The cost of housing in Chicago is roughly 1/2 compared to NYC. The cost of living is much lower as well. You get the same big city lifestyle. The job market is diverse and the economy keeps growing.

I’ve visited Chicago a couple years ago and was super impressed by how clean it was compared to NY, and same metropolis vibes. I loved it so much I wanted to move but never experienced the cold/ snow, coming from SoCal (where it’s so dirty here and the politics - long story), but couldn’t imagine driving in the snow and cold wind vs warm. Will be back though! Kabir needs to visit Chicago next visit!! It’s beautiful 😍

To get from Staten Island to Manhattan without driving, you could take the Staten Island Ferry. It's free at the point of service. The ride is approximately 25 minutes long.

You don't usually buy a car in NYC just because you have kids. You use public transportation in your everyday life, and can rent a car for those times you want to drive out of the city with the kids.

In a condo, you buy your apartment, but the Building is owned by by an individual owner or corporation. A Co-op usually means that the building is owned jointly by the owners of the individual units. There's usually a Co-op Board that has to approve YOU... before you're allowed to buy a unit.

NYC is simply expensive. If, you are able to afford what you are showing, there are more options. Looking for one is not easy. Again, NYC is not a cheap area. I like what he said: '$500,000 in NYC does not get you a lot.' Thank you for sharing...=)

Staten Island is more suburban. But its a short ferry ride away from Manhattan and there are local spots.

I was forced to move to Staten Island from Brooklyn about 15 yrs ago because buying property in Brooklyn was not possible. We were able to get a detached single family colonial home for a little over 400k and needed no renovation. The major difference for me was having to buy a car, living in the other boroughs you don’t need one. But most of the people who live here are all Brooklyn transplants. Most Brooklyn natives I grew up with were all priced out after the gentrification, and the new people didn’t want us there.

I lived in apartments for years. I will never live in a shared building again. Thank goodness I own my own home. I wouldn’t live in an apartment again anywhere, even if it was free.

There's a renovated historic building in my city in Southern New England. The units are all condos. A 336 sq foot one bedroom unit [about the size of a two car garage] recently sold for $250,000 !! In December, a 262 sq foot one bedroom unit sold for $207,000 !! Because of Zoning regulations, each of these units is legally classified as a "Room" and NOT an "Apartment". These units only have a refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave... there is NO stove top or oven. There are a few larger, more expensive units in the building that DO have a stove which are classified as apartments.

I live in Brooklyn. Southern Brooklyn is where you want to look into. Bushwick also probably has much more affordable places. But I'd advise getting a home in Staten Island. You can get a house for the price of a one bedroom in Brooklyn.

Yea Staten Island is part of the 5 boroughs of NYC, but as the guy said, a lot of ppl who want to live in a more suburban/family setting, yet still want to remain in the 5 boroughs and fairly close to the actual city, typically move to Staten Island.

Yes, you have been to Queens if you arrived at JFK Airport. NYC has two airports-- JFK and LaGuardia. Both are in Queens.

Parking is rarely included in NYC. Someone I work with pays $750/mo plus taxes for his parking spot in his midtown apartment building. Riverdale is a better Bronx neighborhood. Staten Island is an Island. There is limited public transit to Manhattan and will take well over an hour. More like 2+ hours on a weekend. I live in Queens. I wouldn’t live in Rego Park, it’s very congested. The closer Queens neighborhood are to Manhattan, the more they cost to live there, and the more crowded they get. We pay monthly water charges in NYC. Apartment building landlords/management companies absorb that cost on rentals and include it as part of monthly fees on condos and co-ops. That’s why many rental apartment buildings don’t have in-unit washers/dryers and opt for a laundry room. Newer buildings will have them but you’ll be up charged for the amenity. Watch that guy’s video on the difference between co-op and condo. I’m sure he can explain it better than I can.

Riverdale is nice and it doesn't feel like it is far from Manhattan, but I remember going there for some long forgotten reason years ago (early 1990s) and it is hard to get to, hard from the east side anyway. I've lived in two small tenement buildings in uptown Manhattan. Neither had laundry rooms and tenants are not supposed to have washers/dryers in their units (although I've seen a few over the decades). Laundromats are it. I drop my clothes off, pay for them, and pick them up the next day nicely laundered and folded. I wouldn't start doing laundry again after all these years even if I did have in-building or in-unit access.

There is no Subway connection from Staten Island to the rest of NYC. You either drive or take the Staten Island Ferry to Lower Manhattan. Driving is expensive with the tolls, the ferry is free. Staten Island tends to be quite independent from the rest of the city. It is pretty much split into two parts, north of the expressway which is more urban and mostly apartments, and south of the expressway, which is where the house shown is, and is more suburban. Staten Island is much more politically conservative than the rest of NYC.

Parking is almost never included because 75% of NYC residents don't own a car, and don't want to pay for something they won't use. That Rego Park Queens apartment is very similar in size to my own Manhattan apartment, although I'm in a pre-war building.

Nope, nope. You can have it. 500 sq. ft. for $500,000. My mother was from Manhattan and when I was a kid we visited family there a few times a year. You can have it. Give me the country living any time. And you get a nice size house (2400-2800 sq. ft.) with a 2 car garage. He mentioned in the first apartment the dryer was vented out. I have NEVER seen where it wasn’t vented.

