I recommend anyone who is on the fence about MLS watch games during Rivalry week. Every season MLS has a week/10 days dedicated to MLS rivalry games. So a majority of MLS rivalries games are played with in a span of about 10 days. So LAFChokers vs 5 time MLS champs LA Galaxy also LA Galaxy vs San Jose, Seattle vs Portland, NYCFC vs NYRB, Columbus vs Cincinnati, Inter Miami vs Orlando, etc It's honestly the best week in MLS besides playoff time. It starts august 21st this year

The MLS been trying the avoid the Cosmos because they didn't want anything to do with the old NASL.. basically NYCFC is a MLS pet project, also NYFC plays in NY proper, but RB has been in NY area aka NJ since 96

Oh really? These former NASL teams would like a word with you: Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers, Vancouver Whitecaps and San Jose Earthquakes. And the Tampa Bay Rowdies operated all the way in one form or another up until 1993 and the city was awarded the Mutiny in 1994. MLS didn't shy away from NASL, considering Lamar Hunt helped form both leagues. The Cosmos always thought they were too good for MLS. Yet they signed players who were dropped by MLS teams regularly and played in 2nd divisions. Ooooh, so sad, poor Cosmos. Once a bright shining star, now, a tarnished turd.

@@riccorich You mean, NYCFC plays in NYC proper unless the Yankees need the stadium, then you can find them in Connecticut. Since they still don't have their own stadium 5+ seasons later because Garber blows them on the regular since they are his baby. They are a charity case. MLS should make them stadium share with the Red Bulls like they made Chivas share with the Galaxy.

The Red Bulls stadium, Red Bull Arena, is in Harrison, New Jersey. NYCFC plays in Yankee Stadium (NYCFC is co-owned by Manchester City FC owners & New York Yankees owner). Yes, Pele played for the NASL New York Cosmos 1975-1977. Saw Cosmos with Pele play the St. Louis Stars at Busch Stadium in St. Louis in 1977. The Stars won 2-0, and Pele was yellow carded for an American football-style tackle on Stars forward Al Trost. MLS has some good, if not budding, derbys besides Galaxy-LAFC, Portland-Seattle-Vancouver, or the Hudson River Derby. Toronto-Montreal, Dallas-Houston, Colorado-Salt Lake have been contested for several years now. A new one (Ohio Derby) with Columbus vs Cincinnati. With St. Louis City SC joining the league in 2023, there are ready-made derbies with Sporting Kansas City and St. Louis vs Chicago (Cardinals vs Cubs in baseball, Blues vs Black Hawks in hockey...soon to be joined by St. Louis City SC vs Chicago Fire FC in football). I try to never miss the North London Derby on tv, as well as Manchester United vs Liverpool (I'm a long-time Man Utd supporter), Man Utd vs Man City, Aston Villa vs Birmingham City, or Newcastle United-Sunderland.

The only pro sport in Jersey is the Devils (hockey) & every other major sports like the Jets, Giants & Red Bulls have New York names, but play in Jersey 😆 Also, Soccer/Football culture is huge in the states, it just competes with more establish sports!

This is unrelated, but I don’t know if you remember me telling you about having been to Allianz Field a couple times and me hoping to go back there this season. i went back there two weeks ago for Minnesota’s game against Austin FC and saw a 2-0 win for Minnesota! It was a great time, and the atmosphere was incredible, it was the first game with full capacity since COVID. if you ever make a trip to the US and come to Minnesota, I’d highly recommend coming to a Minnesota United game.

I don't care what sport it is, the crowd atmosphere makes the game greater... when you finally get to the US and go to a game, don't forget to tailgate before the game... get there 1-2 hours early and just enjoy the food, the people and the rivalry. I hate to nitpick but Boston is the biggest city we have closest to Europe. However, since the UN is in NYC, which makes it figuratively the capital of the world, there's a larger int'l presence there. So it's like DC where you'd have a lot of expats/soccer fans.

Of the ones you've reviewed, the Seattle vs Portland rivalry is the one real one. It has actual history. LA vs LAFC and NYRB vs NYCFC are invented by the marketing arm of MLS. Hell NYCFC doesn't even have their own damn stadium! They've been playing in the NYRB stadium recently. When NYCFC plays at their official home stadium it's on a comically small field squeezed into the outfield of Yankees Stadium.

True, but let them grow on their own, and let some history grow before hyping them too much. To me the bigger rivalry for NYRB is DC United, they've been battling since the start of MLS, and the bigger rivalry for LA is San Jose, they've been playing each other since the start of MLS as well. Yes geography can influence rivalries, but let's maybe wait until they've played more games against each other before we start calling it a big rivalry.

