I got my J12 running without removing the injector pump! It was a tiny issue with the throttle linkage on top of the pump, almost invisible to the naked eye.

I wrote a comment above which I will copy here for you. The bit where you got frustrated because you didn't have the replacement parts made me think of the African mechanics. They may have to wait two or three weeks or longer to get parts in. The owner doesn't want to wait, so they do a quick bush repair and tell them to come back in three weeks. The bush repair seems fine, so the owner doesn't see the point in spending any more money and never goes back. Years later they end up in your shop. I have met some great bush mechanics in Africa, they do jobs with such few tools. I take my hat off to them.

I bet theres a huge variation in different African countries. South Africa I would rank as being as good as UK/Europe. Probably a lot less good in some of the poorer countries. I saw some shocking work being driven around in Morocco, and they are seen as being 'almost European' and quite a (relatively) wealthy African country..

These were a bugger as the lower shock nut was inside the spacer so almost impossible to get access too or get off As the spring on the other side had to be changed I just cut the coils off!

Another interesting video Mike. You couldn't make it up! People think because it is a Land Rover it doesn't need regular servicing. Simply fresh lubrication in all the right places saves a whole lot of money down the line. (Any oil in the engine would be a good idea!) The owner will notice the difference even after a quick patch up. I know Canada is a different marker but I thought you might like to know. I can't imagine there are too many Defender experts in Canada. Hope this helps in your pricing.

This owner/ operator uses the same maintenance schedule as my father , drive it till it quites repair and repeat. This is the most expensive system to use and most of the people who use this system have no money, I wounded why? There was a advertisement in America some years ago it said pay me now or pay me later I always believed it should have been pay me now or pay me five times as much later !

Cutting a spring shorter makes it stiffer increases the number pounds of force required to compress the spring. The spacer is put in to retain the original ride height. Because the spring is stiffer it also is harsher and that increasing harshness is what beat the top out of the Tower. There is a reason that car companies hire Engineers to work out the suspension systems.

quick question? Ive not been involved in Land Rovers for many years, but shortly after discovering this channel my Dad asked me to sell his discovery 300tdi, so I've stuck it on ebay today for £850 spares or repair, it needs the inner wings doing, part of drivers footwell and another bit in the floor near rear door, otherwise mechanically its great, I was just wondering what a 300tdi engine would fetch on its own. This ones done 158k but it starts instantly and has no smoke? It would have been great 20 years ago when I had my series 1. Also I couldnt believe how much lighter the clutch was in it than a TD5 variant I recently drove, is this normal?

@@BritannicaRestorations Good on ya. With these imports, it certainly seems like (sorry to say it) the owners are taking the p*ss a bit. They're buying vehicles that they know are knackered but they're just thinking "Mike'll sort it out". You're tidying the thing up and then they're left with a vehicle that has a substantially higher value than it had before you sorted it out. Then they can flog it and buy another one. Rinse & repeat. When you're spending all your time doing multiple jobs on the SAME vehicle you're losing the ability to progress other jobs at the same time so it's reasonable that ALL the time you spend working on a single vehicle is invoiced. Let's face it, it's getting to the point where what you're actually doing with these vehicles is more of a "restoration" than simple repairs or servicing. Is there any legal reason why you have to adhere to a single hourly rate? Maybe you could have a policy where, say, smaller jobs are charged at a lower rate while anything more complex is charged at a higher rate? If somebody rocks up wanting a new wheel-bearing fitted or a leaky hose replaced you charge the lower rate but these "have a look at it, make me a list and then fix as much of it as you can" jobs get charged at the higher rate. You can always apply a bit of discretion to decide when it's appropriate to start charging the higher rate - probably whenever you realise that what you're working on is going to be a can of worms. Alternatively, maybe you could charge some kind of "Inspection & Diagnosis" fee for EACH aspect of the work you do on these Ebola Rovers? If you need to spend a day figuring out the wiring on a vehicle before you can even start repairing it, invoice the owner for a whole day of "Electrical system inspection & diagnosis" before you even pick up your wire cutters. Same thing with "Engine inspection & diagnosis" or "Bodywork inspection and diagnosis". It's fine to be a bit lenient on customers who want routine jobs doing but you want to find a way to deter (or get a more reasonable amount of cash from) the customers who're using you to turn a $15,000 turd into a $50,000 diamond.

A short travel spring (why?🙄) with full length damper on that spacer is what smashed the turret. Whoever did that spring cutting is an idiot. But in a way, it was lucky that those bodges cause a workshop visit, or those wheel bearings might have seized and caused far worse problems, especially if it happened at speed.

G'Day Mike. Matey you might want to order in quite a few parts if you can, I put 2 orders in this week myself and I've started to get the following message back from the supplier: "Part is now obsolete, will no longer be made/supplied by Land Rover". This has been for 2001 - 2016 model Defenders so far, apparently Land Rover have stopped making parts entirely for the defender and as parts run out at the warehouse, that's it, no more. All after-market/OEM items that can be had should still be fine but genuine Land Rover....yeah - no more.

They started this trick when Ford was in charge - 7 years of spares and then obsolete for slow moving parts I recall in the 70's our local BL /Land Rover dealer had quite a few spares on the shelf and even parts for series 1 - if not in stock they would have them in a few days from the factory

Why do people buy these polished turd Rovers, slap some paint and undercoat on it and presto you have a "rebuilt" truck. A personal favorite of mine was a very expensive (fresh paint and undercoat job) 110 that had no air filter (nice new snorkel right to the turbo no filter housing on the way) and a bent connecting rod in the 200tdi (with 300 turbo and manifolds).
