Anyone who lived in the Ottoman empire who wasn't Muslim was made to pay a tax or face being wiped out. Jizyah (as the tax on non-Muslims is called) was charged to all non-Muslims who where treated as second class citizens and were essentially slaves by way of the tax. When the last Ottoman sultan tried to reform the system and make it more equal the system began to fall apart. Britain was one of many countries that filled in the power vacuum as the empire fell. At one point the British conquered Palestine for the sole purpose of handing it back to the Ottomans. As the Ottoman empire continued to decline the British found themselves in control of Palestine once again. The British eventually realised that that their presence in the region was making a bad problem worse and so they handed control over to the UN. The region has been invaded by something like over 14 empires throughout history. The problems in the region have been caused by the involvement of many empires not just one.
