I usually respect Hyacinth's lofty aspirations. It's better than having no ambitions. But this compilation is sad. And makes her look horrible. My biggest fear is getting old because I am sick, unemployed and have no dependents. A nursing home might be a mercy but I can't afford one. I feel sorry for her father. She has such a nice big house but can't spare one room for him.

The problem is that in many cases elderly people can become very demanding and troublesome. For instance, my mother decided she would go to hospital when my son and I went away for a weekend and she told my helper as much. When my helper asked her why, her answer was just that she knows. True to form I received a phone call the first night we were away telling me that she had fallen and needed to go to hospital. It wasn't a case of us having left her on her own as my one daughter (then in her 20's and attending varsity) was with her. My son (now 19) has problems with his mother (who is only 63). She can't walk and doesn't wash herself and is incontinent. But she expects him to be there and care for her, rather than paying for a caregiver than she can easily afford.
