The palmetto is important in South Carolina's history: in the revolutionary war, South Carolina troops were once forced to take shelter from the Brits behind a barrier made from felled palmettos. Lo and behold, the resilient and springy trees did a great job in repelling the incoming cannon fire.

Michigan is often called the “Wolverine State,” its more common nickname is the “Great Lakes State.” This name comes from the fact that Michigan is the only state in the United States that borders four of the five Great Lakes. Also referred to as the “Water Wonderland,” The name Michigan itself comes from the Chippewa word, michi-gama, meaning “large lake.”

Maine's nickname "The Pine Tree State" is because we have trillions of them but we also were used by the British Crown for providing mast pines for ships and later the US Navy and commercial ships from U.S.. There`s a tail going about here in Yorkshire regarding a chap who walked into a Pub called The Donkey. Don`t go - I`ve not finished yet : Upon ordering a pint this chap notices a donkey in the back yard, idly stood having a piss on its knee caps. `Landlord says to his guest, " Aye - as might be expected I`m rather proud of our donkey." The guest retorts, " I`ll wager 50 quid that I can make your donkey laugh. " Landlord says, " Let`s go for it." Chap goes out into the yard and has a few words to say in the donkey`s ear. Upon which the donkey falls over in a heap of giggles. The Landlord was amazed, saying that he`d not had a laugh out of that donkey in years. " How did you manage to do that ?, he askes. The guest replied, " I said I had a bigger dick than he has." ( But wait - because we`re not through yet ) : The guest said, " I bet I can make your Donkey cry as well !" They shook upon deal number 2 - and off the guest goes into the yard again. When he walks back into the pub the donkey is drowning in tears, unconsolable. `Landlord says, " what did you do to my Donkey. Guest says - "I showed him the size of my pr`k !"

For Illinois the nickname Prarie State is fair and in fact in Chicago, vacant lots are called “Prairies”. However most people refer to Illinois as The Land of Lincoln because Abraham Lincoln lived here and built his law and political career while here. My great great grandfather, an Irish famine refugee, read for the bar the same way Lincoln did and became the 2nd professor of Law at Notre Dame. Land of Lincoln is what is on our license plates…

I caught 2 mistakes Wyoming wasn't just the first to allow women to vote. They refused to join the United States because they wouldn't allow women to vote. The compromised and allowed Wyoming to let women keep their voting right. Wyoming has always allowed women to vote. They didn't give them the vote first in the country. There are no wolverines in Michigan. They're native to the Canadian Shield and don't go farther south than Oregon on the west coast on rare occasions. The nickname from Michigan comes from the Teledo war where the Ohio people called Michigan people wolverines because they are gluttonous eaters and Michigan were gluttons for land. Michiganders liked the name because wolverines never back down even from larger animals like grizzly bears.

Hello from Utah, the Beehive State! 🐝 The original name for the territory that became Utah was 'Deseret' which supposedly means 'honeybee' (according to the Book of Mormon) and is a symbol of Industry (which is the state motto). While there is no linguistic evidence in support of the term 'Deseret' meaning 'honeybee' in any known language it *is* true that the bee was a symbol of Upper Egypt which was know as 'Deshret' to the Egyptians (Red Land - as opposed to 'Khemet' - Black Land for Lower Egypt).

Chiming in as a Michigander: the Toledo War explanation for our nickname is the correct one, as -- contrary to what's shown here -- wolverines are NOT native to Michigan. They wander into the Upper Peninsula from Wisconsin from time to time, but there's never been any known resident population of wolverines anywhere in Michigan, and they were never hunted for their fur here. Further backing the Toledo War explanation, some even credit the sentiments from the conflict as developing into one of the biggest college sports rivalries in the country between the University of Michigan -- the Wolverines -- and Ohio State University -- the Buckeyes. We aren't aiming weapons at each other anymore, but the state line is VERY weil-defined with maize and blue "M" flags flying to the north, and red, white, silver and black "Ohio State" flags to the south.

However, the International Peace Garden Border Crossing stations for Canada and the U.S. are located on the roads just north and south (respectively) of the access drives for the garden, requiring all visitors - including those returning to the country from which they arrived - to go through the immigration procedures of their destination country upon leaving the garden.” -Wikipedia

The lone star in the Texas flag does not represent opposition to the United States, far from it. That flag was adopted before readmission to the Union after the Civil War only in the sense that it had been the state's flag ever since we declared independence from Mexico. The flag, with its red and white bars, blue field, nd ingle white star, was adopted by the *republic* of Texas in deliberate imitation of the US flag to show our affinity with America. It had one star because we were one state. The flag was maintained after admission to the Union.

San Francisco was the landing spot for most of the miners looking for gold. It cause the population to instantly rise 10 fold from a bare 2000 people before the gold rush to over 10000 in less than a year. Also every Asian immigrant went through San Francisco’s Angel Island to get into the states. Gold is a major good luck symbol in Asian culture. A major Chinatown sprang up because of this immigration. You also might see the occasional old man who wears the traditional Chinese garments in broad daylight which odd isn’t really as it’s Chinatown. The Chinese originally came for the transcontinental railroad but most stayed as it was better wages and an easier path to becoming a US citizen. Unfortunately the Chinese exclusion act was a big detriment which was repealed after the Second World War. That made getting to the US much safer.

And it was written by James Fenimore Cooper, who lived most of his life in Cooperstown, NY (founded by his Father, William Cooper), which is also the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Kentucky bluegrass, especially when allowed to grow high, is a dark green-blue compared to the apple-green color of meadow grasses. Seeing rolling fields of it with horses would give you the idea. In a world with no TV, people could really discern things that, frankly, is kind of lost on me. Love your videos. Been watching a couple of months. Thanks!

Please. DC IS the government. The only reason is Dems want more electoral votes that'll reliably vote Democrat. It's bad enough that DC workers are allowed to live in neighboring states, the whole point of DC was for the government workers.

As a Native Michigander: The Wolverine state is not about the animal (barely ever seen in Michigan). It comes from Fur trading and an Ohio attempt at a class slur about people from the Territory of Michigan as "nasty wolverines" and Fur trading. The War of 1835 still defines us to this day. Just on the Football field instead. The Univeristy of Michigan Wolverines!

I live in Wisconsin and nobody here uses the Nickname “Badger state” unless you’re talking about college football. The more common state nickname is “America’s Dairyland” or “The dairy State” so idk why the video used the other one.

Yes ma’am, California is considered “the golden state” because in the 1860s or 70s, after our Civil War, gold was discovered in California and a lot of it. During our reconstruction period following the civil war, so many people relocated to California to try and “get their piece of the pie” so to speak. And in doing so, there was a lot of malicious happenings went on. Anyways that is considered “The California gold rush”. And that is how they got their name

The fruit of the buckeye tree looks like a Buck’s Eye, dark brown with a smaller, lighter circle. This nut is not edible by people, but it is eaten by many kinds of wildlife. Some people consider carrying a buckeye in your pocket to bring good luck. Our state flag has a stylized circular representation of a buckeye, and it’s also the shape of the letter O for Ohio. We are also famous for buckeye candies, a ball made of melted peanut butter and powdered sugar, dipped into melted chocolate 3/4 or 4/5 of the way. If you haven’t had it, look up some recipes! Yum! 😋
