I’ve been watching this show since it came on PBS back in the 90s. I put it on to watch with my boyfriend. He instantly wanted me to turn it off. I kept it on and gradually he started to crack up. Greatest show. Brits really beat Americans when it comes to humor!
@theblissfullone4 жыл бұрын
Good for you, for keeping it on. It's not the type of humour most people are used to. It is delightful though, once you start watching it. I started watching it at the same time as you, 90's PBS. So glad it was available for us to see.
@SavingHistory4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t agree that they beat Americans in humor - it’s just such a different type of humor. There’s something very self-deprecating and quick witted about the humor of British Sitcoms, which I live for, and often miss in American sitcoms....but we do have our moments too. I always thought Frazier was really well done, if not a tad bit British in style, and Big Bang Theory is hysterical in a completely different way. Though I will admit, I watch way more BBC sitcoms than American: “Coupling,” “Mrs. Brown’s Boys,” “Are you being Served,” “Faulty Towers,” etc.....
@mariecait4 жыл бұрын
David Orcutt American sitcoms are pretty repetitive and follow the same formula. I noticed British might take more risks. I enjoy both but definitely think British are more skilled in comedy than Americans.
@SavingHistory4 жыл бұрын
left onread I completely agree - which is why those American sitcoms that break from that repetitiveness are usually the ones to do the best. But not all people understand, or even like British humor. My mother loved it...which is where I got my love for it it. My father, on the other hand, hated it. Sometimes he would just stare at my mother as if saying: “what are you laughing at... they didn’t even tell a joke yet!” LoL. And the funny thing is, my father’s sense of humor was very dry and almost British in style - but he just couldn’t appreciate it when he saw it on screen.
@JasmineSurrealVideos4 жыл бұрын
The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Golden Girls, The Joey Bishop Show (first season), Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Frasier, and Buster Keaton and Jerry Lewis are the most inventive, surreal and psychological comedians I've ever seen. I'm firmly in the American comedy camp, British humour can be a bit unsophisticated and pantomime, with repetitive catch phrases, whereas American tends to be more surreal, psychological, inventive and sharp. I quite like Keeping Up Appearances but no way as much as American humour. I'd recommend a series shown I think in the 90s called Root into Europe, that is very clever, dry and satirical, and Waiting for God, they are two British comedies that are sharp and well written.
