@@shaun9107 That's interesting that you have said this about changing the filters. I actually came to this video to try get info on if the filters really do need changing as soon as the digital monitors prompts it. I tend to use it for longer anyway but thought it was a bad idea. My filters last about a month and I use for about 7 weeks. But I guess Britta wanna make that extra coin somehow.

Thanks for the "tests". If you want more water faster get the larger Brita, 1.13 gallons. I fill mine up when it gets about 2/3 empty and it's ready the next time I go back to use it. It's very convenient! I use it for iced tea water, for Crystal Light water, etc. and I put that container in the fridge so it's always cold. Better than drinking soft drinks all summer, and cheaper too!

My wife upgraded us to the larger dispenser type that looks like a rectangle and I like it better than the pitcher. We refill the new one less often and its easier to pour water from. Soft drinks don't even quench your thirst like water. I'm not a fan of soft drinks.

Interesting. I came here for confirmation. Been using one of these for a few months now. I can tell just by smelling what comes out of the tap vs. the Brita. Huge difference. Can't believe I was drinking it unfiltered for years.

I grew up drinking unfiltered water in Los Angeles, haha. My dad would buy filtered water but as a kid and teenager I couldn't taste the difference. I decided to try this filter as an experiment because I know Costco has a rigorous process before they allow products in their store so I figured if its at Costco it's gotta be good. I was pleasantly surprised by the results and now I can't go back to tap water and I can taste the difference right away. My son accidentally dropped the pitcher and it broke, so we upgraded to the dispenser and I'm very happy with it.

Our water is supplied from a municipal well. It has an odd taste that I just can't stomach. We had been buying plastic bottle water for drinking, and were considering a reverse osmosis system. Friends and family kept talking about how well the Brita filters work, but I was always skeptical. My wife finally talked me into buying a Brita at Costco. I was surprised at the tremendous improvement in taste of our water, and I will now stop buying bottled water. Our refrigerator also came with a water filter that I never installed, so I will have to try that out too. Happy customer.

This is only a ppm test, which only tests generally the change in conductivity of the water due to ionizing components or possibly metals mixed in the water. It doesn't test for bacterial problems, although it may act as an indicator in some cases due to their waste products etc. Which is probably why big water companies haven't taken down this video yet, although I'm sure the channel master already got some "contact" from them to suggest such things.

Tap water quality varies from town to town due in part to the source and sanitation process. Your water provider should be able to give you reports on your water if you have concerns about your water. I'm sure you can also send your own water to a lab to get it tested.

@ChavezDIY

There are different lid designs and they've gotten better over time. The first Brita pitcher I owned I did have a button that you needed to press down to lift the lid while refilling it. I believe for the one in this video, its a flap in the top center that drops down as the water lands on it and allows the water to enter the container. The flap lifts back up as you fill it to the top and when you stop pouring in water.

So the Costco water is the best? Might as well drink that instead of the Brita since a whole pack of bottles is like $2-$4. Assuming one doesn't care about the whole environmental aspect of it though.
@ChavezDIY
@ChavezDIY 7 жыл бұрын
Haha, that's right, assuming you dont care about the environment the costco bottled water is the cleanest. The city water is already safe to drink, the filters just make it cleaner and cosmetically (odor and color) nicer. Keep in mind that the bottled water is purified and in order to achieve this, you need something like a Reverse Osmosis system and that creates waste water in the process (and it goes out the drain). Its like consuming two bottles of regular water for each purified bottle of water you drink. The Brita doesn't produce waste water.