NYC has to do with NY Red Bull and New York Yankees

It’s interesting how both cross town rivals are a reflection of US sports tradition vs more typical football traditions. In the NY rivalry, NY Red Bull is the original NY football club from the original MLS teams, plays in New Jersey like many other “New York” teams, and has a nickname (granted it’s named after Red Bull, which now Red Bull is going after naming rights in Europe.) NYCFC plays in actual New York, is called NYCFC and is the newer club which the teams are trying to be more European. The only fault of NYCFC is they play in a baseball stadium… LMFAO With that said, same in LA. LA Galaxy, one of the original MLS teams, never played in actual LA, instead they play in the suburbs of either Pasadena and now Carson, has a nickname like many American sports teams, and in their case signs older stars in the down side of their career… very American football club. LAFC on the other hand play in LA, is new like NYCFC, is called LAFC not a nickname, and they are trying to appeal to the local, football crazy, Mexican community.

Read this excerpt from Wikipedia for a better description of just how the owners make a fortune from SUM and have since 2002 - Soccer United Marketing is the for-profit marketing arm of Major League Soccer and the exclusive marketing partner of the United States Soccer Federation, which primarily both deal in the promotion and sanctioning of professional soccer in the United States. As well, in 2016, Soccer United Marketing was chosen as the exclusive worldwide marketing partner of CONCACAF and CONMEBOL. CONMEBOL describes Soccer United Marketing as "the preeminent commercial soccer enterprise in North America, overseeing the marketing, promotion and operational execution of the region’s most successful soccer entities." It goes on to describe Soccer United Marketing as the business that "holds the exclusive commercial rights to Major League Soccer and the United States Soccer Federation, as well as promotional, operational and marketing rights to Mexico national football team games played in the United States." Look at all those rights. They make money hand over fist. They are not as worried as you would think.

The United States Soccer Federation (U.S.S.F) and MLS's contract with SUM has expired and they said they weren't renewing this time, Cause the USSF wants to have it's own independent tv deal same as mls. Because the current mls tv deal is shared with the USSF which expires after next season

But I also agree I love when there was controversy in a game. Also I’ve been to all derby games including the Red Wedding I have that game ticket framed on my wall haha. I'm all for more intense rivalries in MLS, it creates draw and desire, but it just feels... plastic. It's like expecting anybody to have a rivalry with MK Dons, what reason is there to care? As a Seattle fan, it's hard to justify MLS creating these 'rivalries' out of thin air. That's not how rivalries work. The Lakers aren't rivals with the Clippers, they're rivals with the Celtics. The Yankees aren't rivals with the Mets, they're rivals with the Red Sox. Let the rivalries develop naturally. In-city/Closest Neighbor rivalries are the most common, but its not always the case. Seattle and Portland despise each other for over 50 years, yet some fans claim that the 3-5 year old clubs have the best rivalries in american soccer? Absolutely not.

2016 was the year Jesse Marsch took control of RBNY and started making them press like crazy. It was amazing. Also Red Bull have never won the MLS Cup playoffs but they have won the Supporter's Shield a lot and only missed playoffs like 3 years in their history. Glad you reacted to this! Very, very New York answer. And 100% on point. The Cosmos of the 1970s were a truly star studded team. Pelé, Beckenbauer, Chinaglia, Moore, Cruyff, and a few other legends from the 1970 Brazil team... The goalkeeper of that team was Shep Messing, who is featured in this piece. At the time, he was one of the (very) few Americans who could rightfully be considered world class. A couple other decent American players were immigrants Werner Roth, Siegfried Stritzl, and John Kerr. There was a film in the 1980s called "Escape to Victory". It was very popular in Europe because it featured so many great players in roles as allied POWs. Werner Roth played the villain as captain of the Nazi German team. As film, it's mediocre. As either a history buff or a fan of old footballing legends, it's biblical.

Basically here you just have a battle of 2 bazillionaire corporate ownership groups in City Football Group vs Red Bull, lol Personally I find Red Bull slapping their corporate name and logo on all their football clubs really detestable, so I have to say I prefer NYCFC to NY Red Bulls if I had to choose between the two… Although I find it pretty ridiculous that NYCFC still don’t have a stadium of their own and are playing in Yankee Stadium You’d think between the money of Abu Dhabi and the New York Yankees they could finance an actual soccer stadium for NYCFC 😂

I don't think NYCFC's stadium issue has anything to do with money. I'm pretty sure it has a lot more to do with not being able to find a location. They want it in/around NYC as opposed to the Red Bulls who claim to be a "New York" team but have a stadium in New Jersey.

They have not kept their promises when they opened up their stadium, the city and the Bronx do not trust them in any promises they make in opening up a soccer stadium now.

The main focus of City Football Group is Man City, and the main focus of Yankee Global Enterprises is of course the Yankees… NYCFC is treated as an afterthought

Were i live dallas is the closest to me to be my home team, but i find my self being a ATLANTA fan more and more. There style of play and the young talent they always get. Next more derbys will be started. With Charlotte fc and Louisville joining the league. Plus man no relegation. So your team good be shit and finnish just outside the bottom 3 or in the bottom 3 and can come back next yr and win the title
