I can never get those bloody rocker gaskets to be oil tight. I even bought a small torque wrench for the job. Enjoying these videos mike!

I don’t know about anyone else but I am really enjoying this series of videos. You were thinking of what to do and cover well in my opinion this sort of thing I think you’ve nailed it. I have a Defender 300tdi which has sat on the drive for 7 years so a vid on basics to check before a ‘will it start’ type thing would be useful. What conditions would cause a run away.? Thanks for all the informative vids to make your Landrover better.

If it has run away uncontrollably then engine oil is getting in to the intake manifold

When I stripped down a 300tdi to put in my RRC (VM out TDI in ) I put all the spring caps in a bag just like you said, When it came to put them back I had one left over !! I checked three times and still had one left so unless someone left one in before, One of yours made a long trip to France. PS I am finding out there are a lot of small differences between a 91 RRC and a 97 disco d1 engine bay but I am making it better.

I found the 2 missing ones - one was stuck to the head and came out in the parts washer

Agree 100% with keeping the pushrods in order. The balls, rockers and lifters have all bedded together and need to go back the same. I did a head once for a girl stranded in Bristol. She had a new head gasket fitted to her Astra by a Garage up North and when she drove to Bristol to visit her mates she said it was getting hot.. "I'll have a look" said I. There was water coming out of everywhere and it was in the oil. I soon discovered the head bolts had been tightened to around 40lb/ft!! The garage forgot to follow up with the 60 degrees then a further 60 degrees, (from memory).

When ever you start investigating a problem and you discover someone has been there before you alarm bells ring the deeper you go. Like I said to the owner on the last video, don't let anyone touch your Defender except Mike. I said that without knowing what we would find. The only information we had was the head gasket had been done a year or two before. That was the first alarm bell. Nothing in the video was a surprise, we could have almost predicted it.

The split intake gasket is very common - obviously not changed - I also found out the head was not skimmed on the last job - just a new gasket fitted - so I bet they didn't change the bolts either

@@BritannicaRestorations It was hard for us to gauge how loose the head bolts were as we aren't used to your air gun. However they did spin out really easily and we can trust that you know your own gun. Bits missing always ring alarm bells also. On a positive note, the factory expansion tanks are well made. That one looks like Bernard Manning's belly!

Normally on a good head, my gun will not take the studs out - I have to use a breaker bar to crack them first I found the caps = they were inside the head - lucky they didn't drop into the tappets!

Just a pointer I have recently fitted new genuine valve caps, they are uk made again having been on back order for a while. The genuine ones are noticeably thicker and deeper than the other two aftermarket makes beginning with B.
@BritannicaRestorations

The metal quality of Rover parts is getting worse - it is recommended to use genuine old caps rather than new genuine Same goes for the gearbox syncro slippers - new genuine ones are too soft

Fair play I had a mix of Indian made genuine which turned to polos, packet this time is back to uk made so fingers crossed.

two tips for ya , obviously , you now know about the valve stem caps , so i wont mention them . but , a bungee across the rockers from one end to the other sorts that out , the other , as your pulling push rods out , dont lift them up , try pulling on them them to the side till they go click , think of a railway points or dozer steering lever action . it will break the suction between the cam follower bucket and the bottom of the push rod . some engines its possible to lift the bucket and thet can twist and jam ,and cause you problems ive seen them go back in , tappets adjusted , start up , and either break the bucket or jump a pushrod as they fall back in to place ,,, but that click before you lift the push rod out avoids that ,, hth.

mike thank you for taking the time to record and post all your work. Being a big LR fan myself they honestly are a pleasure to watch. Just one small complaint mind. In a world of 24/7/365 days a year, back to back on demand tv and box sets, waiting for the follow ups on the 300tdi head gasket had me on tender hooks. Best you work longer hours, say 20 hour days to keep us your LR disciples from sleepless nights awaiting part 2/3. Just a thought, kind regards from n.wales. once again many thanks for sharing all your knowledge.

I had a 300 that would loose lash caps regularly. But same engine would also break rocker shafts often. Turns out the the head had been skimmed so hard a valve would catch a piston it always sounded rough. Never had issues with a 300 since I changed that lump.

Just a thought but why did you take the head apart before removing it I think that I would have removed the head and striped it down on the bench then clean it up and put it back together ready to go back on in one piece or am I missing something.

Tdi, not a carb fed petrol, so the fuel is injected correctly but the compressed intake air leaks out. But yes, it would run lean if you had this on a 2.25 or 2.5 petrol.