Does its effectiveness change at all if you run a filtered batch of water through the Brita system again?
@ChavezDIY
@ChavezDIY 6 жыл бұрын
Good question. By filtered batch are you referring to water from another Brita pitcher? Its a relatively simple product, it has a charcoal/carbon filter that absorbs elements from the water as the water passes through it. So yes it should decrease TDS on prefiltered water. By how much? I don't know. I wouldn't waste my time and money doing it though. Zerowater makes a pitcher filter that brings down TDS levels to purified water levels, but the filters wont last long as some people report 15 days of use before the filter starts making the water "acidic" in taste. Reverse Osmosis system can filter water like bottled water but its more expensive and creates waste water in the process. Its one of those "you get what you pay for" kinda thing. Our bodies need some elements from the water so there are concerns with drinking only purified water. You already pay for safe drinking water through your city taxes. I am happy with the Brita filter removing some and not all elements from the water.
@WhitleyAKW
@WhitleyAKW 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the information, sir! Yes, I meant running one pitcher's worth of water through the filter (or another filter) again so that water is filtered twice. I agree with you that I wouldn't spend time or effort to try it; I was only just mildly curious if the system acts like a screen where particles of a certain size physically cannot pass through or if it was more like a Swiffer duster which just sort of holds on to whatever it catches regardless of size... I don't know if that makes any sense, but I'm certain it does not make much of a difference for a $5 filter either way From my own experience, I greatly prefer purified bottled water but regularly feel bad about paying for water and wasting plastic, and now I know it wastes water, too! I can tolerate my tap/fridge-filtered water if necessary (first-world problems, right?) but when I've tried the Brita filters in the past, it has made the taste much more tolerable and even enjoyable compared to some bottled waters, which is all that really concerns me. I'm very blessed to live in a place where practically all the water I regularly come into contact with is very safe to drink. My worries about water can be purely cosmetic- the rest is up to God! Thank you for taking the time to perform this experiment, answer questions, and share information about different filtration processes, Mr. Chavez.

@ChavezDIY
@ChavezDIY 4 жыл бұрын
The reading won't go lower than what I listed in the video. If you want a lower reading you can try the Zerowater pitcher filter. Their pitcher brings the water down to about 0 TDS, but there are downsides that go along with it such as it takes longer to filter and people complain about the water turning acidic after a couple of weeks. So while the ZeroWater pitcher may filter more, the filters will not last as long.

@ChavezDIY
@ChavezDIY 2 жыл бұрын
This method of filtering is the simple charcoal filter type where no water is wasted. Bottled water companies use a more complex system called Reverse Osmosis which creates waste water in the process. So with filtered bottled water, yeah you're stripping all the minerals in the water which some are beneficial to our body, and at the same time you're throwing out some water in the form of waste. Keep in mind that in the US, we the taxpayers already pay to treat our water to a degree considered safe by the EPA. So these filters mainly address what are considered "cosmetic" things like color, odor, taste. Why would someone buy a Brita filter? because they filter the water enough to notice a difference in the taste of the water. Bottled water is cleaner, but its also more expensive, creates waste water, and its removes minerals that are healthy to the body.

@@ChavezDIY I just received two different water filters and three different text kits to test my own water for 22 of the most commonly tested contaminants. Lead, copper, iron and cadmium were all at the most extreme amounts the test strip is capable of registering. I ran my water through the two filters then retested it after the double filtering process and my test strips indicate all 22 parameters are either zero or within safe levels (to the extent the test has the ability to detect). I also went from 922 ppm total dissolved solids to 2 ppm. My water went from smelling and tasting like something out of a sewer or swamp to tasting as good as bottles water. I estimate I will now save 75% or more over the cost of bottled water and eliminate over 2000 bottles going into landfills. I recently learned that 80%+ of what I put into my recycling bin still ends up in landfills and for some odd reason, our county requires by law plastic bottles all go into the recycling bin but when they get to the recycling center they get crushed, go into a dumpster which is transported to a landfill.

Glad it helped. Other pitcher filter brands should be comparative in filtering water. You can only do so much with one small carbon filter. The cheaper brands may cut corners and have poor quality control. Zero Water seemed to have a promising pitcher but the reviews show the filters can last a couple of weeks before water becomes acidic and thus hard to drink. My wife buys bottled water and I drink from my Brita pitcher. If you want bottled water filtration, look into a reverse osmosis system, it will cost a couple hundred and does a great job, but I wont invest in it because it creates waste water in the process.

Here's something on that from the Brita website, "Note, Brita® filters keep a healthy level of fluoride, a water additive that promotes strong teeth". In other words it does not remove fluoride. You have to use a reverse osmosis or stick to filtered bottled water if you want to eliminate fluoride from your drinking water.

It is slow to filter through, but, after it's filtered through, and you use a serving, you fill up the reservoir, put it in the fridge and the next time you want to use it, it's ready. I read many of the reviews on amazon regarding the Zero water filter and its a mixed bag. Sure the TDS levels are much less compared to Brita. But aside from being slower to filter the water, the zero filters will last about two weeks before the water becomes more acidic giving it a undesirable taste. You can track the acidity of the water with a pH meter. If I wanted to test the Zero pitcher, I would definitely use both the TDS meter and pH meter. I don't have much interest in testing it though, haha.

