I’m in the process of restoring a 1981 Series III 109 pickup with the IOE 6-cylinder engine. Love that you all are recording your work on this classic. This will help me tremendously!

Quite a rare find, but I am beginning to doubt the 27,000 miles on the speedo! ( probably when the speedo cable snapped)
@machiningbasics17295 жыл бұрын
Britannica Restorations Ltd lol sounds like mine it’s showing 99000 and I rekon that’s 2nd time or even 3rd time round as it was used by the police for years and years. Great work will watch part 3 tonight !!

My guess with the gearbox is the rear layshaft bearing kaput . the roller one . box out ,floor seat box etc . the gearbox is an easy strip and repair as they are a blacksmith built box and it can be done without parting the transfer / front wheel drive housings from the main gearbox. will be interesting to see what you find Mike , don't forget to take a good look at the clutch or replace while the g/box is out.

I know the six cylinder doesn’t have the greatest reputation in a series Land Rover, but when maintained properly it is lovely smooth engine. Had one for about ten years now and hasn’t missed a beat. Keep an eye on exhaust valve clearances!

And it is wise to run them on a additive in the fuel and these engines were designed to run on leaded prtrol

@@BritannicaRestorations HI, I've run a series 2A with this engine recently 65k miles as an overland vehicle. It's never had anything but unleaded (no additives used) some as bad as 75RON in Kazakhstan. Didn’t miss a beat. I did give the engine a birthday in Australia before I set off and I can tell you the valve seat material is extremely hard. The valves are the fuse point. In my opinion the best thing to ensure reliability is electronic ignition and careful mixture adjustment airing on the rich side. If you experience pre igntion is most likely due to Chinese replacment ignition parts.The engine is a great match to the rest of the cars technology.

Always impressed by how smooth an inline six is. I have two - 1984 F150 with the 300 cui in and 2008 Land Cruiser with the tiny 4.2L (NA). All torque and no action

This will be a good watch... I remember when I did my apprenticeship, we had loads of the old LWB Land Rovers which had had their 6 cylinders pulled out and replaced with the 2 1/4 petrols, my old boss always said they suffered with valve problems and weren’t very good on the MPGs.. I always loved the sound of them and thought they drove rather well, the very last old Land Rover I broke for that company was the same as this, a safari 6 cylinder.. I wished I’d kept that now.. Tell your friend the European Union will be a thing of the past soon Mike... the French are still rioting whilst Macron turns a blind eye and poor old Jean Claude Juncker is still struggling to find a pair of shoes to match whilst stumbling about as piss as a parrot! And as somebody who has many years of History within our company (1497) it’s a massive relief to see this happening as our jobs were directly under threat! Hope you had a good Christmas Mike...

The need a fuel additive as we have no leaded petrol here - same as my S1

I'd started to fill in an entry form for the Oberon Steam Fest, in April, for you, but I've since torn it up. Running as well as any car that I owned in the seventies!!!!

I think the engine is fine, but the gearbox is going to need quite a few parts!
@bigm3835 жыл бұрын
@@BritannicaRestorations I gathered that from your gearbox removal video. You've acheived a hell of a lot over the weekend. You must run out of places to store bits and pieces over winter. I was joking about the steamfest, but I've been once and it's quite fascinating, and only about 45C in April!!

Lol! That was in a day! Would have been quicker if all the bolts were STD and the floor screws were original type instead of spending hours looking of a spanner or socket to fit! Warming up here today = -1c!

Always disappointing to find gear teeth and other such debris in the oil! Reminds me of a series 3 88” I had many years ago. Lost reverse when stuck in a big hole, alone, in the middle of the night! Fun times! Nearly put a 6 pot in that truck as it happens....

What a beauty! That's a Santana engine? I understand that LR in England never built a six-in-line petrol motor (?), but does not have the Santana badge in the front... Cheers!

Land Rover UK did build 6 cylinder Series. Overhead inlet, side exhaust valve - they tend to run hot at the rear of the cylinder head and crack the casting
