I had the same pipe cut by the air conditioning pump. If it wasn't for the Madman EMS giving me a early warning on the drop in water level, I would have lost the engine. Great video. Have an awesome day Mike.

hello mike, yes you do get gremlin problems with l/ rovers. had them in the 70s with series 3 vehicles. easily sorted.
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
Indeed - that is why you have to run a few miles on them first before handing over

Don't put thread tape on the sender. It earths through the threads. The gauge will not read correctly if you use thread tape.
@UKSCIENCEORG4 жыл бұрын
Exactly the same with my V8 Rover SD1. I had to ground the sender with a short length of wire after sealing the threads with PTFE tape!

Shows the importance of weekly fluid and oil level checks. Wouldn't take long for that head to get overheated again.

Mike those thermostat housings were troublesome on the assembly line at Land Rover, Solihull. I’m not sure who the supplier was but those castings suffered very high incidences of porosity. If it helps the temperature switch was fitted with a copper washer and Loctite 577 was used as a thread sealer.👍🏻
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
It's funny I have never seen one with a washer - does not look like there is enough shoulder - but it does seem like an M10 parallel fine thread 'similar' pitch to 1/8 BSP
@666DW4 жыл бұрын
Britannica Restorations Ltd Mike it appears from what you are saying that all the 200/300 TDi engines you have worked on have been worked on previously given there were no washers fitted to the temp switch. The temperature switch definitely had a washer fitted. Although it was also aluminium not copper as I previously stated.

Talking about water leaks l end up melting a new timing belt because l forgot to put in water while working on the turbo,think l might of been lucky,l did a compression test and all good except down a little on 2 cylinder and did a compression test on radiator all good. Its a 2.8lt DLT daihatsu rocky,hopefully the engine seals are all ok.great 4x4 l own the last model they made,great little 4x4 along side of my 4bd1 county.

Hi Mike, could worn out piston rings cause starting issues on my Defender? Checked the starter motor, mechanic says no issues but he says I need new pistons and rings. 114k km, in dusty west Africa. Thanks.
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
A compression test or leak-down test would show bad compression

I have never heard a 300tdi sound as good as this one, i salute you. Just got a 2000 defender 300Tdi (not really sure it is that exact year) and i have to rebuild it. How do i exactly establish its actual year??
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
There is no year code on the engine as far as I know - but on the genuine heads there is a date stamp under number 3 injector