So basically water bottles are the best to drink
@ChavezDIY
@ChavezDIY 3 жыл бұрын
It depends. Water bottles and the water dispensary stores have the most purified forms of water. But there are natural elements in tap water that are helpful to our bodies like calcium, iron, potassium, etc. So doctors don't recommend drinking only pure filtered water because those elements are removed. The water coming from the city is filtered to remove toxins and considered safe for consumption. but it's not purified because the cost to purify is higher and not environmentally friendly. So these water filters are addressing cosmetic aspects of the water (taste, color, odor). Your water company should publish a water report every year so you can see what's in the tap water. These water filters are good enough for me but my girl only drinks bottled water.

The TDS does not mean anything, it measures the Total dissolved solids. Most of them. are good for you, calcium, magnesium ect. What is it removing anyway, is it adding the glues and chemicals used to make the filter?. Is it subtracting the good stuff with the bad, who knows what its doing that thing wont tell you.
@ChavezDIY
@ChavezDIY 7 жыл бұрын
TDS means something, it means total dissolved solids. Its like the concentration of elements in the water. I agree with you, I don't have the tools to detect exactly what it is removing. But a filter in essence removes something, so I wanted to check if it in fact is filtering something rather than nothing. I think adding glues and chemicals would increase TDS levels and would be counterproductive to filtering. There was a showerhead filter I tested that actually increased TDS levels (sounds like the scenario you described), so Its not a filter, but more like an additive. Do you use any filters at home? RO?

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, we are still using the Brita filters, but we are using the dispenser because my son broke the pitcher by accident. It was too heavy and he tried getting water and dropped it. Haven't heard of Pur, but I have heard of ZeroWater as an alternative. While some of the other filters do actually remove more than the Brita filters, the lifespan of their filters is reduced therefore you have to buy more filters. With ZeroWater, people on amazon have said that the water tastes bad when the filter needs to be replaced. Some have suggested that the acidity level increases when the Zerowater filter needs to be replaced. The next time I compare two water filters I plan to use a PH meter in addition to the TDS meter.

Good question. The water will remain the same or increase in PPM levels due to the loss of water mass from evaporation and elements/minerals not rising with evaporation. If you capture the steam and drink that, that's like distilled water and that will have much lower ppm levels.

I've looked into Zerowater and decided not to try due to reviews reporting acidic taste in the water after a couple of weeks. So the filters don't last much, take longer to filter the water, but certainly remove more minerals from the water. Its the bad taste that people complain the most about Zerowater. Minerals aren't necessarily a bad thing, people buy supplements of these very same minerals that we are trying to remove from our water. I understand if you have lead, that's a serious concern, but you might wanna get a lawyer to sue the city if that's the case. So most of these filters address cosmetic issues with water. If you want something close to bottled water, you can buy a reverse osmosis system, but I looked into and didn't like that it produces wastewater in the process. I'm happy with the Brita filters. I stopped buying the refrigerator filters.

It looks like quality control is a huge downfall of zerowater. The negative reviews point to filters lasting about 15 days before the water started to taste acidic, even though the TDS levels were still very low. So the filters continue to filter but its changing the taste of the water to an undesirable taste. So the cons are: takes longer to filter the water, filters don't last long, filter gives the water a bad taste after a couple of weeks. Very impressive at removing elements from water, but youll have to change it often and deal with acidic water taste.

Probably more a reduction. Your water company should provide you with results of their water testing every year so you can see how much chlorine is in your tap water. The Brita will reduce the amounts of elements in your water, but I doubt it will completely remove every trace of chlorine. If you want chlorine removed, you'll need to invest in a reverse osmosis filter system or stick to bottled water.

29% with no waste water is good in my opinion and it does make the water taste better compared to tap water. Keep in mind that everyone here in the US already pays taxes to filter harmful elements from the municipal water systems. That is why all these filters are primarily addressing "cosmetic" issues with the water. I've considered a RO system but when I found out how much waste water is produced by the RO system, no way I was going to buy it. A reverse osmosis system wastes about 4 gallons of water per gallon made. So its not just the cost of the filter, but you're also consuming 4x more water for every 1 gallon of RO water you consume. When I considered all this waste water for "cosmetic" issues, I decided this was not the system for me. I am happy with the Brita filters.