Or in Vegas, 5br, 3b, and a 3 car garage. New York, NY doesn't appeal to me at all. There are so many places you could live cheaper than New York. Live elsewhere and visit because if you live there, you'll have to work 24/7 to survive.

It's New York City, one of the most pre-eminent cities in the world, living space is very limited, & because of its status as a cosmopolitan city, its importance on the global stage (the United Nations is there, for instance), its power as the premier financial center of the world (Wall Street & the New York Stock Exchange), its major influence as a center for the arts & culture, & simply the cost of maintenance of infrastructure & public services, such as fire departments, law enforcement, garbage collection, etc., all contribute to the cost of real estate in such a global icon of a city. ​@@kabirconsidersI pay $3200 for a new build 3br/2ba in Brooklyn. Parking of course is extra, so I pay $200 for that. No in unit laundry, but I do have central air which is exceedingly rare in NYC. A co-op is a type of ownership where you own shares in the building instead of the individual unit. They can be cheaper than condos, but you will have to have the co-op board approve your purchase.

Staten Island is quite nice. There is no train to Manhattan. There is a train on the island but the only way to get on and off the island is by car or ferry. The ferry is free. There are also express busses that will take you straight to Manhattan. There are lots of places to shop and eat. I have a condo here and bought it for $262k. I wouldn't pay 500k for what that agent was showing you. There are much nicer places to live here. There is more home ownership here than other boros. A lot of apartments and homes come with parking spaces. Less than half a million live on the island, making it quieter than the other boros. It more farm like here so there are wild turkeys running around, deers, geese, ducks, hawks, etc. I love it here.

Regarding the Bronx, Kabir, Riverdale is one of the swankier neighborhoods. As a borough, the Bronx runs the gamut from extremely poor and run down, to extremely wealthy. Van Cortlandt Park that he mentioned in the video is actually really beautiful, lots of lovely nature to see, hiking trails, etc. For me personally, I love NYC and am very familiar with it (both of my parents were from the city), but I'd never live there. I like the quiet of the country.

I grew up in Manhattan. My parents bought their 2 BR apartment in 1985 for $20,000. In 2015 they sold it for $800,000. The prices now are due to gentrification, not because it’s a great lifestyle. There’s nothing sustainable about it. Native New Yorkers don’t blow their money by moving from one apartment to another. If they can afford $500K they leave the city and buy actual houses in NJ, Staten Island or elsewhere to raise their families in. Please Kabir don’t even consider moving to NYC. It’s nice to visit every now and then but there’s no good reason to live there.

I mean yeah sure if you have all the time in the the world, but if your a busy professional hell no you need a damn car, just imagine you need to go grocery shopping, go to the bank and pick up a package, regular errand stuff right and you only have one off day, well using public transportation your day will be completely shot just doing simple things

In Staten Island, you need a car, but you get better housing. The traffic in all the boroughs is horrible. The NJ suburbs are much better, and they have trains going into Manhattan. They are just as expensive, but you get more for your money.

Kabir, you will never want a car because when you go to a restaurant for example, there is no place to park it. If you do find a place, you will pay$$$-plus you will walk a few blocks. It’s really impt that you size up your proximity to the subway stop. When you need a car you can rent one and if it’s a group situation- split the cost. Also, people use Uber. People get a monthly food delivery( or every two weeks), and shop weekly and take it on the subway or walk.( my daughter lives in Queens ).😊 Living in NYC is an experience, you have to embrace. Driving in that traffic is a nightmare!

This video is very misleading. You can find better bigger homes in decent neighborhoods for that price. He was definitely showing how much $500k+ would get you in expensive crowded neighborhoods. You could also definitely get a cheaper fixer-upper in a nice neighborhood as well. Plus, owning a home in NYC is a good investment with the way property appreciates here.

$499K for 500+ sqft 1 bed apartment is insane. That bedroom is a closet! You're not saving on the gym. It's part of your price. Yes, the bedroom in the $600k apartment is bigger, but not by much, and if you want to be able to walk around your bed or stand up to look in your closet, a king size bed wont fit in that space. It's nice, but it's not worth it, and the transit system isn't all that great. I'd be homeless NYC, but I'd never move there. They have in window a/c units and they suck! They don't get an airtight seal in the windows, at least the one in the bedroom didn't which means hot air & bugs getting in in the summer and cold air & bugs getting in in the winter. Also, they should've put the stove out more and not in that tight space. If you have an accident while cooking, you could get seriously burned because you didn't have space to back up. Save much? You won't be eating much. Staten Island is more family friendly. No, you can take the ferry to Manhattan but depending where you live you might have to drive to the terminal. You have to make 500k to afford these apartments and expect to have some semblance of a normal life. New York is not the place to move to.

I wouldn't even be able to afford a studio apartment anywhere in New York. Their housing prices are outrages especially for how small their condos/apartments are. I have more room in my one bedroom apartment in Arizona than any of the one bedrooms in this video and I pay less than $1,500 which includes utilities. I can BARELY afford to pay that as it is so we just go with less food for the month so we can keep a roof over our heads.
