One quick clarification: You notice that Shenhe goes back and no one praises her, and the reason for this is because she goes back many years later. The village is long abandoned, only cobwebs remaining, as seen in the animation. To further explain why she felt shunned and why she only went back as an adult, please see my longer explanation below. This is very much a 仙俠-inspired story. For context, the story shown in the opera, while influenced by 李寄斩蛇, is actually a romanticised take on the history of the character Shenhe in the game. Shenhe's father threw her into the cave, expecting and hoping that she would die after being promised by the demon within that Shenhe's death would let Shenhe's mother (who passed away a while back) come back to life. He later regretted it and later hanged himself (which explains why no one was at Shenhe's home anymore). Shenhe did have a blade or dagger and fought the demon for days before an adeptus (Genshin Impact's take on 仙人) saved her. The adeptus then took her to the mountains and raised her in isolation from human culture and society. Shenhe then cultivated in the mountains for years, living off medicinal herbs and mountain dew and learning the ways of the adepti/仙人 as their disciple. This process eventually led to her hair turning white. She made a trip back to her hometown many years later as an adult, but after her father hanged himself, people started to move away from the village, thinking it haunted and cursed. As for Shenhe, raised in the mountains by demigods and lacking the social skills and mannerisms of normal people combined with long white hair, people that met her mistook her for an adeptus and thought they were meeting deities. Shenhe eventually went back to the mountains, finding nothing for her in the human world. Yunjin's father heard bits and scraps of the tale and came up with the Divine Damsel of Devastation, which as an fictional piece of dramatic work, naturally took some creative liberties with the truth.

I think you miss out the red rope part. The adepti said shenhe could have taken down the monster by herself eventually. This is because of her bloodlust and homicidal instinct. So the red rope is to keep the instinct at bay. And also her fate is to bear the curse of calamity. I think this is also another reason why she keep herself apart from the humanity.

@delin Yep this is the official one. Should also note that "adeptus" (plural "adepti") is the game's English translation of 仙 (xiān). Adepti are basically supernatural creatures who live for thousands of years, and include characters like Xiao (peng bird), Ganyu (half-qilin) and Yanfei (half-xiezhi). Shenhe herself was raised since childhood as a disciple of the crane adeptus Cloud Retainer, and was isolated from humankind until the moment you meet her in the story

I started playing Genjin Impact a week ago, and I am hooked, because I am in Japan for study right now but the first time I saw the ad of this game on the subway in 2019, I was attracted as well due to its art style, BGM and cultural elements, and some places in this game the view just stunning, in this game a lot of things like you said are based on real things and it also have a lot of metaphors. The better you know about their cultural background the more enjoyable this game will be, honestly. Even though this game only have 3 major areas currently, like Mond, stand for Mid Europe, Liyue for China, Inazuma for Japan, and they said the winter country is Russia，Maple for France. Now I finished the story line in Liyue and working on Inazuma now, this game just so gorgerous that I am pround of being a Chinese and willing to learn more about our own history. And lastly, when you reach the Liyue, don't miss any corner in this area.

So yes I'd say it's okay for preteens as long as the kid won't get too upset if they miss out on a character they like.

All of them started happy and light-hearted for around two years, and then is an existential drama and depressing stuff that I don't recommend to any children. In Genshin Impact, we are starting to turn to that depressing style since the release of Inazuma. So my answer is... no, it is not a game for children, no matter what the art style might suggest. Maybe we have half a year or a year before it starts to deviate from the light-hearted childish content there is now. Perhaps the others just don't know what to expect from miHoYo, but I in advance say: don't let a child play this game.

Actually it's great because I suggest for who that can play this quest should try as well. Story is great and some surprise hidden in there. Very deep feeling in there. Sweet end for sure. Yunjin is a male, and the story of Shenhe is actually that his father thought she was a kid that brings bad luck, and when there was a monster (the snake looking creature), his father forced Shenhe to fight that monster. Although Shenhe fought and killed the monster for many days in the cave, Shenhe was almost died. Luckily, something saved her . sorry for the bad grammars
