I also expected Journey's Don't Stop Believin' to be in the top ten and was glad to see it was. I was surprised there were so many recent (as in the last 20 years) songs that made the list. I was thinking it would be more songs with staying power. In 20 years I don't expect anyone to remember Call Me Maybe, but they'll definitely still be singing along with "I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor or "I Love Rock n Roll" by Joan Jett. The songs I didn't know: the one Kabir said was associated with the Fast and Furious - I didn't even catch the name or group. Wonderwall by Oasis, Hey Ya by Outcast, and I didn't know any of the Shakira songs....wondering how she even made the list, to be honest. That could probably said about a few of them, like Rick Astley, LOL!

Are you kidding? Rick Astley belongs right where he is, everyone in the WORLD knows that song. And that's the point. Iconic.

Yaaaas! Queen was all over this. I can't believe the first one you said you didn't recognize was a Pink Floyd song. Now you need to turn in your Brit card. A representative from Parliament will be by later to collect it😅

I'm 68. The 60s and 70s Motown, rock, and disco music were the best with a smattering of other songs since then. It might be generational but I also love Eminem and Bruno Mars.

Definitely recognized 95% of the songs. I would mention that I’m totally surprised Purple Rain was not in the list. Beach Boys and other iconic bands either. Also noticed that no Country, nor older singers besides Elvis, and no Blues artists are mentioned which to me makes this list not correct in my mind. Definitely would be better if the list was based on style of music in able to get the true top songs of the last say 50 years.

Y'all can come for me if you want, but I've never understood the Queen hype. I've heard just as good as some of my local dives. So many greats, Steve Perry, Phil Collins, Amy Lee, Stevie Nicks, Rob Thomas, Whitney Houston, Angelina Jordan (look her up, you won't regret it) etc...

I am older Generation X and my favorite eras are the 1970’s and 1990’s. Back in the mid to late 1980’s I was a big fan of the early Alternative Rock which paved the way for mainstream Alternative and Grunge in the 1990’s..
