As war rages in Ukraine, the idea of nuclear attack rears its ugly head once again.
Today, Britain relies on collaboration with her allies together with her own nuclear deterrent to protect against attack.
But how did it all begin?
In a special report, we hear from three men who took part in Britain's early Cold War-era of nuclear testing - the men who helped test Britain's very first nuclear capability.

One of the three veterans, John Robinson, is my Grandfather. I have the fortuitous pleasure of him still being with us, and this video has made me increasingly more proud of his achievements. It cements his legacy in the history books.

It's really nice to see veterans who were there on video, as well as a watchable documentary account of those already passed on. Being remembered isn't much but it's a lot more than being forgotten or denied.

My father who was in the RAAMC was at the last tests (Tim & Vixen), it's legacy that still lasts in his children & grandchildren due to his exposure to plutonium &, polonium and other radioactive material. But nothing is really said about the minor trials. He died at the age of 62 due to multiple cancers which have been passed on down as well as Parkinson's & Leukaemia.

Thank you for getting the word out for these veterans. My Dad served in Maralinga & Christmas Isl Grapple and sadly passed away this week 😢 I believe the medal is a commemorative medal and not a service medal 😢

Christmas Island now known as Kiribati in the Pacific was our home for twelve months, our squadron was part of the Operation Grapple the testing of a Hydrogen Bomb in the 1950's. Believe me you got more than a suntan.

By definition, you cannot subsequently measure the value of a deterrent. Despite the sneering undertone of this video.

I’ve seen something exactly similar to this video. The English soldiers get together every so often and they have a great dinner and discuss what they went through. It’s very sad to see what happened to them. I can’t believe England actually did that to their own troops!!! SMH the poor troops had to sit on boats and look away from the flash of the bombs because the radiation would have made them blind… they were never compensated for what they did either… so damn sad

The British Ministry of Defence has never cared about its soldiers. Britain's treatment of its Afghanistan veterans shows that.

Britain went from a world power to basically as the USA'S SIDEKICK😂. Funny seeing movies like Lifeforce where the Brits have a space ship with only one American astronaut😂
